Nilgiris to get animal birth control centre
UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Nilgiris is all set to get its first animal birth control (ABC) centre in Coonoor. The Directorate of Animal Husbandry in Chennai has granted approval for the establishment of an ABC centre at the veterinary hospital in Coonoor. The centre will have at least two operation theatres, post-operative care facilities and adjoining kennels. District collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru took the initiative to get the ABC centre in Coonoor on the request of the Nilgiris chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA). The animal husbandry department may depute doctors to conduct ABC surgeries at the Coonoor centre. The NSPCA will collaborate with the department throughout the ABC process. The NSPCA will jointly oversee post-operative care compliance during the 5 -7-day recuperation period, according to Rama Sasmal, secretary, NSPCA. The Animal Welfare Board is focused on making the ABC centre in Coonoor a model facility, according to officials. Its veterinarians will handle post-operative care supported by the NSPCA. The collector has encouraged revenue and animal husbandry officials to identify suitable land in Ooty for a similar setup. 'The collector has agreed to help us conduct a comprehensive dog population survey. This survey will offer valuable insights into dog ownership, stray dog populations and vaccination needs,' said Rama. Stray dogs and stray horses have been posing a menace in the Nilgiris in the past decades. The NSPCA rescues injured dogs and horses in Ooty and Coonoor.

First Plantation Show inaugurated in the Nilgiris
The first-ever Plantation Show was inaugurated as part of the final event of the annual summer festival in the Nilgiris at Kattery Park near Coonoor on Friday. Despite the inclement weather, the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops set up exhibits showcasing traditional lifestyles of farming communities from across Tamil Nadu, with thousands of tourists also visiting the park on their way to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. The Horticulture Department said the plantation show was organised to showcase the tea and coffee industries in the Nilgiris and also to highlight the scope for growing plantation crops such as cashews, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm, and areca nut to farmers. Plantation crops were used in exhibits that portrayed the lifestyle of villagers engaged in farming and agriculture. Cultural events were also organised as part of the plantation show, with the department announcing that awards and prizes will be distributed to farmers growing plantation crops under four different categories at the completion of the show on Sunday (June 1, 2025). This year, the plantation show will signal the end of the summer festival season in the Nilgiris. Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and District Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha were present at the inaugural event. Tourist spots reopen Following the easing of rain, which had affected parts of Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Kundha and Coonoor, in the Nilgiris over the last week, the Forest Department announced the reopening of a few tourist spots in Coonoor on Friday, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose being among them. The district administration said an average of 30 mm of rain was recorded from Thursday evening to Friday morning across the Nilgiris.

Nilgiris rain: Red alert issued for two more days
UDHAGAMANDALAM: The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the Nilgiris for two more days till May 30 even as the district received heavy rain on Wednesday. Avalanche recorded 142 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 7 am on Wednesday, followed by Balacola at 135 mm, Upperbhavani at 129 mm, Gudalur at 53 mm, Devala at 59 mm, Emerald at 64 mm, Kundha at 96 mm, Naduvattam at 68 mm and Ooty at 48.9 mm. Kundha taluk suffered the most damage from tree falls and landslides. Traffic was blocked on the Ooty-Gudalur National Highway as soil was sliding gradually onto the road near Naduvattam. District collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru said two large boulders were sitting precariously balanced on top of the soil, supported by two trees. 'These boulders could roll down onto the road at any moment. Therefore, vehicles are prohibited from using the road until further notice. Only emergency vehicles like ambulances are allowed. Govt buses are allowed only during the daytime. The national highways department along with the forest department is currently working on a plan to address the situation.' Residential areas such as Nondimedu and Manjanakorai, which are part of the Ooty municipality, experienced landslides on Wednesday. In Manjanakorai, a mud house collapsed. Several places in the hill town experienced power outages due to tree falls. EB staff and fire and rescue services personnel were working round the clock to address the rain damage. In Sholurmattam in Kilkotagiri, strong winds caused the collapse of a zinc sheet roof of a govt school. No one was present since it was a school holiday. NDRF and SDRF personnel were visiting vulnerable and damaged areas to provide suggestions. The forest department announced that all tourist spots, except Kodanad viewpoint, under its jurisdiction would remain closed for visitors on Thursday as well. Constant rain made the hills quite cold. The maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 15 degrees Celsius.

Heavy rain throws life out of gear in the Nilgiris
Udhagamandalam: Incessant rain, accompanied by heavy wind, disrupted normal life in the Nilgiris on Saturday. Several trees were uprooted across the district, particularly in Gudalur block, bringing traffic to a grinding halt. Fire and rescue services personnel, along with the highways and revenue departments, are actively working to remove the uprooted trees to restore vehicular movement in affected areas. Power outage was reported in many areas. Avalanche recorded the highest rainfall of 113mm in the 24 hours that ended at 7am on Saturday, followed by Pandalur (108mm), Devala (84mm), Upper Bhavani (37mm) and Ooty (26.4mm). At least 13 trees were uprooted in Ooty, Gudalur and Coonoor taluks. Kotagiri and Coonoor taluks were not affected much, as the rainfall was less. In view of the red alert issued for the Nilgiris, the forest department has announced that Pine Forest and Doddabetta Peak in Ooty would remain closed for tourists on Sunday. Also, boating has been suspended in the Ooty lake for two days until Monday. Nilgiris district administration calls off trekking expeditions on May 25 and 26
In view of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding red alert for the Nilgiris, the district administration has called off 'Trek Tamil Nadu' expeditions on May 25 and 26 and has suspended boating in Ooty Lake for three days. Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru has also banned parking of vehicles under the trees as the wind speed is expected to be very high. Udhagamandalam, Gudalur and Pandalur areas have been witnessing moderate rainfall since Saturday evening. The district administration has ramped up vigil in 283 disaster-prone zones, and about 480 relief camps are in a state of readiness.
