Summer festival season kicks off with inauguration of vegetable show in Kotagiri
The summer festival season in the Nilgiris officially kicked off on Saturday with the inauguration of the 13th Vegetable Show at Nehru Park in Kotagiri.
The show, which will continue till Sunday, will be followed by Spices Show from May 9th to 11th in Gudalur, the Rose Show at the Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam from May 10th to 12th, the 127th Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden from May 16 to 21, the 65th Fruit Show in Coonoor Sims Park from May 23rd to 25th and the first ever Plantation Crops Show at Kattery Park near Coonoor from May 30th to June 1.
Speaking to reporters at the event, the Nilgiris district Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, said the main attractions at the vegetable show this year were the massive exhibits made entirely out of vegetables, which included an exhibit on jallikattu created using 2.5 tonnes of brinjals, potatoes, radishes and carrots.
Vegetables were also used to create exhibits themed around Silambam, Thanjavur dolls, and species of fauna, among others. Horticulture departments from Coimbatore, Kanchipuram, Viluppuram, Erode, Theni, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruppur also had stalls featuring exhibits made out of vegetables.
The Collector also appealed to the public to apply for e-passes before visiting the Nilgiris and to also avoid using banned plastic products.
Also present at the event was Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police N.S.Nisha, Joint Director of Horticulture, Nilgiris district, Shibila Mary and other top officials from the district administration.
Thousands of tourists are expected to visit the Nehru Park over the weekend.

First Plantation Show inaugurated in the Nilgiris
The first-ever Plantation Show was inaugurated as part of the final event of the annual summer festival in the Nilgiris at Kattery Park near Coonoor on Friday. Despite the inclement weather, the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops set up exhibits showcasing traditional lifestyles of farming communities from across Tamil Nadu, with thousands of tourists also visiting the park on their way to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. The Horticulture Department said the plantation show was organised to showcase the tea and coffee industries in the Nilgiris and also to highlight the scope for growing plantation crops such as cashews, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm, and areca nut to farmers. Plantation crops were used in exhibits that portrayed the lifestyle of villagers engaged in farming and agriculture. Cultural events were also organised as part of the plantation show, with the department announcing that awards and prizes will be distributed to farmers growing plantation crops under four different categories at the completion of the show on Sunday (June 1, 2025). This year, the plantation show will signal the end of the summer festival season in the Nilgiris. Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and District Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha were present at the inaugural event. Tourist spots reopen Following the easing of rain, which had affected parts of Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Kundha and Coonoor, in the Nilgiris over the last week, the Forest Department announced the reopening of a few tourist spots in Coonoor on Friday, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose being among them. The district administration said an average of 30 mm of rain was recorded from Thursday evening to Friday morning across the Nilgiris.

Thousands Flock To Sim's Park in Coonoor To Visit The Show On Inaugural Day
Udhagamandalam: Replicas of a giant-sized lemon, a cocktail glass, a beach cradle, car, an ice cream scoop, a butterfly and a pair of peacocks, among others, all made of different varieties of fruits, literally transported the visitors to Sim's Park in Coonoor in the Nilgiris on Friday to a fairyland. Thousands of people flocked to the Sim's Park on the day to visit the 65th edition of the annual fruit show, which Tamil Nadu chief whip K Ramachandran inaugurated in the presence of the Nilgiris collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and horticulture joint director Sibila Mary and other officials. The replica of lemon is made of thousands of lemons. According to an official source, at least 3.8 tonnes of various fruits were used to make more than 50 structures that are on display at the park. The source said 13 other districts, including Kanyakumari, Trichy, Karur, Thirupathur and Perambalur, were participating in the show. According to horticulture officials, the four-day show features fruits of temperate, tropical and subtropical regions. Cultural programmes would also be part of the show. "The show is a visual treat," said S Kannan, a tourist from Madurai. Sim's Park also displays more than four lakh flower plants in bloom. Vegetable show concludes in The Nilgiris
The valedictory function of the 13th Vegetable Show, the event that kickstarts the summer festival season in the Nilgiris, was held at Nehru Park in Kotagiri on Sunday. As part of the show, vegetables that were exhibited by the Department of Horticulture for vegetable gardens were given away. Rolling prizes and prizes for vegetable kitchen garden competitions in Coonoor, Udhagamandalam and Kotagiri were also handed over. And, special prizes for the different government departments for successfully conducting the vegetable show were also presented. Thousands of tourists thronged the park to witness the show. Present at the valedictory function was H.R. Kaushik, Additional Collector, and officials from the Nilgiris district administration. The next summer show will be the Spices Show in Gudalur from May 9 to 11 and the Rose Show in Udhagamandalam from May 10 to 12.
