CM Stalin on 5-day visit to Ooty, to open flower show on May 15
COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin arrived in the Nilgiris district on Monday for a five-day official visit. His trip includes inaugurating the internationally acclaimed Ooty Flower Show and participating in several government programmes. As part of the annual summer festival, jointly organised by the Horticulture Department and the district administration, a series of exhibitions have been taking place across the Nilgiris. The festivities began on May 3 with a vegetable exhibition at Nehru Park in Kotagiri, followed by a fragrance exhibition in Gudalur and a rose show at Ooty Rose Garden, which concluded on Monday. The 127th Flower Show at the Ooty Government Botanical Garden — the highlight of the summer festival — will be inaugurated by the CM on May 15. The show will run for 11 days, ending on May 25. CM Stalin flew from Chennai to Coimbatore on Monday morning, where he received a rousing welcome from DMK party members with traditional music and beating of drums. From there, he travelled by road via Mettupalayam and Kotagiri to Ooty, receiving warm receptions at multiple points along the route from party cadres and the public. He is currently staying at the Tamil Nadu Guest House in Ooty. During his stay, the chief minister is also expected to distribute land pattas to eligible beneficiaries and interact with tribal communities in the region. Security has been tightened across the district, with over 1,000 police personnel deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of events and the CM's safety throughout his visit.

Summer festival season kicks off with inauguration of vegetable show in Kotagiri
The summer festival season in the Nilgiris officially kicked off on Saturday with the inauguration of the 13th Vegetable Show at Nehru Park in Kotagiri. The show, which will continue till Sunday, will be followed by Spices Show from May 9th to 11th in Gudalur, the Rose Show at the Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam from May 10th to 12th, the 127th Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden from May 16 to 21, the 65th Fruit Show in Coonoor Sims Park from May 23rd to 25th and the first ever Plantation Crops Show at Kattery Park near Coonoor from May 30th to June 1. Speaking to reporters at the event, the Nilgiris district Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, said the main attractions at the vegetable show this year were the massive exhibits made entirely out of vegetables, which included an exhibit on jallikattu created using 2.5 tonnes of brinjals, potatoes, radishes and carrots. Vegetables were also used to create exhibits themed around Silambam, Thanjavur dolls, and species of fauna, among others. Horticulture departments from Coimbatore, Kanchipuram, Viluppuram, Erode, Theni, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruppur also had stalls featuring exhibits made out of vegetables. The Collector also appealed to the public to apply for e-passes before visiting the Nilgiris and to also avoid using banned plastic products. Also present at the event was Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police Joint Director of Horticulture, Nilgiris district, Shibila Mary and other top officials from the district administration. Thousands of tourists are expected to visit the Nehru Park over the weekend.
