South Africa Coach Pays Tribute To Fans After WTC Final Win: "They Are The Reason..."
A day after South Africa won the 2025 ICC World Test Championship, head coach Shukri Conrad said the sport is deeply valued by all members of the winning team, as well as by the people of the rainbow nation. At Lord's on Saturday, South Africa beat the defending champions Australia by five wickets to win the WTC mace and end a 27-year knockout losing streak. Opener Aiden Markram made a magnificent 136 and steered South Africa to victory in the Ultimate Test by lunch on day four by chasing 282 in 83.4 overs. Notably, two months ago, Conrad lost his father Sedick, who himself was a first-class cricketer. 'I guess I do play that father figure role, because most of these guys are close in age to my kids. They keep me young, because they give me headaches. People like Dane Paterson… they are the reason I don't have any hair anymore.' 'If he is quiet for too long, you know he is up to no good. And some of the music they play…my goodness! But they are the reason we do this and keep coaching. Cricket means so much to all of us, and to the people of this country,' said Conrad in a Cricket South Africa (CSA) statement on Sunday. Veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj was left in tears of joy after achieving WTC glory, and said a dream he saw had come true at Lord's just before Father's Day came on Sunday. 'This is even more special, because my family is here with me. It is my first one as a father, and my dream was to have my daughter with me, playing on the outfield at Lord's, with a winner's medal on her,' an emotional Maharaj added. One of the memorable and viral images from SA's WTC win was of captain Temba Bavuma having the WTC mace in one hand, and his son holding the other hand. 'Fatherhood has definitely changed me as a person. Even the team says it has made me a better man. It is special and gives you someone else to play for,' he concluded.

SA Coach On WTC Win: 'Cricket Means So Much To Us And People Of The Country'
Last Updated: South Africa head coach Conrad highlighted cricket's significance after wining the 2025 ICC World Test Championship. One day after South Africa secured the 2025 ICC World Test Championship, head coach Shukri Conrad emphasised the sport's profound importance to both the victorious team and the people of South Africa. On Saturday at Lord's, South Africa defeated defending champions Australia by five wickets, claiming the WTC mace and ending a 27-year drought in knockout matches. Opener Aiden Markram's outstanding 136 guided South Africa to victory in the Ultimate Test, chasing down 282 in 83.4 overs before lunch on day four. Poignantly, Conrad's father, Sedick, a former first-class cricketer, passed away two months ago. 'I suppose I do play a father figure role since most of these players are around the same age as my children. They keep me young by giving me headaches. People like Dane Paterson… they are the reason I don't have any hair anymore," Conrad reflected. 'If he stays quiet for too long, you know he's up to no good. And some of the music they play… my goodness! But they are the reason we do this and continue coaching. Cricket means so much to all of us and to the people of this country," Conrad stated in a Cricket South Africa (CSA) release on Sunday. Veteran left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj expressed overwhelming joy after securing the WTC title, revealing the fulfilment of a long-held dream at Lord's just before Father's Day on Sunday. 'This is even more special because my family is here with me. It's my first Father's Day, and my dream was to have my daughter with me, playing on the outfield at Lord's, with a winner's medal around her neck," an emotional Maharaj added. One of the most memorable and widely shared images from South Africa's WTC victory captured captain Temba Bavuma holding the WTC mace with his son at his side. 'Fatherhood has definitely changed me as a person. Even the team says it has made me a better man. It is special and gives you someone else to play for," he concluded. South African President Celebrates WTC Win: 'Proud Of Captain Temba Bavuma'
Last Updated: South Africa ended their 27-year knockout curse by defeating Australia in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship as Cyril Ramaphosa praised Captain Temba Bavuma and the team. After years of disappointment in knockout games of major tournaments, South Africa finally broke their 27-year knockout curse by defeating Australia by five wickets to win the 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final on the fourth day at Lord's on Saturday. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took to social media to celebrate his country's WTC victory. 'Congratulations to the Proteas the ICC Test Champions . We are proud of Captain Temba Bavuma for leading from the front," Cyril Ramaphosa posted on X. 'A victory for you and for the nation," he added. South Africa ended day three at 213/2, chasing 282, and were on the brink of victory. Given their history of collapsing under pressure, especially against serial championship winners Australia, there was a mix of caution and optimism. Markram, who was 102 not out at the end of day three, continued his aggressive play to lead South Africa to victory with a brilliant 136. The Proteas completed the chase in 83.4 overs, securing their eighth consecutive win in the format. Markram, who had led South Africa to victory in the 2014 U19 Men's Cricket World Cup, once again played a pivotal role in securing a major senior championship win, their first since the 1998 ICC Knockout, known as the Champions Trophy. Resuming at 213/2, South Africa faced an early setback when Temba Bavuma edged a back-of-the-length delivery from Cummins to the keeper, falling for 66 off 134 balls. With Nathan Lyon getting some turn, South Africa had to navigate nervy moments as Australia maintained pressure and restricted free runs. Markram eased the tension by hitting Cummins for a boundary, followed by a pull through mid-wicket. However, Australia struck again when Mitchell Starc bowled Tristan Stubbs, removing the leg-stump bail. Australia's desperation was evident when they wasted their third review of the innings. Markram and David Bedingham remained calm and steadily rotated the strike, inching closer to the target. The deficit fell below 20 when Bedingham played a smooth on-drive off Cummins, energising the Proteas supporters. The crowd erupted when Markram whipped Hazlewood through mid-wicket for four, followed by three runs in the same area on the next ball. Although Markram was dismissed for 136 by Hazlewood, Kyle Verreynne secured the win by carving Starc through cover-point, sparking joyous celebrations among players, supporters, family members, and former players both at Lord's and back in South Africa. Breaking: Proteas beat Australia to win the WTC final
The Proteas managed to hold their nerve to beat Australia to win the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) on Saturday at Lord's, England. The win sees South Africa win their first ICC trophy since 1998. Having gone into the final as underdogs, the Proteas bowled well to dismiss the Aussies for 212 in the first innings and again 207 in their second. Despite their disappointing 138 in the first innings, Temba Bavuma's men scored 282 to claim the famous win over Australia. A second innings 147 partnership between Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma was critical in the Proteas claiming their first trophy in 27 years. Needed 282 runs to win, the Proteas lost an early wicket of Ryan Rickelton but Wiaan Mulder's positive 27 indicated that Day 3 in Lord's was always going to favour the batting side. Captain Temba Bavuma was dropped by Steven Smith early in his innings and made the most of his second life by scoring 66 despite suffering from a hamstring injury. On Day 4 of the WTC final, the Proteas needed just 69 runs to win with eight wickets in hand. Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs and Markram were the wickets to fall but David Bedingham stood tall to guide the team to victory with an unbeaten 20.
