What's ahead for Monday's severe weather

DES MOINES, Iowa — We are watching the skies closely as many dynamics are coming together for severe weather in parts of the state by Monday evening. The ingredients we have include warm temperatures, high dewpoints (moisture), and wind shear of great speed and directional change with height. The one last thing we need is a lifting mechanism moving into the primed atmosphere to lead to storm development. It all comes down to an approaching cold front, and whether it moves in time to meet with these ingredients late afternoon and evening to cause storms to form. Models vary in the placement of the storm development this evening. A few supercell storms are expected to develop along the front and move into Central and Northern Iowa. Anytime after 5:00 p.m. and especially 7:00 p.m. on, you'll want to be near a location where you can take cover, if needed, and have a radar app, like 13WarnMe to be able to watch for storms coming your way. Here is a look at the morning run of the GRAF model: Here is a look at the HRRR model: CAPE (which is storm energy) and shear (which is twist of the winds with height by either direction or speed) will both maximize during the afternoon hours. As the cold front hits these two elements, we could get lift to allow storms to form sporadic in nature along the front in western Iowa and move into Central Iowa. The tornado threat appears to be highest in north central Iowa this evening. Although a tornado could fire up in any storm that forms along the front. The weather team will be live through the evening on WHO 13, WHO13+, and Iowa's Weather Channel for tornado warnings tonight. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowans are encouraged to practice their severe-weather plans on Wednesday. Outdoor warning sirens will sound at 10:00 a.m. as part of the statewide Tornado Drill. It's a way to test the system and give people a chance to prepare better for severe weather. The sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors when severe weather strikes, not those who are indoors. If you are outside and hear the sirens, seek shelter immediately. They also say you should have multiple ways of receiving weather watches and warnings, like apps, TV, and a weather radio. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. A quick burst of snow will be possible across the state, making for slick conditions as kids head home from school and into the evening commute. A messier weather system arrives Saturday, bringing the potential for snow throughout the day. A heavier band of snow could develop northwest of the metro, causing an area of higher totals. More mixed precipitation will be possible in southern Iowa. Friday's system will not last long but could bring an intense burst of snow in a brief period. One to two inches of snow will be possible, and it will be fluffier snow similar to what we saw earlier this week. Saturday's system will last longer and drop more snow. By the end of the day, 2-4″ will be possible across the state with an elevated area northwest of the metro where higher totals are expected, closer to the 5-8″ range. Snowy and cold conditions make for difficult central Iowa travel Wednesday

DES MOINES, Iowa – A winter storm has settled in across Iowa, bringing heavy snow and bitter cold to parts of the state. This will make for tough travel for almost all day Wednesday into Thursday morning. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for most of the state until midnight. This is where snow totals are expected to be highest, generally in the 4-7″ range. Less snow is expected in northern and northwestern Iowa, where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. Snow will continue pretty much all day Wednesday. Snowfall will be heaviest in the morning and afternoon hours, with the snow becoming lighter as the afternoon goes on. By this evening, flurries should wrap up. Travel will therefore be most difficult in the morning and afternoon hours and it will be most difficult to keep roads clear. Slick conditions persist into the evening and overnight hours but the snow won't be as heavy, meaning crews will have a better chance to clear roads up. Visibility will also improve. As the snow moves out, brutally cold air moves in. Temperatures will only get to the mid-teens with wind chills mostly staying below zero. Overnight lows fall below zero, sending wind chills near -20°. A brief weather system could bring some light snow Friday, followed by another system Saturday that could drop at least a couple inches. Monday brings more snow chances to the forecast.
