Man arrested in Caloocan after running amok, firing shots

A 59-year-old man, reportedly a retired Philippine marine, was arrested after running amok and firing shots at a group of youth he accused of being drug addicts. According to Sangandaan Police chief Captain Zoilo Lopez, the suspect and his friend were on their way home from a drinking session when he got into an argument with youth, asking if they were drug addicts. This was when he brought out his gun, and fired shots. 'Nadaanan niya itong mga kabataan na ito na kumakain sa isang karinderya at sinita niya ito at ang sabi niya ay napagkamalan niya raw po itong mga adik. So nasagot siya ng isang kabataan, at 'yun po ang dahilan upang bumunot ng baril itong suspect natin at bigla na lang po silang pinutukan,' he said in a report on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (He came across these young people eating at a roadside eatery and confronted them, saying he had mistaken them for drug addicts. One of them responded to him, and that was the reason for the suspect to draw his gun and suddenly start shooting at them.) The suspect's friend, who was trying to ease the situation, sustained an injury after a bullet grazed his thigh. He was brought home, and did not file any charges against the suspect. The suspect, however, was later arrested by authorities in his residence where the firearm was also retrieved. He faces charges of attempted homicide, and alarms and scandal. 'No comment po, pasensya na po,' he said in the report. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

The suspect was identified through a neighbor's CCTV footage that showed a group of youths going back and forth near the Coquilla residence a day before the murder happened. Three suspects, all minors, have earlier been arrested. The victim, Sophia Marie, finished high school as third honorable mention, and was set to start her college education at the University of the Philippines Diliman. — Jon Viktor D. Motorcycle taxi rider found buried in Gen. Mariano Alvarez, Cavite construction site

The body of a 31-year-old motorcycle taxi rider was found buried in a construction site in General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite, with authorities looking at jealousy as the motive for the killing as the victim was last seen with a man who fathered a child with his live-in partner. The victim, identified as Jayjay Caluza, was last seen early morning on June 24 riding along Trece Martires on the way to Dasmariñas, with a man riding pillion. The passenger, now considered to be a person of interest, was the former partner of Caluza's live-in partner, identified as Grace. The victim was missing for two weeks and was found buried in a construction site where the suspect was said to be the foreman. It was the last location in the global positioning system (GPS) of Caluza's motorcycle. Upon inspecting the area, authorities said they were suspicious of the workers as they all ran away when they were seen. The operating system of the backhoe also showed that it was used hours before the regular working hours, prompting authorities to ask the construction company to dig up the area. That was where Caluza's body was found. Three days before Caluza went missing, the suspect was said to have taken Grace, and forced her to stay with him and their child. He then asked Caluza to bring him to work, and that was the last time the victim was seen alive. 'Binantaan niya po si Jayjay na ano, papatayin kung hindi daw po ako sumama, kaya sumama na po ako,' Grace said in a report by Jonathan Andal on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. 'Wala po akong pagmamahal doon sa lalaking 'yun eh. 'Yung sustento lang po niyang pera 'yung inaano ko kasi may anak din po kami non,' she added. (He threatened Jayjay that he would kill him if I did not come along, which is why I went… I have no love for that man. I was just after his financial sustenance because we have a child together.) Grace said she was also sure that there were multiple people involved in the killing of Caluza, as her former partner already detailed what they would do earlier. 'Hindi lang po isa ang gumawa noon. Tiyak po ako kasama 'yung mga pinsan niya dun eh. Nasabi na niya po 'yun eh, na aanuhin niya eh, baka pagtulungan nila 'yun si Jayjay eh, 'pag hindi ko pa daw nilayuan 'yun eh. Sobrang sakit ng ginawa niya sa taong 'yun. Nagtiwala 'yun eh,' she said. (More than one person did it. I am sure that his cousins were involved. He already said it before, that they would gang up on Jayjay if I didn't leave him. What they did to him was really painful. He trusted him.) According to Caluza's mother, Carmelita Caluza, her son suffered 12 stab wounds, based on a report from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO). 'Noon pong inano ng SOCO, labingdalawa daw po ang saksak niya eh, apat daw po dito sa may baga, tapos walo daw po sa likod. Talagang parang ginawa nilang hayop ang anak ko,' she said in the same report. 'Napakasakit ng ginawa mo. 'Yung anak ko sobrang bait. Napakabait ng anak ko na 'yan. Bakit mo ginawa? Bakit ginawa sa anak ko 'to? Bakit?' she added. (According to SOCO, he had 12 stab wounds. Four near the lungs, and eight in the back. What you did was very painful. My child was really kind. That son of mine was really kind. Why did you do it? Why did you do it to my child? Why?) For its part, Naic Police deputy chief of police Police Captain Grenie Dolnagon said they are looking at more than one person of interest. 'More than two and nakikita namin na person of interest. Actually marami po kaming nakausap diyan, 'yun nga lang iisa ang sinasabi—na hindi nila kilala, hindi nila alam, isang linggo lang sila na nakatira doon,' he said. (We are looking at more than two persons of interest. Actually, we talked to a lot and they all say the same thing—they don't know them, they don't know, they have lived in the area for a week only.) The victim's family is now appealing for financial help to fund the funeral and the burial. 'Sana po mahanap na siya at kung sino man po ang kasama niya. Gusto ko pong mabigyan ng hustisya 'yung anak kong namatay,' the victim's mother Carmelita said. (Hopefully he, and whoever else was involved, is found. I want justice for my child who died.) — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

PCG assures meticulous search and retrieval ops in Taal Lake, as divers at risk

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) over the weekend assured that the search and retrieval operations for the missing sabungeros in Taal Lake are being done meticulously, as the lives of the divers are at risk for every descent they take. According to PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemi Cayabyab, the operations team is maximizing every dive to ensure that it would be productive, given the risks taken by the divers. 'Masusi po ang ginagamit nating mga search pattern and search strategy. Talagang we always want to maximize (The search pattern and search strategy we use is very meticulous. We really want to maximize),' she said in a report by Vonne Aquino on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. 'Bawat baba po ng ating mga divers ay meron po tayong makikita (We see something in every descent of our divers) as much as possible kasi (because) again, we are compromising the lives of our divers here,' she added. Given the risks, hyperbaric doctors are at the scene to attend to the divers before and after their descent. The PCG earlier on Sunday released underwater footage of the operations in the Taal Lake, with divers facing conditions such as murky water, strong underwater currents, and the depth of the lake, among others. Technical divers also attended mass on the shores of the lake prior to the operations. The teams retrieved sacks from the lake as part of the search for the missing sabungeros that contain what appeared to be bones, which the PCG has denied as being planted in the area as alleged by some critics. According to Southern Tagalog Coast Guard District Commander Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, divers are thoroughly inspecting sacks found at the bottom of the lake, which are frisked and reported to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) before these are brought to land. 'That's normal. Sabi nga nila, we cannot please everyone. Basta kami, 'yung inyong PCG, katuwang 'yung Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Department of Justice, tuloy tuloy namin gagawin 'yung aming trabaho professionally, diligently, and properly, as much as possible… Until such time na matapos namin 'yung area na i-search,' he said in the same report. (That's normal. As they say, we cannot please everyone. For us, the PCG, in line with the PNP and the DOJ, we will continue doing our job professionally, diligently, and properly, as much as possible… Until such time that we finish searching the area.) 'Merong mga talagang sacks doon sa bottom, probably from (animal) feeds no, pero 'yun 'yung iniisa isa na i-check natin 'yung mga laman, kinakapa ng ating mga divers para to really help,' he added. (There are really sacks at the bottom, probably from [animal] feeds, but the contents are being checked one by one, the divers frisk them to really help.) Tuvilla said the divers are using the jackstay search method, which involves using a line as a guide to ensure thorough coverage of the search area. 'Nag-move tayo ng northeast, 10 meters northeast using the jackstay search method na tinatawag, which is a straight line then going back,' he said. 'Initially dun sa area na 'yun, negative 'yung nakuha natin, so we will be adjusting to another part, no, we will move again, so hangga't ma-cover natin 'yung buong kumbaga circumference ng buong search area natin,' he added. (We moved 10 meters northeast using the so-called jackstay search method, which is a straight line then going back. Initially, in that area, we yielded negative results, so we will be adjusting to another part, no, we will move again, until we cover the whole circumference of the whole search area.) The PCG is also set to start using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) on Monday during its search and retrieval operations moving forward, which will have a capacity to see up to 1,000 feet underwater. For its part, the National Bureau of Investigation Forensic and Scientific Service said they have yet to receive any samples from the content of the sacks retrieved from the lake. Should these be confirmed to be human bones, these will then be tested for DNA and compared with living relatives of the missing sabungeros. Meanwhile, forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun said authorities should handle the retrieved sacks and their contents with care, as she observed that one of the sacks was opened, and its contents scattered on the ground. 'Medyo dismayado ako dun sa unang picture na inilabas nila, na apparently, bakit ang linis ng sako eh naggaling sa tubig. Apparently, inilipat nila sa ibang sako. For you to do that at the scene, alanganin 'yun,' she said. (I was somewhat dismayed with the first photo they released. The sack looked so clean despite coming from the water. Apparently, they transferred the contents to another sack. Doing that at the scene raises questions. It's questionable.) This comes as at least 34 cockfighting enthusiasts or sabungeros were reported missing from various areas in Luzon — including Batangas, Bulacan, Laguna, Manila, and Rizal — from April 2021 to January 2022. One of the accused in the disappearances, known as Totoy, earlier claimed that the bodies were thrown into the Taal Lake after the sabungeros caught for allegedly cheating by weakening their own roosters and betting on those of their opponents. — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/RF, GMA Integrated News

Fishermen, tourism in Laurel, Batangas affected by search for missing sabungeros

Residents of Laurel, Batangas said that the search and retrieval operations for the missing sabungeros in Taal Lake had negatively impacted their fishing and tourism industries. In a ''24 Oras Weekend'' report by Raffy Tima, Laurel, Batangas Mayor Lyndon Bruce said that fishermen have been casting their nets less frequently since there is less demand for their catch. 'Base sa report ng ating fish port office, before nagkakaroon tayo ng 10 na bankang pumapalaot. Ngayon dalawa na lang kada araw, dahil nang walang masyadong order na dinadala sa market sa Manila,' Bruce said. (Based on reports from our fish port office, we previously had 10 boats going out to sea. Now, there are only two per day, as there aren't many orders brought to markets in Manila.) He added that there were also fewer tourists in the area. Still, Bruce said that the local government was willing to assist the national government in the search and retrieval operations. 'Kung ano po yung kailangan nila, nakakapag-provide… Tulad nga po ng mga bankang malalaki, tumawag sila kahapon at kailangan nila. Kami naman po ay willing na nakikipag-cooperate sa kanila,' he said. (Whatever they needed, we were able to provide... Like the big boats, they called yesterday because they needed them. We are willing to cooperate with them.) On the third day of the search and retrieval operations, Philippine Coast Guard divers retrieved two more sacks that may contain human remains. Taal Lake is being searched for bodies of the missing sabungeros, who were abducted from 2021 to 2022, after whistleblower Julie "Dondon" Patidongan stated that the cockfight enthusiasts were already dead and dumped in the lake. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
