Special Teams Issues Sink Abbotsford Canucks In 5-2 Game 3 Loss To The Texas Stars

The Abbotsford Canucks dropped Game 3 of their Western Conference Final, falling 5-2 to the Texas Stars. Christian Wolanin and Linus Karlsson scored the goals, while Artūrs Šilovs stopped 31 of the 36 shots he faced. Despite the loss, Abbotsford still has a series lead and will head into Game 4 up 2-1. Abbotsford went two for five on the power play, while the Stars finished two for four with two shorthanded goals. Ultimately, the Game 3 special teams performance was shocking, as not only had the Canucks penalty kill been unbeatable this post-season, but they had only allowed one shorthanded goal during the entire regular season and playoffs leading up to Game 3. Abbotsford also struggled to generate shots from in tight throughout the game. According to the shot chat, the Canucks only five of Abbotsford's 24 shots came below the faceoff dot. If the Canucks are going to win this series, they need to find a way to crash Remi Poirier's crease more often and create scoring chances from high-danger areas. Advertisement Abbotsford's overall defensive performance was also problematic, as Texas was able to record 36 shots on net. The Stars were able to generate chances from distance, as well as in tight, as they controlled the majority of puck possession in this game. Ulitmatley, the Canucks did not look like themselves as they could not find a way to create any form of sustained momentum in Game 3. Overall, this may have been Abbotsford's most disappointing performance of the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs. They were outplayed from start to finish, and as mentioned, their special teams had a night to forget. While the Canucks are still up in the series, they cannot afford to put forth a similar effort when they hit the ice in Game 4 on Wednesday. 2025 Calder Cup Conference Final Preview: 2) Abbotsford Canucks Versus 5) Texas Stars

The Abbotsford Canucks (8–4–0) keep on making franchise history. They won their five-game Division Final series against the Colorado Eagles, placing them in the final four of the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs. To win the Western Conference, they'll need to defeat the Texas Stars (6–2–0) in a best-of-seven that starts on Thursday. As well, Matěj Blümel, Kyle Capobianco, and Curtis McKenzie round out the team's top-six in scoring. After this, the Stars face a significant drop-off in scoring, as no other player on the team has more than four points. This could make cracking Artūrs Šilovs, arguably the top goalie of the postseason, difficult for Texas. With that being said, Texas has the second-highest goals-for of all remaining teams, trailing the AHL Canucks by only five despite playing in four less games. Something Abbotsford will want to keep an eye out for during this series is their work on special teams. The AHL Canucks' penalty kill has been discussed at length, as they are currently operating at a stellar 97.1% and previously killed 30 straight. Texas currently has the second-highest power play percentage of the final four playoff teams with a rate of 23.1%. On the flip side, the Stars have a penalty killing efficiency of 85.7%, which only barely falls in the top-half of all the teams who participated in the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs. While Abbotsford's power play scored in their 5–0 win against the Eagles on Monday, prior to that, they hadn't scored in their past five opportunities. It will be difficult for them to nab more power plays, as Texas is the least-penalized team remaining in the playoffs with 61 PIMs and 21 times being shorthanded. 3 Takeaways From The Abbotsford Canucks First Two Games Of The 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs

After two games, the Abbotsford Canucks find themselves tied in their first-round series of the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs. After Abbotsford took the first game, the Tucson Roadrunners picked up a win in Game 2, forcing a series-deciding Game 3 on Saturday night. Here are three takeaways from the series so far. Latest From THN's Vancouver Canucks Site: What Went Wrong For The 2024-25 Vancouver Canucks: Problems In Overtime Abbotsford Canucks 4–1 Loss To Tucson Roadrunners In Game 2 Tells A Tale Of Two Special Teams 3 Canucks Prospects Advance To The 2025 CHL Conference Finals Despite the Canucks holding a 18.2% power play, they have struggled with the man advantage so far in the post-season. Abbotsford has just two goals on 11 opportunities, and gave up their first shorthanded goal of the year in Game 1. Why they are operating at around the same percentage they did during the regular season, the inability to make the Roadrunners pay for taking penalties could play a massive factor in Game 3. For the Canucks to advance, they need better performances from their leading goal-scorers this season. Jonathan Lekkerimäki, who had 19 goals, has yet to find the scoresheet, while Danila Klimovich, who led the team with 25, has yet to record a shot on goal. If these two can start generating scoring chances, it will go a long way in helping Abbotsford advance to the next round. Overall, the Canucks have done a good job of getting pucks on net in this series. That being said, Abbotsford has a shooting percentage of 8.1%, which ranks sixth out of ten teams in the AHL Playoffs. While it is a positive that they are getting shots on goal, the Canucks need to find a way to get more traffic and make Tucson's goaltender move more frequently in order to find success. Abbotsford wraps up its three-game first-round series with the Roadrunners on Saturday night. The winner will advance to the second round, while the loser will see their season come to an end. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm PT from the Abbotsford Centre.
