Former Nebraska quarterback Richard Torres to start for Incarnate Word in season opener

A former Husker quarterback is set to start in the season opener for a highly ranked FCS team. According to Pete Thamel, Incarnate Word named Richard Torres the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. Torres is entering his third season with the Cardinals after spending his freshman year at Nebraska in 2022. He committed to the Huskers as a three-star prospect out of Southside High School in San Antonio, Texas, the lone Texan in Nebraska's 2022 recruiting class. Torres now earns the quarterback role with Incarnate Ward, a team that finished in the top 10 in the FCS in passing for the fifth straight year. Torres holds two years of eligibility left after playing six games in each of his last two seasons. In 2024, he tossed five completions for 64 yards and one touchdown. In 2023, Torres threw 42-of-67 for 544 yards and six touchdowns, earning his Third Team FCS 2023 Freshman All-American. Torres also earned FCS national freshman of the week following a 161-yard, three-touchdown day to lift the Cardinals past McNeese. He also tossed a season-high 307 passing yards against Lamar. At Nebraska, Torres did not appear in a game for the Huskers during the 2022 season, redshirting before transferring to Incarnate Word. The Cardinals are rising up in the FCS, starting the season ranked No. 4 in the FCS preseason poll after finishing last season in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Incarnate Word opens the season against Nicholls on Aug. 23 at noon.
