Relay team aims to break Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon record set in 2007
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is just a few days away. Runners are getting their final training in including those running the four person relay. Since 2007, a course record of 2:55:00 has stood for the marathon relay. Lauren Roth, Katie Baksa, Eliza Dickenson and Liz Whelply are hoping to break that record during this year's race. Knoxville's relay is not spilt into equal lengths; first leg is 6.8 miles, the second is 6.1, third leg is 7.0 miles, and the final leg is 6.3 miles. Running helps Morristown man shed 150 pounds as he aims to finish second marathon 'I think the first goal is to have fun,' said Roth. Dickenson added, 'And to wear Bound. We are going to be representing team Bound, so cheering on our friend here. If we can run hard, piece it together, it would be nice.' 'We've been texting each other over the last month or so, saying 'Ok, are you getting your workouts in are we ready?' We know what pace we need to hit to get the course record but it's going to be hard,' said Baksa. The team will be wearing matching running sets made by Baksa's company Bound. 'That's one of my favorite things about my running friends and the running community as a whole. It's just a very positive, supportive group of people,' Dickenson said. 'It kind of makes you believe in yourself and makes you want to go after crazy goals or try crazy things and start stuff like a running apparel company, which is so amazing. Being able to support her in this way is exciting and fun.' Where to cheer on runners during the 2025 Knoxville Marathon The group has previously run 100 mile races in relay form, most recently in the Florida keys. They said this marathon course will be a lot easier for them. 'Oh yeah, that was also in Key West, very hot. This is just one leg versus like eight or nine,' they said. Come race day you'll be able to tell them apart from the rest of the runners. The group likes to wear matching colors and outfits. 'We like to match to, so that's kind of fun. We're going to get our nails done, all the same color, we'll wear all the same colors,' Dickenson explained. 'We like to say, 'look fast, feel fast, be fast,' our nails and our outfit will help.' What's the fastest Knoxville Marathon time ever recorded? The record pace is right around a 6:33 mile. The group hoping they can put it all together and take home a new record. Running helps Morristown man shed 150 pounds as he aims to finish second marathon
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — When the gun sounds on April 6, thousands of marathon goers will begin their quest to complete the 26.2-mile course that makes up the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. For the men and women competing, each one brings with them a story of how they got to this point. This includes Morristown runner Wil Nelson. The 48-year-old will be competing in his second consecutive Knoxville Marathon. A huge accomplishment, considering just five years ago, he could barely run a mile. Making sure your heart is healthy for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon 'I was 325 pounds at my biggest,' Nelson told 6 News. 'I was having breathing problems. I had sleep apnea at that point. And I knew that my life would be shortened if I didn't do something.' That's when Nelson says he knew he had to change his mindset. Part of that change, according to his trainer, was getting off the couch and running. A task that at first was easier said than done. 'You know, when I got to a 45-minute mile, I thought I had really arrived. I had really done something. And then a 30-minute mile I was on cloud nine,' says Nelson. But that was in 2020. Now, five years later, Nelson is running and competing in everything. From 5K's, half and full marathons, trail races and Ultra competitions, there appears to be nothing this now 168-pound sportsman can't conquer. 'You hit a mental block, a mental wall, and you have to find your own way to get past that and push past that to achieve what you want to achieve and go as far as you want to go,' said Nelson. 'It's a discipline. You really have to be self-disciplined to be a runner or to maintain anything. It takes discipline.' Where to cheer on runners during the 2025 Knoxville Marathon It's that discipline that has led Nelson to take part in his second Knoxville marathon this year. An event he admits he wasn't quite ready for a year ago. 'I really didn't prepare a whole lot for it,' Nelson confesses. 'I got to mile 20, which was right around Summit Hill, and I thought I may have made a mistake. I wanted to completely stop at that point.' To his credit, he didn't stop. He completed his first road marathon in a time of just over four hours and 33 minutes. 'It was about the experience last year. This year, we'll take it a little more seriously. I'm still going to have fun and enjoy it, but I have a personal goal in mind going into it, and so as long as I achieve that goal, I will feel accomplished.' How to watch the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon A big statement coming from a man who has already accomplished a lot in a relatively short amount of time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. How experienced marathon runners help others keep pace
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Some marathon runners are looking to beat their personal record or qualify for another marathon, while others are purposefully keeping a certain pace. Although each runner may have a different goal, a team of runners helps set the pace for runners to make it happen at the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. These runners are called 'pacers.' They sign up to complete the marathon in a specific time to help other runners keep their pace. Terry Higgins has served as a pacer at the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon a dozen times. 'A pacer is someone who has agreed to run the marathon at a particular pace so that other runners around them will know, 'hey, I'm going to finish this race at a particular time,'' he explained. Where to cheer on runners during the 2025 Knoxville Marathon Being a pacer isn't for the weak. These runners must have marathon experience. 'I have been running for over 25 years now, I have been pacing for about 13 years now, I've run the Knoxville Marathon about… I know I've paced at least 12 of them and then I've run a couple more,' Higgins said. Pacers wear singlets to identify them and carry flags that show their finishing time. Aside from helping runners with their time, pacers also offer support along the course. 'During the race they will also provide helpful hints, support, strategy, because there's just sometimes where you're like, 'Hey, how do I approach this hill?' for example. Knoxville has a few hills, so the pacer's there to help runners out during the course,' Higgins said. LIST: Things to do during Knoxville Marathon weekend Some pacers for the Knoxville Marathon come from around the country. Higgins said the course keeps them coming back. 'This marathon is, let's just face it, it's probably the best marathon of the spring season. Out of all the marathons there are, Knoxville by far is a great venue, we have great scenery, we have a great course,' Higgins said. The pacers are for both half-marathoners and marathoners, as the two courses share 12.8 miles. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
