Second suspect sentenced for role in deadly 2023 shooting outside Carolina Forest Planet Fitness
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A second man charged in a deadly 2023 shooting outside a Carolina Forest Planet Fitness has been sentenced for his role in the incident, the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office said Friday. Branden Huertas, 43, of Trumbull, Connecticut, pleaded guilty on Thursday to accessory after the fact of murder. He was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Michael G. Nettles to 15 years in prison, the maximum sentence for the charge. However, Nettles suspended Huertas' sentence to 10 years of prison and three years of probation, which includes requirements such as mental health treatment, drug and alcohol treatment, and counseling during his probation, the solicitor's office said. Huertas' co-defendant, Abdullah Seifullah, was convicted Thursday of the murder and sentenced to life in prison. David Roldan-Dimas of York County, South Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said. It happened outside a Carolina Forest Planet Fitness gym. During the prosecution's closing arguments, they said Seifullah killed Roldan-Dimas because he needed Roldan-Dimas' Camero. They said Seifullah's car could not be driven and that he needed a car to drive to Connecticut. Roldan-Dimas was shot in his left shoulder, with the bullet going through several organs and down his back, the prosecution said. He only drove a few feet before he crashed into another car and died. * * * Caleb is a digital producer at News13. Caleb joined the team in January 2023 after graduating from Liberty University. HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Opening statements started Tuesday in the Horry County murder trial of one of two men accused in the killing of a 20-year-old man outside a Planet Fitness gym in Carolina Forest, according to the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office. Abdullah Seifullah, 45, is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime and criminal conspiracy in the June 2023 death of David Roldan-Dimas, 20, of York County. Roldan-Dimas was shot and killed while he sat in a black Chevrolet Camaro on Glenforest Road, according to authorities, who said the Camaro had hit a parked Nissan SUV. Seifullah and Branden Huertas, were arrested on unrelated charges in February 2024 in Connecticut. Seifullah was returned to Horry County and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center last February, according to online records. Huertas was extradited to Horry County in November and charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, accessory before the fact and accessory after the fact. He was scheduled to stand trial in March but has since entered a plea and is waiting to be sentenced, according to Horry County's online public records. Woman accused in Horry County cross-burning back in jail for allegedly violating bond in unrelated indecent exposure case
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A woman accused of intimidating her Black neighbors by taking part in a November 2023 cross-burning near Conway is back in jail after she allegedly violated the conditions of her bond in a separate, unrelated case. Alexis Hartnett, who is still awaiting trial in the cross-burning case, was arrested after allegedly violating her home-detention by returning to Horry County without a valid reason, such as a court date or a specific appointment with her lawyer, the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office said. She was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Thursday. Hartnett was placed on home detention after being accused of indecent exposure in March 2024. She was released on a $10,000 bond after the arrest, and Judge Bradley D. Mayers ordered her not to have any contact with the victim in the case. Hartnett and her boyfriend, Worden Butler were accused of harassment after the cross-burning incident that occurred during Thanksgiving weekend in 2023. He pleaded guilty in January to second-degree harassment and was sentenced to time served. The cross-burning incident led FBI agents to search the home on Corbett Drive as part of a civil-rights investigation. The case also renewed calls for a state-level hate–crime law in South Carolina * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. Myrtle Beach man given maximum sentence for assault on Conway officer
CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Myrtle Beach man pleaded guilty and was given the maximum sentence for assaulting a Conway police officer in 2023, the 15th Circuit Solicitor's Office said Friday. Paul Charles Morphy, 60, pleaded guilty Thursday to assault on a police officer while resisting arrest and second-degree non-violent burglary before his case was set to go on trial in June. Circuit Court Judge David P. Caraker Jr. sentenced Morphy to 10 years in prison. Officers responded on Dec. 19, 2023, to a 911 call about a burglary in progress at the Advanced Car Care on Church Street in Conway, the solicitor's office said. Officers spoke with the owner of the business, who said that a door of the store was open and that a 1965 Mustang was now missing. Officers reviewed City Pole cameras in the area and were able to locate Morphy as well as the missing vehicle, according to the solicitor's office. A Conway officer identified Morphy and pursued him on foot. Once Morphy was caught, he resisted arrest and tried to disarm the officer, the solicitor's office said. The struggle escalated after Morphy hit the officer with a closed fist and pushed his fingers into the officer's eyes. Morphy was apprehended shortly after and taken into custody without further incident. He was given the maximum sentence for the assault charge. * * * Caleb is a digital producer at News13.
