Bahrain Strengthens Global Parliamentary Diplomacy at Geneva Summit
Bahrain reaffirmed its growing commitment to global parliamentary diplomacy yesterday, as a high-level delegation from the Kingdom's legislative chambers joined the opening session of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva. Held under the theme 'Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace and Justice for All', the conference is being organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in close cooperation with the United Nations from July 29 to 31. The Bahraini delegation includes Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, who is heading the team, along with MP Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives, and Dr Bassam Ismail Al-Benhamad, member of the Shura Council's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence, and National Security. Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Ambassador Abdullah Abdulatif Abdullah, was also present at the inaugural session. Global Commitment Speakers at the opening ceremony included Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet to the UN Secretary-General, and IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong. The delegation's participation underscores Bahrain's firm commitment to engaging constructively with the international community through parliamentary channels, and reflects the maturity of its democratic development. Bahrain's presence at the forum also signals a broader diplomatic message: that parliamentary voices are key players in building peace, justice, and global cooperation. Peace Through Dialogue The upcoming sessions at the Geneva conference are set to address pressing global challenges, including youth and women's participation in parliaments during turbulent times, innovation for peacebuilding, and advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through new avenues of international cooperation. Other sessions will tackle the role of parliaments in shaping the digital future and defending the rights of people living in vulnerable situations, as part of inclusive action against discrimination. These discussions offer Bahrain's parliamentary bloc a platform to share its perspectives and extend its strategic engagement with legislative institutions worldwide.

Oman joins key African climate talks in Nairobi
NAIROBI: The Sultanate of Oman actively participated in the 20th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) held in Nairobi, Kenya, under the leadership of Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Oman's Environment Authority and President of the 7th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). Marking the 40th anniversary of AMCEN, the conference celebrated four decades of regional environmental progress in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, climate action and pollution control. Dr Abdullah praised AMCEN's historic achievements and its pivotal role in unifying Africa's environmental agenda and strengthening its global voice. During the event, Dr Abdullah emphasised the robust partnership between AMCEN and UNEA, highlighting cooperation aimed at achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa's Agenda 2063. He outlined future plans focusing on scientific policymaking, sustainable climate financing, AI-driven environmental monitoring and promoting inclusive green transformations. On the sidelines, Dr Abdullah engaged in high-level discussions with representatives from the Group of 77 and China, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, focusing on preparations for UNEA's seventh session and key environmental initiatives, including the global plastic pollution treaty. Oman engages with Africa, EU, G77 on environment
Muscat – Oman took part in the 20th African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) held in Nairobi from July 14 to 18. The delegation was led by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Environment Authority and President of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). Oman's participation was part of the preparatory plan as UNEA-7 president focusing on partnership with all stakeholders to ensure a successful session. This edition of AMCEN also marked the 40th anniversary of the conference, which was founded in 1985 and has contributed to progress in sustainable development, biodiversity protection, climate action and pollution control. In his address, Amri commended AMCEN and the African Union for their long-standing contributions to joint environmental action across the continent. He traced the conference's journey since its inception in Cairo and acknowledged its role in shaping a unified African environmental agenda and strengthening the continent's voice in global negotiations. He underlined the collaboration between AMCEN and UNEA as a model for regional-global partnerships, noting its significance in advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and Africa's Agenda 2063. Amri also outlined a vision to strengthen AMCEN's role through science-based policymaking, climate-sensitive financing, the use of digital and AI tools for environmental monitoring, and integrated approaches linking energy, minerals and the environment. He emphasised the need for inclusive and just green transitions in future development. On the sidelines of the conference, Amri held a series of meetings with key stakeholders. He met representatives of the Group of 77 and China to exchange views on the draft Ministerial Declaration and agenda topics. Discussions on similar themes were also held with EU representatives, including the European Commissioner for Environment and Circular Economy. Amri also met the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation in Nairobi, with talks focusing on UNEA-7 preparations. He held a separate meeting with Dr Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, to explore areas of collaboration with the Convention Secretariat. Additionally, Amri held consultations with several African environment ministers, reviewing the state of preparations for UNEA-7 and gathering inputs on the draft Ministerial Declaration.

UAE Showcases Global Model for Women Empowerment and Gender Equality at UN Forum
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has shared its pioneering approach to women empowerment and gender equality with the global community at the 2025 UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, held in New York. During the forum, the UAE delegation emphasized that empowering women and achieving gender balance are key pillars for inclusive and sustainable development, and vital to realizing the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The delegation presented the UAE's national framework that supports women and families as the foundation of society. They highlighted progressive laws and policies, including the Equal Pay Law and constitutional guarantees for gender equality, which have helped increase the participation of women in leadership and decision-making roles. Key achievements were shared, such as: Women making up 50% of the Federal National Council, 26% representation in the Cabinet, 46% of UAE STEM graduates being women, And 80% of the scientific leadership team of the Emirates Mars Mission being female. The delegation also spoke about the UAE's global initiatives to support women, including the Women in Peace and Security initiative by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. Bridging the Digital Gender Gap On the sidelines of the forum, the UAE hosted a high-level roundtable focused on 'Accelerating Innovation in Promoting Gender Equality in the Post-2030 Era.' The event brought together leaders and experts to discuss digital inclusion, the care economy, and women's leadership. Notable speakers included: H.E. Savannah Mazhya, Minister of ICT in Eswatini and Chair of the Global Council for SDG 5, H.E. Abdulla Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chair of the UAE National Committee on SDGs, Dr. Manal Taryam of Noor Dubai Foundation, Along with global policy experts and representatives from UN initiatives. H.E. Lootah stated, 'The UAE has built a unique global model rooted in decades of family-centered development. We believe community empowerment is both the foundation and the future of sustainable progress. We are proud to share our experience and success with the world to help drive inclusive development.' National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals convenes high-level meeting discussing UAE delegation's participation ahead of UN summit UAE – Dubai, July, 2025 – The United Arab Emirates delegation will participate in the upcoming 2025 United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) at UN Headquarters in New York. The delegation will showcase the UAE's comprehensive development model, reaffirming its commitment to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through multinational partnerships. The UAE delegation will focus on five priority goals: Goal 3 – ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages; Goal 5 – achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls; [SA1] Goal 8 – promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, productive employment, and decent opportunities for all; Goal 14 – conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources; and Goal 17 – strengthening global partnerships for sustainable development. The UAE delegation includes members from the UAE's National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Investment, The Government Experience Exchange Programme, Dubai Chamber of Commerce, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, and Noor Dubai Foundation (under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives), in coordination with the UAE's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, reaffirmed that UAE's participation reflects its international commitment to advancing the 2030 SDGs in innovation, technology, and smart governance. He emphasized the importance of expanding global partnerships in knowledge and development exchange. On the sidelines of HLPF, the UAE delegation is organizing a focused global retreat to discuss current challenges and explore future opportunities and a dedicated exhibition showcasing the UAE's progress and achievements in accelerating the implementation of the SDGs both locally and globally. In addition, the delegation will highlight initiatives in clean energy, digital transformation, education, and healthcare. As part of the preparations for the UAE's participation, the National Committee on the SDGs held an extensive meeting to assess the readiness of the delegation and review progress on the implementation of the SDGs. The meeting explored opportunities to expand international cooperation and sign new agreements during the Forum. Held under the 'Reinforcing sustainable, inclusive, and evidence-based solutions to deliver the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, leaving no one behind', the 2025 forum will run from 14 to 23 July 2025 with a total of 37 countries presenting their voluntary national reviews on the progress made toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to date.
