PM Modi calls for ‘immediate de-escalation' after the U.S. bombs Fordow, Natanz, Esfahan nuclear sites in Iran

Hours after the United States struck three prominent nuclear sites in Iran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (June 22, 2025) spoke with the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and called for 'immediate de-escalation'. The remark is the first from India which is a strategic partner of Iran and the two sides have been engaged closely to ensure safety of Indian citizens in Iran, as the west Asian conflict escalated on 13 June. 'Spoke with President of Iran Dr Pezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability,' said Prime Minister Modi in a message after speaking with President Pezeshkian. India and Iran maintain close communication on multiple bilateral and multilateral issues and New Delhi hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on 7 May 2025 for the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran. Officials here hinted that they are closely watching the developments in Iran where the United States struck the nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan. Early Sunday morning, President Donald Trump announced on a Truth Social post, 'We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan.' President Trump further said that a 'full payload' of bombs was dropped on the secretive Fordow uranium enrichment facility. The choice of the Iranian targets and the remarks from the U.S. political leadership drew concern about the fallout of radioactivity from the nuclear energy centres that were hit. This week, we held talks with the E3/EU when the U.S. decided to blow up that diplomacy. What conclusion would you draw? To Britain and the EU High Rep, it is Iran which must 'return' to the table. But how can Iran return to something it never left, let alone blew up?' said Mr. Aragchi in a message posted on his social media handles. In the above context, speaking to The Hindu, officials here indicated they are also studying the developments at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that was working with the Iranian government to ensure that the nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow and Esfahan operated as per safety protocols. India will participate in an emergency IAEA Board of Governors meeting on Monday, officials here said. According to the UN, the IAEA also monitored 'radiation measures' and evaluated emergency preparedness at these sites in Iran that has been a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). India is one of the 35-members of the Board of Governors of IAEA which supervises the nuclear domain worldwide. 'In view of the increasingly serious situation in terms of nuclear safety and security, the Board of Governors will meet in an extraordinary session tomorrow, which I will address,' IAEA's Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement calling for an emergency meeting of the Board of Governors on Monday (June 23, 2025). Continuing with the evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran, two more flights are on track to bring back nationals from Mashhad in Iran to New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (Terminal 3) on Sunday (June 22, 2025). India had been in contact with Iran, Israel and other countries including Armenia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt to evacuate citizens from the crisis spots under Operation Sindhu. Following escalation of the fight, both Iran and Israel had shut down their respective airspaces prompting Indians to leave through land borders with Armenia and the Turkmenistan. The Government of India began evacuating Sri Lankan and Nepali citizens starting Saturday onwards.

India-Pakistan Conflict: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held bilateral talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday. During the meet, EAM Jaishankar told his Iranian counterpart that India does not intend to escalate tension with Pakistan. However, Jaishankar cautioned that Delhi would not sit back if it was faced a military attack. 'It is not our intention to escalate the situation. However, if there are military attacks on us, there should be no doubt that it will be met with a very very firm response,' Jaishankar told Aragachi. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi is visiting India to co-chair the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran. It is the Iranian foreign minister's first visit to India since assuming office in August 2024. Jaishankar met Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is visiting New Delhi days after visiting Pakistan, as Tehran seeks to mediate between the nuclear-armed neighbours. 'You are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric terrorist attack on 22nd April in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This attack compelled us to respond on 7th May by striking at the cross-border terrorist infrastructure. Our response was targeted and measured', Jaishankar said in justifying Operation Sindoor. Araghchi, in a statement on his arrival in India, said that it was "natural that we want to reduce tensions" between India and Pakistan. "We hope that the parties will exercise restraint to avoid an escalation of tensions in the region," Araghchi said. The Iranian foreign minister landed in New Delhi around mid-night last night on a scheduled visit amid the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to retaliate after India launched Operation Sindoor on 9 targets in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir on Wednesday morning. The Operation was launched in retaliation to the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. Iranian FM Araghchi In India Day After Pakistan Visit, Operation Sindoor: Whats On Agenda?

Days after visiting Pakistan and meeting their Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, Iran's FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi has arrived in India on an official visit. His visit also comes a day after India carried out precision strikes on nine terror camps present in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. On his first visit to the country, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting. The high-level dialogue comes as both nations mark the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, welcomed the visiting dignitary and highlighted the significance of the occasion. In a post on X, Jaiswal said, "Warm welcome to FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi, as he arrives in New Delhi for the India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting. An opportunity to review and enhance bilateral cooperation on the 75th Anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty." The MEA said in a statement, "H.E. Dr. Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, will visit India from 07 - 08 May 2025 for co-chairing the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran. This is Dr. Araghchi's first visit to India since assuming office as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran in August 2024. The Joint Commission Meeting, being held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty, will review issues of mutual interest between the two countries and the way forward in strengthening bilateral relations." What's On Agenda? The 20th Joint Commission Meeting, being held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty, will review issues of mutual interest between the two countries and the way forward in strengthening bilateral relations, as per the release. During his visit, Araghchi will hold a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at Hyderabad House on May 8. Later in the day, he will meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Reading Between The Lines The Embassy of Iran in India said that the Iranian Foreign Minister would visit India after a stop in Islamabad, where he would hold talks with Pakistani officials. Though not officially, but India and Iran are likely to discuss the evolving situation with Pakistan. Iran will push for de-escalation but India has maintained that if Pakistan retaliates, then India would go all guns blazing against Islamabad. It's also likely that, despite its repeated rhetoric, Pakistan may have asked Iran to mediate between the two countries, fearing escalation. However, there is much more to Araghchi's visit to India. After the Pahalgam attack, when tensions flared up between India and Pakistan, Iran has offered to mediate for de-escalation. However, India has already rejected any third-party mediation. On April 25, the Iranian Foreign Minister had given a call for peace to prevail in the neighbourhood in a post on X. His call for peace came in the wake of the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which targeted tourists, killing 26 people.

Iran FM Araghchi to hold talks with EAM Jaishankar in New Delhi on Thursday

Tehran: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will arrive in New Delhi late Wednesday night on his first visit to India since assuming office in August 2024 during which he will be co-chairing the 20th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Iran along with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar at the Hyderabad House on Thursday afternoon. Later in the day he will call on President Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Joint Commission Meeting, being held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty, will review issues of mutual interest between the two countries and the way forward in strengthening bilateral relations, stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). While the Joint Commission is supposed to meet every year, there has been a gap in its meetings because of the Covid-19 pandemic and domestic pre-occupations of the two countries. "The latest status of the implementation of bilateral economic agreements between the two countries will be reviewed and followed up in the course of the commission's work," Iran's Embassy in New Delhi posted on X. Araghchi's visit comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following the heinous April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The Indian armed forces on Wednesday launched 'Operation Sindoor', targetting nine high-value terror locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the attack. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei had on Wednesday voiced serious concern over the intensifying conflict between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to exercise restraint. Baghaei stated that the growing tensions and clashes between two major nations, both of which share long-standing ties of friendship with Iran, are a matter of serious concern. He expressed hope that both parties would take steps toward de-escalation and prevent the situation from deteriorating further. Araghchi had also strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and extended condolences to the people and government of India "Iran strongly and unequivocally condemns the terrorist attack against tourists in Pahalgam. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people & government of India," he posted on X. Earlier this week, Araghchi visited Pakistan, leading a political delegation and holding meetings with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar.
