Gulveer and other athletes express their delight after Asian Athletics Championships
By Diptayan Hazra New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): Indian athletes showcased grit, determination, and talent at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, finishing second in the overall medal tally behind China. With a total of 24 medals, 8 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze, India made a strong statement on the continental stage. One of the standout performers for India was Gulveer Singh, who etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to win two gold medals in this edition of the championships. The 26-year-old Army athlete clinched the 10,000m gold on the opening day and followed it up with a resounding victory in the 5,000m. 'I am very happy after returning home. My next challenge is the World Championship,' said Gulveer to ANI, who proved his dominance in long-distance running. Another golden performance came from 18-year-old high jumper Pooja Singh, who scaled a personal best of 1.89m to win India's third gold medal of the tournament. Her jump not only secured the top podium spot but also marked a significant breakthrough in her young career. 'I am feeling very happy, I am feeling proud as I won gold for India,' Pooja said, beaming with joy. 'How much we need to do, what we need to do, what kind of performance we need to give, I try to give my best,' she added. Her coach, Balwan Singh, praised her resilience, 'She belongs to a small village in Parta, Fatehabad district of Haryana. She's continuing her training there. From coming out of there, she came to this level.' He added, 'She is the youngest Indian to win a medal in the Asian Athletics Championship. Our next targets are the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.' Sachin Yadav, on his international debut, bagged the silver medal in javelin throw, registering a personal and season best of 85.16m, finishing just behind Pakistan's Olympic star Arshad Nadeem (86.40m). 'I am happy to compete with Arshad Nadeem. It's okay, I will try to do well in the next competition and I believe I can beat him,' said Sachin. Despite the cold weather conditions, his mindset remained clear, 'My mindset was to do well.' In the triple jump, Pravin Chitravel leapt to 16.90m to earn the silver medal. 'I am really happy to get a medal. My next target is the World Championship in Tokyo. Training is going well and I'm feeling confident,' said Chitravel, who has consistently performed on the international stage. Yoonus Shah, competing in the 1500m, won a bronze in his first senior Asian Championship. 'I am feeling very happy, this was my first senior Asian Championship competition. I will try to do better and will get that gold. I did well, I brought Bronze, I felt really good,' he said. Servin Sebastian, who opened India's medal tally in Gumi, earned a bronze in the 20km race walk event. 'I am happy and proud that I brought a medal for my country. This is my first international medal and the feeling is very good,' he said, adding that he is now eyeing a strong performance at the World Championship. (ANI)

New Delhi [India] June 1 (ANI): Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra expressed gratitude to Indian athletes who fought hard in the 26th Asian Athletics Championships on Saturday in the South Korean City of Gumi. The Indian athletes swelled the overall medal tally to 24 and finished in second place behind China. Eight of the 24 medals were gold, 10 silver, and six bronze. China topped the table chart with 26 medals, including 15 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals. Neeraj Chopra, in a post on X, said, 'So happy to see Indian Athletics grow and strive! Onwards and upwards from here, jy hind.' All eyes on the final day of the continental competition were on the men's javelin throw. Sachin Yadav, on his international debut, recorded a personal and season best of 85.16m to win the silver medal behind Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (86.40m). The final day also saw Animesh Kujur sprinting to glory in the men's 200m. A false start by a Chinese sprinter didn't upset the Indian sprinter's strategy to win a medal in the 200m. On his way to winning bronze, Kujur clocked 20.32 seconds to better his own national record of 20.40 seconds set in a domestic meet in Kochi in April. Indian quartet of Srabani Nanda, SS Sneha, Abhinaya Rajarajan and Nithya Gandhe clocked 43.86 seconds to win silver in women's 4x100m relay. China took home gold while Thailand won bronze. Distance runner Parul Chaudhary added a second silver to her kitty on Saturday. The winner of silver in the women's 3,000m steeplechase added a 5000m silver medal to her collection today. Middle-distance runner Pooja also added an 800m bronze to her kitty. She had won a 1500m silver in the competition. Vithya Ramraj also won bronze in the women's 400m hurdles. She clocked 56.46 seconds. However, Jyothi Yarraji and Nithya Gandhe weren't successful in winning medals in the women's 200m. (ANI)

VIJAYAWADA: Kunja Rajitha (19), a young sprinter from the remote tribal village of Ramachandrapuram in Koonavaram mandal, Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, has made headlines by winning gold in the women's 4×400m relay at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea. Her rise from poverty to the continental stage is a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of opportunity. Born into a family of migrant workers who relocated from Chhattisgarh to Andhra Pradesh four decades ago, Rajitha is the youngest of six siblings. She lost her father, Mariah, when she was just 3-year-old, and was raised by her mother, Bhadramma, under financial constraints. Her athletic talent came to light at Arrupe High School in Katukapalli, run by the Loyola Integrated Tribal Development Society (LITDS) in Chintoor mandal. It was here that Fr Yesu Ratnam noticed her potential when she was in Class VII. 'She has speed and focus. I saw a spark in her,' he recalled. Encouraged by him, Rajitha began competing in school-level events, winning her first 100m race in 2016. After school, she pursued Intermediate at CK Junior College, Mangalagiri, and later joined SAAP (Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh) in Nellore in 2018. Trained by coaches Vamsi Kiran and Krishna Mohan, she continued to excel despite challenges such as financial hardship and delay in obtaining caste certificate.

His victory adds to a list of achievements by Kuwaiti athletics team athletes in recent years during their participation in international and continental championships, achieving distinguished numbers and winning various medals. In Doha, Kuwait's weightlifting athletes won 11 medals on Friday, seven of them gold medals, at the Asian Masters Weightlifting Championships. Mohammad Al-Nasser won a gold medal in the 45-year-old category, under 96 kg, while Musa Mubarak won a silver medal in the under-102 kg category. In the women's competition, Hawra Al-Moussawi won a silver medal in the under-87 kg category, Amal Al-Sharifi won a gold medal in the under-55 kg category, and Maryam Bujbara won a gold medal in the under-64 kg category.
