Rickie Fowler earns spot in 2025 Open Championship after first top-10 of season at Memorial

Rickie Fowler earns spot in 2025 Open Championship after first top-10 of season at Memorial Rickie Fowler had his best finish of the year Sunday at the Memorial Tournament, and it came with major benefits. Fowler tied for seventh at the 2025 Memorial Tournament, his first top-10 finish of 2025, and it came at a good time. Fowler earned a spot in the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush thanks to his finish, as the highest finisher in the Memorial field not otherwise exempt into the final major championship of the year earned a spot in next month's battle for the Claret Jug. "We're heading the right way," Fowler said. "This week still could have been a lot better, but definite positive is going over to Portrush. That's one I've wanted on the schedule. I had a great time when we were there the last and had a decent showing as well. So links golf's my favorite, Portrush is a great spot, so excited for that opportunity." Fowler tied with Brandt Snedeker, finishing at 1-under 287 for the week, but Fowler earned the spot at Royal Portrush because he was ranked higher in the Official World Golf Ranking coming into the week. Three more spots will be available next week at the RBC Canadian Open, the last event before the third major championship of the year, the U.S. Open. Fowler isn't in the field for the USGA's biggest championship, but he's one of the notables set to tee it up Monday in final qualifying, which is taking place at 10 sites across the country.

Record crowds expected for 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, R&A announces

Record crowds expected for 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, R&A announces Going to the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush? So are plenty of others. So many, in fact, the R&A announced Tuesday it will be the most-attended Open Championship, outside of the 2022 Open at St. Andrews, of all-time. The R&A says 278,000 fans will head to Northern Ireland for the 153rd Open Championship, set for July 17-20. There was "unprecedented demand" for tickets in the ballot, as there were more than one million ticket applications submitted. 'The Open is one of the world's great sporting events, and we will do everything we can to make this year's Championship at Royal Portrush an outstanding and memorable occasion for everyone involved from fans to players and the millions watching on TV and digital platforms worldwide," Mark Darbon, Chief Executive at The R&A, said in a release. 'The passion and enthusiasm for golf throughout the island of Ireland is world-renowned and is clearly reflected in the extraordinary demand among fans to be part of this historic occasion. We look forward to welcoming a record crowd to these spectacular links for a true celebration of golf and seeing who emerges from the 156-strong field to become Champion Golfer of the Year.' When Shane Lowry won at Royal Portrush in 2019, the course saw 237,750 fans over the course of the week. That number will be more than 40,000 higher this year. For the four practice rounds, there will be a record 89,000 spectators. The number in 2019 was 61K. The Open is also expected to be the largest sporting event in Northern Ireland's history, with an estimated economic impact of £213 million, or nearly $300 million. Last year, 258,174 fans attended at Royal Troon, the third-most all time, with the three highest attendance totals all coming in the past three years. Open Championship attendance records

Other LIV players in the field include Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Joaquin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith and Henrik Stenson. Ryan Peake, former biker gang member, earns spot in 2025 Open Championship

Ryan Peake, former biker gang member, earns spot in 2025 Open Championship Show Caption Hide Caption What exactly is speedgolf? This British team just won the World Cup Speedgolf combines running and golf. This British team just won the speedgolf World Cup in Japan. Ryan Peake's comeback story reached a new height Sunday. The 31-year-old Australian won the 2025 New Zealand Open on Sunday, earning a spot in the field at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. The lefty holed a 10-footer for par on the par-3 18th to win by one shot. What's even more impressive is the journey that led to Peake's incredible victory Sunday. Ten years ago when he was 21, Peake was a member of the Rebels, an Australian bike gang, and he was sent to prison for five years for assault. Growing up, Peake was a competitive amateur, playing alongside 2022 Open Championship winner Cameron Smith in Australia. While in prison, coach Ritchie Smith reached out and asked whether Peake wanted to play competitive golf again. Peake said yes, and now he's going to make his first Open Championship start. "I've just changed my life," Peake said after the win. "This is what I do. I want to be here and just play golf. The story is what it is but I'm just out here playing golf ... I always knew I could do it. It was just a matter of time of when I was going to do it." His criminal record still follows him to this day. He had visa issues entering New Zealand this week and didn't even get into the country until Tuesday evening. He will also have to get clearance to travel to Northern Ireland this July. He went bogey free over his final 55 holes, shooting 5-under 66 on Sunday to finish at 23 under for the week, earning his Asian Tour card in the process. This year, Peake earned his Australasian Tour card for the first time. Peake's comeback story is one of the best in golf, and he gets to write a new chapter in his story this summer. "Yeah, I'm pretty lost for words at the moment, (the win is) life-changing," Peake said. "It's one hell of a story, one hell of a moment."

Former No. 1 amateur wins Argentina Open to punch ticket to 2025 Open Championship

Former No. 1 amateur wins Argentina Open to punch ticket to 2025 Open Championship Justin Suh picked a good time to get his first win since 2022. The 27-year-old won the Korn Ferry Tour's 118 Visa Argentina Open on Sunday, running away from the field for a five-shot win at Jockey Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He did so in record fashion, breaking the 72-hole tournament scoring record with a 23-under 257 (the previous: record was 263, which Mason Andersen and Kris Ventura did last year), and the score tied for the sixth lowest 72-hole score in KFT history. Part of his week included a 60 in the third round. More importantly, Suh earned a spot in the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush with the win. "It feels great. From the start of the week we kind of knew it was going to be a hectic week," Suh said. "To stay patient through it all and come out with the score that I did, I'm extremely grateful that we got it in all four days. Just can't be happy enough to get the win, especially with The Open exemption on the line, there's a lot there riding on it. Overall just couldn't be happier." The third round finished Sunday morning because of storms, then Suh ran away for his second KFT title Sunday afternoon. His last win came at the KFT Championship in 2022. Now, the former No. 1 amateur will make his fifth start in a major come July. It'll be his first start at the Open. "A couple years ago when I was playing well on the PGA Tour, that was one of the majors I missed, so to get there through this exemption is really, really cool." Last year, Suh lost his PGA Tour card after making only 12 cuts in 29 starts. His win Sunday vaulted him to second in the KFT standings, a big boost to earning his way back to the PGA Tour next year. "I struggled with my game all last year, kind of went through a slump," Suh said. "Just kind of being on the other side of it now and to have worked on the things I've worked on with my coach and my team, just couldn't be more grateful to be in the position I'm in. Just to see the progress over the last four to five months has been really exciting."
