Tina Knowles shudders at what could have happened after breast cancer diagnosis
Beyoncé Knowles' mom, Tina Knowles, is sharing a warning to other women: Don't delay your next mammogram. On Tuesday, April 22, in an interview with People magazine, the matriarch of the Knowles family revealed she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. She continued, noting that if she hadn't skipped her last mammogram, it likely wouldn't have progressed as far as it did. After being labeled one of the World's Most Beautiful by People magazine, she told the publication that she 'struggled with whether I would share that (cancer) journey' in her new book 'Matriarch,' also released on April 22. 'I'm very private,' Tina Knowles continued. 'But I decided to share it because I think it's a lot of lessons in it for other women.' According to her doctors, the business woman was told that if she hadn't postponed her mammogram, the cancer found in her breast would have only been Stage 0, she told CBS News' Gayle King in a separate interview. 'I've always tried to take care of myself. I was in disbelief,' she told King. Explaining that she had postponed her mammogram due to COVID-19, Tina Knowles said her story is one other women can learn from. 'I think as women, sometimes we get so busy and we get so wrapped up and running around, but you must go get your test. Because if I had not gotten my test early, I mean, I shudder to think what could have happened to me,' she told People. As People reported, while Tina Knowles doesn't have a familial history of breast cancer, her ex-husband, Mathew Knowles, does. In 2020, Mathew Knowles also announced his Stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis, revealing that he also has the BRCA2 gene mutation. According to the National Cancer Institute, the BRCA2 gene is a gene that produces 'proteins that help repair damaged DNA.' Those with a gene mutation 'have increased risks of several cancers—most notably breast and ovarian cancer.' In 2024, Tina Knowles, 71, underwent a lumpectomy to have the malignant tumor removed. While she is now cancer-free, she experienced 'a serious post-surgical infection,' CBS News reported. As a result, she almost missed Glamour's 2024 Women of the Year event where she was honored. Beyoncé encouraged her mom to skip the event and rest. 'A lot of my life, I just refused to be recognized. I would never take an award. I would never want the attention to me … and this was my saying, 'I deserve this,'' she said. Now, Tina Knowles told People she's 'healthier, eating better, I lost weight,' post cancer diagnosis. She adds that her focus is now on giving 'people hope' and 'making the best of every day that I have left in this life.'

Tina Knowles reveals previous breast cancer diagnosis and recalls Beyoncé's reaction
Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles, is opening up about her health. In her new book, 'Matriarch: A Memoir,' which was released on April 22, Knowles revealed she was previously diagnosed with breast cancer. Knowles said she learned of her diagnosis at a mammogram appointment that had been put off for years. 'My doctor told me I had breast cancer. A small tumor in my left breast that was cancerous; the larger tumor in my right breast was benign, but it would also have to go,' she wrote in her memoir. 'She said I was Stage 1A, assuring me my prognosis was good. The next step was to talk to an oncologist and a breast surgeon. 'We feel like we got this super early,' she said. 'You're going to be fine,'' Knowles continued. Knowles said she hesitated telling Beyoncé about her diagnosis at night because she knew her daughter 'wouldn't be able to sleep' so she waited until the day to share the news. 'She took it well, staying positive, and I could already feel her mind racing, focusing on this as a task to tackle with precision,' she said of how Beyoncé reacted to her breast cancer diagnosis. 'She would find me the top specialist, and I distinctively remember her telling me, 'I want you to get a second opinion on whatever the course of treatment is,'' Knowles added. Knowles explained that her daughter 'lined up one of the top breast surgery specialists in the country' for her to get a private consult. She recalled liking the private-practice breast surgeon's 'energy' immediately. A few days later, she met with a hospital surgeon and then a hospital oncologist, who 'wasn't receptive' to any of her questions and she made her feel 'depressed and confused.' This experience is what made Knowles realize the importance of getting a second opinion. 'I made my decision: I wasn't going with the hospital surgeon who talked down to me, I went with the private surgeon, the woman who gave me options and hope. She recommended a different oncologist at the hospital, one who she thought would be a better fit for me,' she said. 'That is the lesson I want to share: Even if I had gone with the hospital surgeon, I could have asked for another oncologist,' Knowles continued. 'A lot of people, especially Black people, feel they have to go with the doctor they are given even if we are not treated well. You deserve second opinions, and it's your opinion that sets the decision.' After the surgery, which also included a breast reduction, Knowles wrote that she was cancer-free. She said she moved into Beyoncé's house so her family could take care of her while she recovered. 'The Carter household is always bustling with activity,' she said. Knowles said she recovered in time to attend Glamour's 2024 Women of the Year event in October, where she was receiving an award. It when then, while she was accepting the accolade and seeing her daughters' faces in the audience, that she realized that she was having a 'full-circle moment.' ''They are my crew, my tribe, my rocks, my ride-or-dies,' Knowles recalls saying of her daughters during her speech. ''They have been right there by my side at the lowest points in my life... and they cheered me on at the highest points of my life. Making me feel that I can conquer anything.'' 'Matriarch: A Memoir' is the latest selection to be chosen for Oprah's Book Club. In a press release shared on April 22, Oprah Winfrey praised Knowles' new book. 'Some of you might know Tina Knowles as the mother of a superstar — as in Beyoncé — but she is also a highly successful entrepreneur, fashion designer, philanthropist, and now author of this fascinating memoir of her journey to become the global figure she is today,' she said. 'We learn how the strength and wisdom of the women who came before her fueled Tina's passion to achieve and gave her the ability to nurture her own daughters into the incredible women they are today,' Winfrey added. In the same release, Knowles shared her excitement over Winfrey endorsing her book. 'Getting the seal of approval from Oprah, and knowing that she read it and loved it, made it all OK,' she said in a statement. 'I mean, it's Oprah!! She is the queen of many things but definitely the quintessential queen of books. Being told that my book would be a pick for her book club, I thought I had died and gone to Heaven.'

Tina Knowles Revealed Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis
You know Tina Knowles, mother to Beyoncé and Solange. In a new interview with Gayle King for CBS Mornings, Tina revealed that she was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer last year. Tina revealed to Gayle that doctors discovered two tumors in her left breast during a mammogram appointment that had been delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually rescheduled for 2024. "I've always tried to take care of myself," she said. "I just…was in disbelief." Tina also said that her doctors later informed her that, if she hadn't missed her screening, the detection might have occurred at Stage 0, which is when the cancer hasn't yet spread beyond the tissue. Luckily, Tina was able to undergo a lumpectomy last August and is now cancer-free. She also said that Beyoncé and Solange, along with several of her friends, accompanied her on the day of the surgery. "I was nervous, so they started just joking with me," Tina recalled, revealing that Solange played her the viral "demure" video to help put her at ease. Solange also sang the song "Walk With Me" along with Tina's niece Angie Beyincé before the surgery. "I said, 'I'm just so happy that y'all are here,'" Tina said. Tina also said that, following surgery, she'd developed a serious infection last fall that almost prevented her from attending Glamour's 2024 Women of the Year event — and that Beyoncé, amongst other family members, urged her to rest. "Mama, you're not yourself," Tina recalled Beyoncé telling her. "She was like, 'Your health is more important. Don't go.'" But Tina managed to attend the event and give a speech regardless of how she was feeling. "A lot of my life, I just refused to be recognized," she said while explaining the reason why she ultimately pushed through. "I would never take an award. I would never want the attention to me…and this was my saying, 'I deserve this.'" Steve Granitz / FilmMagic

Beyonce's mom Tina Knowles reveals whole family laughed at video of 'trans woman' before breast cancer surgery
Beyoncé's mom Tina Knowles shared that she and her superstar family watched a video by a trans social media star for a moment of levity before her breast cancer surgery. Tina, 71, revealed her secret breast cancer battle during an interview with CBS Mornings' Gayle King on Monday and explained how her family supporter her throughout the terrifying ordeal. 'I was nervous and so they started just joking with me... Solange pulls out this video of a trans woman and she's saying, "I'm very demure," and we're just laughing at it...,' Knowles said, referring to trans social media sensation Jools Lebron, who is known for the viral phrase 'very mindful, very demure.' Tina continued: 'And so Solange is showing me this and we just look at it right before the surgery so I start laughing and get out of my head.' The famous mom added that Beyoncé and her younger sister Solange then sang a Destiny's Child song called Walk with Me. 'It's about God walking with you into something and protecting you,' Tina said through tears. 'And I went in there feeling just like God has got me.' Tina said she was recently diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer after doctors discovered two tumors during a mammogram appointment. The Chicago-based content creator became a sensation overnight in early August when she posted a video of herself while showing her followers how they should present themselves in an office setting The fashion designer added that although she's recovered from the cancer, she suffered significant hurdles along the way. She told CBS Mornings she contracted a post-surgical infection so bad that she almost bailed on Glamour's 2024 Women of the Year event in October. Tina said Beyoncé in particular urged her to rest rather than attend the event - but she pushed through because it was important to her. 'A lot of my life, I just refused to be recognized. I would never take an award. I would never want the attention to me … and this was my saying, "I deserve this,"' she said. Tina also revealed that her cancer might have been caught sooner if she hadn't delayed her mammogram appointment. Doctors told her that if she maintained regular screenings, which are scheduled every one to two years for women over the age of 55, the cancer may have been caught at Stage 0 instead of Stage 1. Stage 0 is when the cancer has not spread beyond the breast tissue, per the American Cancer Society. Tina was seen with Beyoncé, her husband Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy at Mufasa: The Lion King premiere in Los Angeles last December. The family appeared to be in the holiday spirit at the glitzy event after Jay-Z had just hit back against claims he gang-raped a 13-year-old girl with Diddy. Tina also became embroiled in the controversy after she appeared to like an Instagram post reporting the accusations against her son-in-law. She told fans she was 'hacked' and did not like the post of her own accord. 'I was Hacked! As you all know I do not play about my family. So if you see something uncharacteristic of me just know it is not me' she wrote on her own Instagram. Jay-Z angrily denied the attack took place and the lawsuit against him was dismissed in February 2025. He is now suing the woman who made the allegations about him for defamation.

Tina Knowles Just Shared Some Heartbreaking Health News, Fans Respond
Fans are pouring out their love and support for Tina Knowles who just announced her experience with a devastating health battle. The mother of Beyoncé and Solange spoke with Gayle King on 'CBS Mornings' in an interview that aired Tuesday (April 22). Knowles shared that she delayed a mammogram appointment after missing it during the COVID-19 pandemic. She didn't reschedule her routine screening until years later in 2024. She admitted how she has 'always tried to take care of myself. I just…was in disbelief,' after doctors discovered two tumors in her left breast in August. She underwent a lumpectomy, also referred to as a partial mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery, to remove a breast tumor while preserving the breast itself. Not long after, the 71-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast. One of the removed tumors were benign, but the other had Stage 1 cancer. 'I was nervous,' she recalled before her surgery. She also added how her daughters, Beyoncé, 43, Solange, 38, and a few friends visited her in the hospital for support during her secret health battle. 'I just went in there feeling just like God has got me,' she added. Despite the delay, the cancer was considered slow-growing. Knowles was told that if she had maintained her regular screenings, instead of Stage 1, detection might have occurred at Stage 0. According to the American Cancer Society, Stage 0 is when the cancer has not spread beyond the breast tissue. After the surgery, the Texas native had developed an infection that almost forced her to miss Glamour's 2024 Women of the Year ceremony that October, where she was being honored. Knowles remembered Beyoncé was noticing something was off about her, and encouraged her not to attend the event. 'She was like, 'Your health is more important. Don't go,'' the fashion designer remembered. But she was adamant on accepting the award in person after admitting she 'refused to be recognized' for 'a lot of my life.' She added: 'I would never take an award. I would never want the attention to me. This was my saying, 'I deserve this.' ' As of today, Knowles is now cancer-free. Fans took to X to share their support for the beloved matriarch. Knowles' ex-husband of 30 years, Mathew Knowles, was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. He underwent a mastectomy and is now cancer free. He's an avid advocate for early detection and genetic testing for men. 'Data show that one out of six new breast cancers develop in people who are in the age range of 40 to 50,' Pouneh Razavi, M.D., medical doctor and featured expert at John Hopkins Medicine, says. 'Cancers detected during screenings are usually early-stage, and the earlier we catch a cancer, the better the prognosis and survival rate for the patient.' Patients are encouraged to start screenings at age 40. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
