Mass. man drove over 140 mph to evade New Hampshire troopers, police said

A Massachusetts man drove over 140 mph to evade police officers in New Hampshire on Monday morning, according to New Hampshire State Police. Brandon E. Babcock, 22, of Salem, was one of dozens of people stopped in New Hampshire during a Memorial Day traffic enforcement initiative by New Hampshire State Police. Babcock had been driving a white 2024 Corvette on the northbound side of Interstate 93 in Salem, New Hampshire, at around 7:45 a.m. on May 26 when troopers spotted him reaching speeds of 110 mph, the department said. When troopers tried to pull Babcock over, he sped up 'significantly' and passed other drivers across the traffic lanes, the department said. Babcock was tracked by the New Hampshire State Police Air Wing used in the police's Memorial Day traffic initiative, and he reached speeds up to 140 mph as he fled from the troopers, the department said. Babcock then got off the highway at Exit 3 and continued driving on side roads in Windham. Troopers in the Air Wing Unit tracked the Corvette and let police on the ground know its whereabouts. A trooper was able to pull Babcock over on Johnson Road and arrest him on multiple charges, including reckless driving and disobeying an officer, the department said. Babcock was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Salem District Court in New Hampshire on July 17. Minimum penalties for reckless driving in New Hampshire include a $620 fine, a 60-day loss of driver's license and an additional mandatory penalty assessment. The standard fine for driving 86 mph or higher is $434 in the Granite State.
