Boston Marathon 2025: Date, start time, route, how to watch and everything you need to know about the prestigious race

On Monday, over 30,000 runners will gather to take part in one of the most prestigious races in the United States. The 2025 Boston Marathon kicks off early, with events starting at 6 a.m. ET. Monday will mark the 129th running of the Boston Marathon. Both of last year's champions from the men's and women's side will look to repeat in 2025, with one of them going for a historic victory. With the event just around the corner, here's everything you need to know about the 2025 Boston Marathon. The 2025 Boston Marathon will be held Monday, April 21. The event is traditionally held on Patriots' Day, which commemorates the inaugural battles of the American Revolution. Patriots' Day is observed in the following seven states: Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and North Dakota observe the holiday on the third Monday in April, which is traditionally when the Boston Marathon takes place. The other three stats observe Patriots' Day on April 19. The 2025 Boston Marathon kicks off early, with the military march starting at 6 a.m. ET. The men's and women's wheelchair races begin just after 9 a.m. ET. Below is a full list of start times for the 2025 Boston Marathon. All times are ET. 6 a.m.: Military march 9:06 a.m.: Men's wheelchair 9:09 a.m.: Women's wheelchair 9:30 a.m.: Handcycles & Duos 9:37 a.m.: Professional men 9:47 a.m.: Professional women 9:50 a.m.: Para athletics division 10:00 a.m.: Wave 1 10:25 a.m.: Wave 2 10:50 a.m.: Wave 3 11:15 a.m.: Wave 4 Each wave features open division runners. Runners are put into different waves depending on their pace. The 2025 Boston Marathon will start in Hopkinton. Runners will then reach Ashland at roughly the four-mile mark and proceed to Framingham six miles in. From there, runners will pass through Natick and Wellesley, which sits just before the halfway point. Newton and Brookline mark the final stretch before the race ends on Boylston Street in Boston. The entire course length is 26 miles and 385 yards — or 26.2 miles — which is standard marathon length. The finish line is located in Copley Square, a public square in Boston known for its historical landmarks. Both 2024 champions on the men's and women's side will compete again in 2025. Sisay Lemma, an Ethiopian runner, will look to win it all again on the men's side after finishing the event in 2:06:17 last year. On the women's side, Kenyan runner Hellen Obiri is going for a historic victory. Obiri has won the last two Boston Marathons. If she takes home the win in 2025, it would mark the fifth time a woman has won the event in three consecutive years. Fatuma Roba is the last woman to accomplish that feat, winning the Boston Marathon from 1997-99. The Boston Athletic Association maintains a full list of winners at the event, dating back to 1897, the first year the Boston Marathon was held. Weather shouldn't be a factor during the 2025 Boston Marathon. It's expected to be partly cloudy in Boston on Monday, with a high of 57 degrees during the day. There's a chance of rain later that evening, but it isn't expected to impact the race. Local coverage will begin at 4 a.m. ET on WCVB Channel 5 (ABC) in Boston. Live streaming is available through the Very Local app, which is only available in select cities. Local ABC channels will also carry the event in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. National coverage will take place on ESPN2. The network will begin covering the 2025 Boston Marathon at 9 a.m. ET. Coverage on ESPN2 will run until 12:30 p.m. ET.

2025 Boston Marathon: Sharon Lokedi Sets A New Record; John Korir Creates Historic Legacy

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - APRIL 21: Sharon Lokedi of Kenya crosses the finish line to win the 129th ... More Boston Marathon Women's division on April 21, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by) On Monday, Sharon Lokedi won the 2025 Boston Marathon with a new record. The 31-year-old won the world's oldest annual marathon in 2:17:22, breaking the course record. Lokedi bested the previous record of 2:19:59 set by Ethiopia's Buzunesh Deba in 2014. With this time, the Kenyan managed to surpass the defending champion Hellen Obiri (2:17:41) by 19 seconds. Lokedi, who started the race in the middle of the lead pack, surged in the last 1000 meters to surpass Obiri and deny her from completing a historic three-peat. Yalemzerf Yehualaw of Ethiopia placed third in 2:18:06. The race was certainly one of the closest in history, as all three winners managed to surpass the decade-long previous record. "It feels so good. It was tough, and I toughed it out." Lokedi stated in the post-race interview. Over the past few years, Obiri, a two-time Olympic silver medalist in 5,000 meters, and Sharon Lokedi, last year's Boston Marathon runner-up, have developed into a duo that has left the spectators on tiptoes until the end of the race. At the 2024 Boston Marathon, Obiri claimed her second consecutive title, leaving Lokedi behind by eight seconds. The two also faced each other at the New York Marathon in 2023, where the defending champion Lokedi placed third while Oberi claimed the gold. (Photo by) Notably, the men's race was also claimed by a Kenyan runner, John Korir, placing first in 2:04:45. Korir, who took a fall in the beginning of the race, surged at mile 19 to 'become the fastest in the family.' The 28-year-old followed in the footsteps of his older brother Wesley, who won the event in 2012 and became the first sibling duo in history to win the Boston Marathon. Korir, who posted the second-fastest time in men's race history at the 129th Boston Marathon, was also almost eight minutes faster than Wesley, who notably claimed the title on one of city's hottest marathon days, peaking at 89 degrees. 'My brother Wesley, who won here in 2012, has always encouraged me to work hard, saying one day I will make it. I'm happy it has come to pass today," he stated Korir was followed by Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania, finishing second in 2:05:04. 28-year-old Conner Mantz was the top finisher for the U.S. placing fourth in 2:05:08. Mantz, who finished 11th in 2023, turned in the best performnce by an American runner at the Boston Marathon since 2018.

Des Linden gives Boston Marathon a surprise — and a fond farewell worthy of a ‘shoey'

BOSTON — Des Linden finished 17th among the women Monday afternoon in the 2025 Boston Marathon, crossing the finish line in 2:26:19. But it was early Monday morning, when many people were just getting out of bed, that Linden delivered some news that would soon have everyone buzzing from Hopkinton to Copley Square. Advertisement In keeping with a longstanding Boston Marathon tradition, which is that you just never know when there's going to be a big surprise, Linden's surprise arrived with the morning paper. Literally. As a means of announcing she plans to step away from professional marathoning, Linden, 41, took out a full-page color ad that ran in the Monday edition of the Boston Globe. It's important to note that Desiree Nicole Davila — married name: Linden — grew up in California. She's not some zany Boston sports fan whose teenage bedroom was festooned with posters of Cam Neely and Nomar Garciaparra. She probably knows next to nothing about Boston's tricky traffic rotaries, and even less about its trickier politics. What Linden does know, and she's known it for years, is that anyone who does the Boston Marathon is forever changed. Whether you run it to win it or run it to finish it, the Boston Marathon pulls you in and never lets go. It's true for the qualified runners, and it's true for the charity runners. (Or as longtime marathoner and trainer Susan Hurley calls them, 'the overqualified.') In 2011, the then-Desiree Davila placed second in the women's division, just two seconds behind Caroline Kilel of Kenya. In 2018, with freezing rain pelting the runners from start to finish, Linden ran a race within the race as she mulled dropping out. Instead, she made her move at the base of Heartbreak Hill and won the women's division in 2:39:59 — better than four minutes ahead of fellow American Sarah Sellers — to become the first U.S. women's runner to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. And so as Monday dawned, readers of the Boston Globe found Linden's announcement on page C3 of the Sports section: 'Dear Boston: I made my debut at 26.2 on your roads in 2007 and fell in love — with the distance and with the Boston Marathon. Four years later, we were in it together as you lifted me up through the Newton Hills, carried me as I turned Right on Hereford and Left on Boylston, and brought me with two heartbreaking seconds of victory.' Advertisement Linden then fast forwards to 2018. 'But you never gave up on me, inviting me to keep showing up. Hell, you embraced the fight, because Boston knows grit. The victory in 2018 wasn't just mine, it was ours.' Meeting with the media Monday afternoon after her 17th-place finish, Linden revealed the fine print of her retirement announcement. 'This is not retirement, capital R retirement,' Linden said. 'It's just the end of professional marathoning. This obviously is where all my focus has been, particularly at this race.' Later, after the news conference, Linden was asked about the method she chose to announce she's stepping away from professional marathoning. 'I don't know how many people read print, but it seemed like the thing to do,' Linden said. Print lives! The news quickly became the big pre-marathon talker, even if, OK, Linden helped things along by posting a screen grab of the ad on Instagram. What's noteworthy is less the mode of dissemination and more about the message. It's not just that she won Boston in 2018, or that she nearly won it in 2011. It's the 'USA! USA! USA!' chant she heard as she raced after Kilel in her desperate pursuit of victory. In 2018, it was the impromptu afterparty at the old Red Lantern in the Back Bay. She drank champagne out of a shoe that night. 'A Brooks casual street shoe,' Linden once told me. 'My own.' These are things not quickly forgotten. Certainly not by Linden. She remembers the shoe from which she drank champagne. Linden was asked if she had any waves of nostalgia during Monday's marathon run. She answered yes, sort of, but her responses suggested that even memories of the good old days can be used to gain an edge. Such as when she was asked about taking over the 2018 race at the front door to Heartbreak Hill. 'I thought about that a little bit,' she said. 'There were little points along the way, but that's more from a strategic perspective, where it's like this is a good place to regroup. Like, you can lean into this hill. I remember making a right-hand turn at the fire station and looking back and, oh, I really broke this thing open.' If this was Linden's last at-bat as a marathoner, she didn't go out with a home run the way Ted Williams did on that cool, gray afternoon at Fenway Park on Sept. 28, 1960, when he socked a pitch from Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Fisher into the Boston bullpen. But then, Teddy Ballgame didn't doff his cap that day. Des Linden spent pretty much all of Monday doffing her cap, literally and figuratively. Advertisement Linden has plenty of friends and family in town. Plans for Monday night in her beloved Boston? 'I haven't thought that far ahead,' Linden said. 'But I can see a shoey happening.'

Boston Marathon 2025 results: John Korir follows in brother's footsteps, Sharon Lokedi breaks record to win event

John Korir won the event Monday with a time of 2:04:45. Korir, a runner from Kenya, hung with the pack throughout most of the race, but a late surge pushed him way ahead of the other runners down the stretch. Tanzanian runner Alphonce Felix Simbu and Kenyan runner Cyprian Kotut finished tied for second with a time of 2:05:04. American Conner Mantz turned in his best performance at the Boston Marathon, finishing fourth with a time of 2:05:08. With the win, Korir joins his brother Wesley as sibling winners of the Boston Marathon. Wesley Korir won the event in 2012 with a time of 2:12:40. Advertisement John came into the Boston Marathon with a lot of momentum. He won the 2024 Chicago Marathon with a blazing time of 2:02:44. In doing so, John became the first man to win both events since Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot pulled off the feat, winning the 2006 Chicago Marathon and the 2007 Boston Marathon. Prior to Monday's win, John performed well at the Boston Marathon. In his two other appearances in the event, he finished fourth and ninth. Ahead of the 2025 Boston Marathon, John said he received advice from Wesley on how to win the event, per the Ravalli Republic. "He knows the course well. He knows where to make a move and also to relax the legs," said the younger Korir. "So that's been a good help to me in training. I think it's good." Before the race, John pledged his 2025 Boston Marathon winnings to Transcend Talent Academy, a middle school in Kenya. Last year's winner, Sisay Lemma, got out to a good start, but eventually pulled out of the race. Lemma reportedly pulled to the side around the 17th mile to stretch and did not return to action. The Ethiopian runner won last year's Boston Marathon with a time of 2:06:17. Sharon Lokedi of Kenya crosses the finish line to win the 129th Boston Marathon Women's division on April 21, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by) (Maddie Meyer via Getty Images) Sharon Lokedi wins 2025 Boston Marathon in record fashion It was tense down the stretch, but Sharon Lokedi defeated Hellen Obiri to win the professional women's portion of the 2025 Boston Marathon in record fashion. Advertisement Lokedi won the event with a time of 2:17:20, shattering the previous course record of 2:19:59. Obiri finished second with a time of 2:17:41 and Yalemzerf Yehualaw took third with a time of 2:18:06. As the women's event came down to the wire, three women pulled away from the pack — Obiri, Lokedi and Yehualaw. Those three were neck and neck in the final miles of the race. Just before the final stretch, Beriso fell behind, making it a two-woman race. Obiri and Lokedi were separated by just inches before Lokedi opened up a lead with 1,000 meters left. That was enough for Lokedi to come out victorious. It was quite the win for the Kenyan runner, not only setting a new course record, but preventing Obiri from securing a three-peat. Advertisement Obiri, a Kenyan runner, came into the event after winning the Boston Marathon in both 2023 and 2024. Lokedi finished in second in 2024, just behind Obiri. With a win, Obiri would have been one of five women to win the event in three consecutive years. Obiri fought hard until the very last moment, but it was Lokedi who came out on top in 2025. It marks the second career win in a major marathon for Lokedi, who also won the New York City Marathon in 2022.
