Russia loses $4 million worth of tanks, IFVs in Ukraine strike
Russian military equipment worth millions of dollars was destroyed in a Ukrainian drone strike, according to Kyiv. Ukraine's defense ministry said on Monday that Kyiv's forces had targeted a hangar in an unspecified area of Ukraine and posted a video it said was of the strike. Newsweek has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry for comment. Ukraine continues to use domestically-produced drones on the battlefield, and the latest reported strike on a Russia target comes as Moscow continues to lose high amounts of equipment and troops. Ukraine's defense ministry said its 225th Assault Regiment had managed to track down a Russian tank hiding in a hangar thanks to aerial reconnaissance. The post said that the troops had destroyed the site containing Russian armored equipment worth $4 million, with a T-72 tank and a BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) among the targets. Drone footage appears to show the targets being hit and the aftermath of the strikes.. Newsweek has been unable to independently verify the footage. 'A Ukrainian kamikaze drone hit the tank which was finished off by another drone,' said Ukrainian news outlet Defense Express. As of Monday, Russian forces had lost 1,710 T-72 tanks of various types over the course of the war, according to the website Oryx, which uses video and stills to tally losses. It comes as Ukraine made advances in the Toretsk direction in the Donetsk region on Sunday, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), while Russian forces continued offensive operations in the Chasiv Yar direction. Ivan Petrychak, spokesperson for Ukraine's 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade said that Russian forces trying to take Chasiv Yar, a strategic location, have been bolstered by the elite FSB Presidential Regiment, according to Suspilne media. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Air Force said Monday Russia had launched dozens of drone attacks across Ukraine overnight despite a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire starting Monday made by Kyiv. Ukraine defense ministry: 'Ukrainian warriors destroyed a hangar with russian armored equipment worth $4 million. Among the burned targets—a T-72 tank and a BMD-2 IFV.' Putin called for direct peace talks to be held on Thursday in Istanbul and Zelensky has said he would be in the Turkish city. This adds to anticipation over the prospect of direct talks between Vladimir Putin and Volodymr Zelensky, which have been backed by President Donald Trump. 2025 NEWSWEEK DIGITAL LLC.

Ukraine says its forces have opened up new front in Russia's Belgorod province
April 8 (UPI) -- President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian forces had opened a new front in Russia's Belgorod Province and were now fighting there, as well as in Kursk, defending the incursions as an "absolutely just" response to Russian aggression. Zelensky made the comments following a briefing from Ukraine Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on the situation at the front, including "our presence in the Kursk and Belgorod regions," saying the 225th Assault Regiment had been engaged in "active operations in Belgorod" for several days. "We continue to carry out active operations in the border areas on enemy territory, and that is absolutely just -- war must return to where it came from. The main objective remains the same: to protect our land and our communities in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions as much as possible from the Russian occupiers. "The commander-in-chief reported on the activity of our units along the borderline, in the so-called 'gray zone,' and directly on enemy territory," said Zelensky who stressed that these operations had also succeeded in easing the pressure on other parts of the front, particularly in the Donetsk region. "It is absolutely crucial to keep destroying Russian equipment and all logistics used by the occupiers all along the front," he added. The Institute for the Study of War said in an update Monday that geolocated footage showed Russian forces had made advances in the far northwest corner of Bolgorod province, close to the border with Kursk and Ukraine's Sumy province. However, it said it was unable to confirm reports by Russian military bloggers that Russian forces pushed Ukrainian forces out of the settlements of Demidovka and Popovka, about 65 miles northwest of Belgorod city, saying at least one other source had reported Ukrainian forces were holding their positions in Demidovka. Reports that Ukrainian forces had crossed the border emerged three weeks ago with U.S. European Command's, General Christopher Cavoli, confirming the counteroffensive to Congress on Thursday, saying they were "holding good defensive terrain" in the province. Zelensky's statement was the first time Kyiv had acknowledged its troops were fighting in Belgorod, although it had been waging a largely aerial war on the region for the past eight months, ever since it launched its incursion into the neighboring Kursk region, to the north in early August. Belgorod authorities began the evacuation of more than 14,000 people on Aug. 12 in the region's Krasnoyaruzhsky District due to "alarming" maneuvers by Ukrainian armed forces on the border nearby. Two days later, the region declared a state of emergency.

Ukrainian soldiers are in a second region of Russia, Zelenskyy confirms for the first time
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed for the first time on Monday that Ukrainian troops have been active in Russia's Belgorod region as they seek to protect Ukrainian towns near the border. Ukrainian troops remain in parts of the neighboring Russian region of Kursk eight months after a cross-border incursion, though Russian forces have recaptured much lost territory. In his nightly video address, Zelenskyy said Ukraine's top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had presented a report 'on the front line, our presence in the Kursk region and our presence in the Belgorod region.' 'We continue active operations in the enemy's border areas and this is absolutely justified. The war must return to where it came from. 'Our main objective remains the same: to protect our land and our communities in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions from Russian occupiers.' He later referred to operations in the area by Ukraine's 225th Assault Regiment and congratulated the unit for its performance. Zelenskyy repeated Kyiv's long-held contention that despite Russia's recapture of areas of Kursk in recent weeks, the operation was successful in that it drew Russian forces away from the war's main front line in Ukraine's Donetsk region. 'Due to the entire Kursk operation, we have managed to reduce pressure on other frontline sectors, particularly in Donetsk region,' he said. The president last month referred obliquely to 'certain steps' undertaken by Ukraine's military in Russia 'a little below the Kursk region', implicitly suggesting a presence in Belgorod region. Russian military bloggers had reported battles in Belgorod region between Russian and Ukrainian troops. On Sunday, Russia said its troops had seized the village of Basivka in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region -- opposite Kursk -- and were battering Ukrainian forces in different settlements. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly suggested that Russian forces carve out a buffer zone along the border. A Ukrainian military spokesperson issued a new denial on Monday that Basivka was in Russian hands.
