MP picked for global youth parliament role

MP Hassan Ibrahim Hassan has been picked to represent the Arab Group on the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Young Parliamentarians' Bureau. His appointment was confirmed by the Union's Governing Council after Arab members backed his nomination during the 150th General Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Speaking after the decision, the MP said it showed how Bahrain's parliamentary work and its younger voices are being heard abroad. He credited the backing of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who he called the strongest supporter of young Bahrainis.

Speaker Meets with Russian Federation Council Chairwoman on Sidelines of IPU in Tashkent

Tashkent: Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives and Head of Bahrain's parliamentary delegation, met with Valentina Matvienko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, on the sidelines of the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Al Musallam emphasised the deep-rooted ties between the Kingdom of Bahrain and Russia, highlighting their steady progress through strategic partnership and key joint projects that serve the common interests of both countries. He noted that these relations are supported by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Excellency Vladimir Putin, President of Russia. According to Bahrain News Agency, the Speaker commended the ongoing parliamentary cooperation and the shared commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. He also commended both countries' support for just Arab causes and their efforts to promote regional peace and security. Matvienko expressed Russia's appreciation for its strong ties with the Kingdom and for the level of cooperation and mutual understanding across official and parliamentary platforms. She underscored the importance of enhancing collaboration in vital sectors, particularly the economy, tourism, and education. She also emphasised the council's commitment to advancing parliamentary cooperation with Bahrain's Council of Representatives and Shura Council. She commended the Kingdom's development under the leadership of His Majesty the King, its active diplomatic role on the international stage, and its contributions to global security, stability, and the promotion of coexistence and tolerance. The meeting was attended by MP Ahmed Sabah Al Salloom; MP Hassan Ibrahim Hassan; Hala Ramzi, member of the Shura Council; Mohammed Ibrahim Al Sisi Al Buainain, Secretary General of the Council of Representatives; and Kareema Mohammed Al Abbasi, Secretary General of the Shura Council.

Bahrain's Delegation Advocates for Women's Role in Peacebuilding at Tashkent Forum

Tashkent: Bahrain's parliamentary delegation, led by Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, participated in the Forum of Women Parliamentarians held alongside the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent. The forum focused on a draft resolution regarding the two-state solution in Palestine from a gender perspective. According to Bahrain News Agency, the delegation called for increased support for initiatives empowering women to lead in diplomacy, non-governmental organizations, education, human rights, and economic development. The delegation stressed the importance of establishing laws that ensure women's rights and enhancing their role in peacebuilding efforts. Fakhro highlighted the necessity of involving women in negotiations and reconstruction activities to achieve peace. The delegation also comprised Hala Ramzi Fayez, a member of the Shura Council and the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians; Dalal Jassim Al Zayed, member of the Shura Council; M P Maryam Saleh Al Dhaen, and MP Dr. Mahdi Al Showaikh. The forum marked its 40th anniversary and elected the President of the 39th session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Participants reviewed recent initiatives and discussions aimed at promoting gender equality across IPU platforms.

Omani delegation takes part in Tashkent meetings of the IPU

Tashkent: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its accompanying meetings being held in Tashkent, the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan. During the five-day participation, Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, met with Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan. An official discussion session was held between the two sides, during which the importance of advancing Omani-Uzbek relations to broader horizons was emphasised. This will contribute to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in all fields, enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise at the level of legislative councils, and enhancing cooperation in the economic and investment fields between the two countries. The Council of Oman's delegation participating in the General Assembly and its accompanying meetings was headed by Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council. The General Assembly's agenda will include the election of the President of the 150th General Assembly, consideration of requests to include an emergency item on the General Assembly's agenda, and a general debate, scheduled to be titled 'Parliamentary Work for Development and Social Justice.' The Omani delegation participated in the coordination meetings of the Arab Parliamentary Group, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Union of Parliaments of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Member States, and the meeting of the Gulf Councils with the Grulac Group and Latin American countries. It will also participate in the meetings of the Union's Governing Council, the Union's General Assembly, the Women Parliamentarians Forum, the Young Parliamentarians Forum, and other accompanying meetings. The Secretary-General of the Shura Council will participate in the meetings of the Association of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments. The Omani delegation will also participate in the meetings of the Inter-Parliamentary Union's standing committees, represented by the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, the Standing Committee on International Peace and Security, and the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs. The IPU committee meetings are scheduled to witness discussions on a number of topics, including: conflicts affecting sustainable development, a discussion on the draft resolution on the role of parliaments in advancing the two-state solution in the State of Palestine, and follow-up on the implementation of a resolution on the impact of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and elections. A number of workshops and discussion panels will be held on the sidelines of the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union to discuss a number of issues, including leveraging religious and moral values to advance parliamentary dialogue and peaceful coexistence, and enhancing parliamentary communication. The participating delegation of the Council of Oman Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, Dr. Hanifa bint Ahmed Al Qasimi, Member of the State Council, Dr. Shamsa bint Masoud Al Shaibani, Member of the State Council, Khwaidem bin Mohammed Al Maashani, Ammar bin Salem Al Saadi, and Walid bin Salem Al Maliki, members of the Shura Council. It is worth noting that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the largest global international parliamentary organisation with a long history dating back to June 30, 1889. It comprises more than 179 parliaments, in addition to 65 non-permanent members representing international institutions and civil society organisations. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Union works for peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development through political dialogue, cooperation, and parliamentary work, in addition to enhancing women's access to parliament.
