Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors
Ole Miss' Chris Malloy, Stanford's Anne Walker win Golfweek's 2025 Coach of the Year honors The 2024-25 college golf season is complete, which means it's time for postseason awards. There was a monumental upset on the women's side while one of college golf's best programs of all-time took home the trophy at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, where the championships were contested for a second time with three more years to come. However, when it comes to the Coach of the Year conversation, there are two who stood out among the rest, and they've been selected as the Golfweek 2025 Coaches of the Year. Golfweek selects men's and women's All-America teams and honorable mention selections, as well as Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year. All-America selections were released Wednesday, and Player of the Year honorees will be announced Friday. Here's a look at Golfweek's 2025 Coaches of the Year and a look at past winners: Golfweek 2025 Men's College Golf Coach of the Year: Chris Malloy, Ole Miss Malloy guided the Rebels to their best season in school history. Ranked 12th in the preseason, Ole Miss made match play at NCAAs for the first time in school history and fell 3-2 in extra holes against Oklahoma State in the semis, pushign the eventual national champions to the brink. Malloy also coached the individual national medalist, junior, Michael La Sasso, and helped Ole Miss win three times this season and finished fourth in the NCAA golf rankings. Golfweek 2025 Women's College Golf Coach of the Year: Anne Walker, Stanford Stanford just completed arguably the greatest season in women's college golf history (that's a discussion for another time), and it walks away without winning the national title or its conference crown. Stanford played nine stroke play events and won every single won, falling only in match play against Northwestern in the national championship match and to Wake Forest in the semis of ACCs. Walker constructed a roster that featured contributions from numerous players, with four players collecting individual wins this season. Cleveland Cavaliers Kenny Atkinson Wins 2025 NBA Coach of the Year
Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE Source: Mike Mulholland / Getty The NBA named Kenny Atkinson the 2025 Coach of the Year after a standout season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Atkinson helped lead the Cavs to a 51–31 record, landing the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. The team made a strong postseason run, marking one of its best seasons in years. This is Atkinson's first Coach of the Year honor. He took over after J.B. Bickerstaff was fired last summer. Atkinson quickly earned respect for his defense-first system and ability to develop young talent. Under his leadership, players like Evan Mobley and Darius Garland took big leaps. The Cavs also ranked top-five in defensive efficiency. Atkinson beat out Oklahoma City's Mark Daigneault and Minnesota's Chris Finch for the award. Both coaches led teams with strong regular-season records. The Cavaliers are currently down 1-0 to the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the NBA Playoffs. The Cavs' future looks bright with Atkinson at the helm. Fans are already looking ahead to next season with high expectations. Report: Rockets assistant Royal Ivey could soon receive NBA head coaching interest
The Houston Rockets (52-30, No. 2 in the Western Conference standings) have overachieved all expectations in the 2024-25 NBA season, and head coach Ime Udoka is getting consideration for Coach of the Year honors. Those accomplishments, of course, also speak well to the talented coaching staff on Udoka's bench. That includes Rockets assistant Royal Ivey, a former NBA player who coached South Sudan to its first-ever Olympic berth and victory last offseason. Advertisement Thus, it shouldn't come as a surprise if Ivey gets a look at other head coaching vacancies around the NBA. Per longtime league insider Chris Haynes, Ivey could potentially receive an interview with the Phoenix Suns, who recently opted to move on from Mike Budenholzer. From Haynes' YouTube channel (Haynes Briefs): Sources relayed to me that these are a list of coaching candidates that are going to be looked at by the Phoenix Suns. Mike Brown, former head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Willie Green, current Pelicans head coach. We're going to see, is Willie going to stay there in New Orleans? I mean, New Orleans just parted ways with its president of basketball operations, David Griffin. If Willie is going to be outed, Phoenix is definitely going to take a look. Willie (previously) spent some time in Phoenix. Miami assistant Chris Quinn, Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant. Mavericks assistants Sean Sweeney and Jared Dudley. Dudley played in Phoenix, and has strong ties to the Phoenix area. Rockets assistant Royal Ivey, and current Suns assistant David Fizdale. And former Suns assistant and current BYU head coach Kevin Young. Those are some names that I was told that the team will look into and evaluate, and (then) choose who they're going to bring in for interviews. These are largely guys who played in the NBA before, or are young, up-and-coming guys. I think a lot of teams feel like they need a voice that's not too far removed from playing, or a young up-and-coming assistant coach who has the ear of the players. Look at the Lakers (and JJ Redick). If you look at the issues with Bud and the players on this Suns team, that lack of communication was key, so bringing in somebody who has the ear of the players and can communicate and relay a message properly, and be received in the right way… that's going to be very important. Time will tell as to whether Ivey ultimately lands an interview with the Suns or other teams, but it's positive news for his career that he's in the conversation, no matter what. And it also shows that Houston's strong performance this season is drawing attention around the league. In second year with Houston, Ime Udoka could be in NBA's 2025 Coach of the Year finalists
In second year with Houston, Ime Udoka could be in NBA's 2025 Coach of the Year finalists Cleveland's Kenny Atkinson is the NBA's 2025 Coach of the Year frontrunner, but Houston's Ime Udoka could certainly be among the three finalists. The Houston Rockets were 41-41 last season and No. 11 in the Western Conference standings. In 2024-25, they will finish with between 52 and 54 wins while securing the No. 2 seed. That type of growth often leads to individual accolades in the NBA's annual awards voting, and second-year guard/forward Amen Thompson is clearly under consideration for All-Defensive First Team and even Defensive Player of the Year honors. But based on the collective growth for the team as a whole, head coach Ime Udoka appears to be a viable option for Coach of the Year, as well. In a recent appearance on ESPN's First Take, former NBA Carlos Boozer made the argument for Udoka's candidacy: Ime Udoka is the Coach of the Year. Nobody's talking about that. Everybody wants to talk about Cleveland. He (Kenny Atkinson) was gifted a team that already had All-Stars on it. The Houston Rockets started from scratch, and they're the second seed. They play defense (rated No. 4 among the NBA's 30 teams). Boozer also pointed to J.B. Bickerstaff, who has helped lift the Detroit Pistons from a 14-68, last-place finish last season to a 44-36 record (No. 6 in the East) this season, as a strong candidate. Atkinson, who has taken the Cavaliers from 48-34 in 2023-24 to 63 wins and counting this season (as the No. 1 seed in the East), remains the betting favorite. Like Udoka and the Rockets, Cleveland didn't have significant roster turnover in the preceding offseason, which makes the ensuing growth a clear reflection of coaching and development. With the Cavs atop the East and Houston second in the West, that's likely enough to make Atkinson the winner. But Udoka has clearly shown enough to where he should have a great chance to be one of three finalists for the award, likely alongside Atkinson and Bickerstaff. The league's annual awards will be voted on by a diverse media panel shortly after Sunday's conclusion of the 2024-25 regular season. Finalists will be named in the following days, with actual winners to be announced during the 2025 NBA playoffs. More: With Lakers' loss, Rockets clinch No. 2 spot in 2025 West playoff field
