First Plantation Show inaugurated in the Nilgiris
Despite the inclement weather, the Department of Horticulture and Plantation Crops set up exhibits showcasing traditional lifestyles of farming communities from across Tamil Nadu, with thousands of tourists also visiting the park on their way to Coonoor and Udhagamandalam.
The Horticulture Department said the plantation show was organised to showcase the tea and coffee industries in the Nilgiris and also to highlight the scope for growing plantation crops such as cashews, coconut, palmyra, cocoa, oil palm, and areca nut to farmers.
Plantation crops were used in exhibits that portrayed the lifestyle of villagers engaged in farming and agriculture. Cultural events were also organised as part of the plantation show, with the department announcing that awards and prizes will be distributed to farmers growing plantation crops under four different categories at the completion of the show on Sunday (June 1, 2025). This year, the plantation show will signal the end of the summer festival season in the Nilgiris.
Nilgiris Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and District Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha were present at the inaugural event.
Tourist spots reopen
Following the easing of rain, which had affected parts of Udhagamandalam, Gudalur, Kundha and Coonoor, in the Nilgiris over the last week, the Forest Department announced the reopening of a few tourist spots in Coonoor on Friday, with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose being among them.
The district administration said an average of 30 mm of rain was recorded from Thursday evening to Friday morning across the Nilgiris.

Telangana to soon have Tourist police across major attractions in State
Telangana will soon have a dedicated Tourist Police force to enhance the safety and security of visitors, Director General of Police Jitender announced on Wednesday. The move follows a coordination meeting between the Police department and the Telangana Tourism Department at the DGP's office, attended by senior officials including Tourism Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, Additional DGP (Law and Order) Mahesh M Bhagwat, and senior representatives from the Tourism and Film Development Corporation. In the first phase, 80 police personnel will be assigned to the Tourism Department, with the system expected to be fully operational by World Tourism Day on September 27. The Tourist Police will be deployed at major attractions including Anantagiri, Somasila, Ramappa, Yadagirigutta, Pochampally, Nagarjunasagar, Buddhavanam, Bhadrachalam, and Amrabad among others. He also recommended that the Tourism Department develop standard operating procedures for issuing shooting permits and organising special events, enabling police to provide timely and effective security. Film producers and event organisers were urged to give prior notice to facilitate adequate arrangements. Mr. Ranjan said several initiatives were planned to boost tourism in Telangana, stressing the importance of Tourist Police in safeguarding visitors to spiritual, medical, and leisure destinations, and in attracting more domestic and international travellers. Senior police officers from Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda were also present at the meeting.

Dasara elephants march into Mysuru palace in twilight spectacle
The first batch of nine caparisoned elephants led by the majestic tusker Abhimanyu marched into the Mysuru palace marking a twilight spectacle witnessed by hundreds of people despite drizzle and rain, late on Sunday evening. The elephants were camping at Aranya Bhavan since August 4, after the ceremonial 'Gajapayana' at Veeranahosahalli near Nagarahole. The date for their formal welcome and reception at the palace was fixed for August 10,hence the elephants were at their ceremonial best draped in shiny trappings. On Sunday afternoon, Abhimanyu and company were accorded ceremonial send-off from the Aranya Bhavan complete with traditional rituals and floral offerings. There were cultural troupes and ensemble of traditional musicians who were part of the retinue. Accompanying tusker Abhimanyu — who is slated to carry the golden howdah on the day of the Vijayadashmi procession — were elephants Dhananjaya, Bhima, Kanjan, Ekalavya, Prashanth, Kaveri, Balle Lakshmi and Mahendra The elephants marched from Aranya Bhavan in Ashokapuram to Jayamartanda Gate, and were the cynosure of all eyes all along the procession route. Traffic came to a standstill as people lined up on both the sides of the road and cheered the marching elephants. Accompanied by their respective mahouts and kavadis or assistants, the elephants were a picture of majesty as they marched towards the palace gate and made a grand entry around 6 p.m. Enroute, there was heavy rain but it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the public while the elephants remained nonchalant about it. At the Jayamartanda Gate, elected representatives, officials, and priests received Abhimanyu and company. Being Sunday, there was rush at the palace grounds with locals and tourists alike gathering in large numbers to catch a glimpse of the Dasara elephants. District in charge minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Animal Husbandry Venkatesh, MLAs T.S. Srivatsa and G.T. Deve Gowda, deputy commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, Commissioner of Police Seema Latkar, Deputy Conservator of Forest Prabhugoud and others were present. The elephants will rest for a day or two after which they will be subjected to daily rehearsal along the procession route from the palace to Bannimantap grounds. In due course, the second batch of another five elephants will join them in preparation for the Dasara celebrations. The arrival of Abhimanyu and his team also signals the countdown to Dasara and the palace ground will be a beehive of activity till the conclusion of the festivities.

RCB captain Rajat Patidar's old phone number gets reassigned to Chhattisgarh teen; boys receive calls from Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers
Indian cricketer Rajat Patidar recently faced an unusual situation involving his old mobile number, two young cricket fans, and local police intervention. According to an NDTV report, Patidar's old mobile number, the one in question, was inactive for over 90 days, and was reassigned by his telecom provider. The number was purchased by a teenager named Manish from Gariaband district in Chhattisgarh, who activated it with a Jio SIM card in late June. After activating the number, Manish and his friend Khemraj noticed the WhatsApp profile still showed Rajat Patidar's photo. Further, they received calls from famous cricketers, including Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who were trying to contact Patidar. Unaware of the number's past owner, the boys were surprised. Later, Patidar contacted Manish directly and asked for the number back, explaining that it was important for his communication with coaches, teammates, and close contacts. However, Manish and Khemraj didn't believe it was really Patidar. They said, 'And we're MS Dhoni,' and refused the request. Patidar then warned the teenagers of legal action. Within ten minutes, local police arrived at Manish's house, after which the boys returned the SIM card. Khemraj said the experience was unforgettable. 'I got to speak to Kohli because of a wrong number. My life's goal is complete,' NDTV quoted Khemraj.
