Nor Farah Ain eyes 2026 Commonwealth Games after ASN win

PETALING JAYA: The ground-breaking success of being crowned Sportswoman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards (ASN) has fuelled the spirit of national lawn bowler Nor Farah Ain Abdullah for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Nor Farah said it will be no walk in the park to Glasgow as she has to first jostle for a place at the quadrennial games with other senior lawn bowlers. 'My biggest target is to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games but I have to compete against my seniors first,' she said after the 2024 ASN here today. After rising to prominence in 2024 with the Fours gold medal at the 15th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship (Pattaya, Thailand), the world number one made history by becoming the first lawn bowler to win the National Sportswoman trophy. Nor Farah, who is resting after sustaining a right shoulder injury, hopes to return to action at the 2025 Hong Kong International Lawn Bowls Classic scheduled for this November. Commenting on the award she received today, Nor Farah described it as the biggest achievement in her career and thanked Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation, notably president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, and the National Sports Council for the strong support given to her and the sport of lawn bowling all these years. Nor Farah stole the limelight after winning the women's singles gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships at Guernsey, Channel Islands, in April last year. Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, who received the Sportsman of the Year Award on behalf of national men's doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, said the recognition received by the 2022 world doubles champions was the highest honour for badminton in the country. Kenny hopes that the success will motivate not just Aaron-Wooi Yik but also other shuttlers to produce excellent results and bring glory to the country on the world stage. Aaron-Wooi Yik were absent as they are participating in the 2025 Thailand Open tournament, which runs from today until Sunday. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who are currently ranked world fifth, retained their Olympic bronze medal when they defeated Danish pair Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In another development, Kenny was tight-lipped about the latest status of the country's top women's doubles pair of Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, whose contract with BAM is under negotiation after it expired last December. BAM deputy president 1 Datuk V. Subramaniam said on Saturday that their future under the BAM flagship would be determined after the conclusion of the 2025 Thailand Open.

'Guru of Sarawak Bowling' honoured with Sport Leadership Award

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) deputy president Sunny Si was conferred the Sport Leadership Award at the 2024 National Sports Awards today in recognition of his decades-long contribution to bowling and sports development in the country. President of the Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) since 1988, Sunny has been the architect behind Sarawak's transformation into a bowling powerhouse, earning him the title "Guru of Sarawak Bowling." Under his visionary leadership, Sarawak have consistently dominated the national bowling scene, including an outstanding performance at the 2024 Sukma, where the host state captured five gold, one silver and two bronze medals — topping the bowling medal tally for the fifth time in a row. Sunny's efforts have also paved the way for Sarawak-born athletes to shine on the international and national stage. Among them are world champion Jacqueline Sijore (2011), Gillian Lim, winner of the Malaysia Open and National Championships in 2024, and rising stars such as Ethan Damien Goh, Gordon Tsen, Nur Hazirah Ramli, and Lavinia Kho, the 2023 Malaysian Open champion. Last year, Sunny made history by becoming the first Sarawakian to be elected MTBC deputy president — a role that affirms East Malaysia's growing prominence in the national sports arena. He previously served for many years as vice president and general councillor under the late Datuk Dr. P.S. Nathan, who was also a recipient of the Sport Leadership Award in 2005. Sunny's influence extends far beyond bowling. He sits on the Board of Management of the Sarawak Sports Corporation, has served as secretary general of the Sarawak Shooting Association, and was a board member of the Sarawak State Sports Council, playing key roles in advancing grassroots and high-performance sport in the state. Reacting to the award, Sunny expressed deep gratitude to those who have supported his journey. "I am deeply honoured to receive the Anugerah Kepimpinan Sukan Negara," he said. "My sincere appreciation goes to the Majlis Sukan Negri Sarawak for the gracious nomination, and to the Majlis Sukan Negara for their endorsement and support. "This recognition would not have been possible without the steadfast backing of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) and the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), whose commitment to sports development continues to inspire and empower many across the nation. "I am profoundly grateful to the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) and ABAS for giving me the opportunity to serve a sport I hold so dearly. Their belief in my vision has been a constant source of motivation. "I accept this award not as a personal accolade, but as a tribute to the tireless efforts of all who have journeyed with me — mentors, peers, athletes, and volunteers alike. It stands as a reminder of our shared commitment to uplifting Malaysian sport through integrity, inclusion, and visionary leadership." Adding further glow to the day, the Malaysian women's bowling team were named Team of the Year, in recognition of their dominant display at the Asian Championships in Bangkok last year. The six-member squad — Sin Li Jane, Natasha Roslan, Gillian, Nora Lyana Nastasia Norkamal, Nur Syazwani Sahar and Faten Najihah Ahmad Faik — clinched the overall title for the women's category with a medal haul of three gold, two silver and two bronze. With most of the team currently competing on the PWBA Tour in the United States, Faten accepted the award on the team's behalf.

Zii Jia targets comeback at Japan Open in July

PETALING JAYA: Professional men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia expects to make his competitive return at the Japan Open, which will be held in Tokyo from July 15 to 20. Zii Jia said he does not want to rush his return following the ankle ligament injury he sustained earlier. 'I think it's a bit too soon to return at the 2025 US Open in Iowa (June 24-29), and I'll probably delay my comeback. 'Hopefully, I'll be able to return at the Japan Open and the China Open (July 22-27),' he told reporters after the 2024 National Sports Awards (ASN) ceremony here today. Zii Jia last competed at the 2025 All England in Birmingham from March 11 to 16, where he was knocked out in the first round by Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long 21-19, 16-21, 12-21. The world number eight subsequently withdrew from the Swiss Open in Basel (March 18–23) due to the ankle injury. The 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medallist also expressed hope that the new Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, can make a difference to the country's badminton scene. Last Saturday, Tengku Zafrul was elected unopposed as the president during the 80th BAM Annual General Meeting (AGM). Zii Jia, who was one of the nominees for the 2024 Sportsman of the Year, hoped to win the prestigious national award one day. Men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were crowned 2024 National Sportsman of the Year, their second title after winning the honour in 2022, while the 2024 National Sportswoman award went to lawn bowler Nor Farah Ain Abdullah.
