Neeraj Chopra hails Indian athletes, following their brilliant performance in Asian Athletics Championships

India Gazette01-06-2025
New Delhi [India] June 1 (ANI): Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra expressed gratitude to Indian athletes who fought hard in the 26th Asian Athletics Championships on Saturday in the South Korean City of Gumi. The Indian athletes swelled the overall medal tally to 24 and finished in second place behind China.
Eight of the 24 medals were gold, 10 silver, and six bronze. China topped the table chart with 26 medals, including 15 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.
Neeraj Chopra, in a post on X, said, 'So happy to see Indian Athletics grow and strive! Onwards and upwards from here, jy hind.'
All eyes on the final day of the continental competition were on the men's javelin throw. Sachin Yadav, on his international debut, recorded a personal and season best of 85.16m to win the silver medal behind Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem (86.40m).
The final day also saw Animesh Kujur sprinting to glory in the men's 200m. A false start by a Chinese sprinter didn't upset the Indian sprinter's strategy to win a medal in the 200m.
On his way to winning bronze, Kujur clocked 20.32 seconds to better his own national record of 20.40 seconds set in a domestic meet in Kochi in April.
Indian quartet of Srabani Nanda, SS Sneha, Abhinaya Rajarajan and Nithya Gandhe clocked 43.86 seconds to win silver in women's 4x100m relay. China took home gold while Thailand won bronze.
Distance runner Parul Chaudhary added a second silver to her kitty on Saturday. The winner of silver in the women's 3,000m steeplechase added a 5000m silver medal to her collection today.
Middle-distance runner Pooja also added an 800m bronze to her kitty. She had won a 1500m silver in the competition. Vithya Ramraj also won bronze in the women's 400m hurdles. She clocked 56.46 seconds.
However, Jyothi Yarraji and Nithya Gandhe weren't successful in winning medals in the women's 200m. (ANI)

Bangladesh, Kazakhstan to be part of Asia Cup in place of Pakistan & Oman

With just 10 days to go for the first match, Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) finally announced the schedule for the men's Asia Cup hockey tournament. Pakistan, however, will not be part of it, having been replaced by Bangladesh in the eight-team tournament that will be held from Aug 29 to Sept 7 at Rajgir Sports Complex in Bihar. Oman also pulled out of the tournament at the last moment, with Kazakhstan taking their place. The remaining five teams taking part in the event besides hosts India are Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and South Korea. While India have been clubbed with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A, Pool B consists of Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh and Chinese Taipei. After the pool stage, where the teams will play each other once, the top two teams from each pool will play in the Super4s. Once again it will be played in a round-robin format with the top two teams making it to the final. The winner will be awarded a spot in the FIH World Cup to be held next year in the Netherlands and Belgium. As far as the fixtures are concerned, Malaysia will play the tournament opener against Bangladesh, while India will hope to make a winning start when they take on China. Being the No. 1 side in Asia, Craig Fulton's men will undoubtedly come into the tournament as strong favourites. But hockey fans will certainly feel the absence of Pakistan. Their participation was always doubtful following the Pahalgam incident. However, the Indian govt had said it would provide visas to the players and even Hockey India was confident of their participation. But Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) refused to travel citing security concerns. AHF president Fumio Ogura, meanwhile, said in a statement, "The Asia Cup will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia." Korea continue to be the most successful side in the tournament, having won the title five times in the past. As for India, they finished third in the last edition in Jakarta but it does seem they will finish on top this time around. Riku, Kuldeep set for Asia Cup action

1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Two UP players, chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav and batter Rinku Singh , have secured berths in the Indian squad for Asia Cup , to be played in UAE from Sep 8. The team was announced in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. Kuldeep, who was also a part of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series in England, could not make it to the playing XI in any of the five Test matches. After the Indian Premier League in May, he was not seen in action in any official matches and now will head directly to Dubai for the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format. Rinku Singh has seen some action in the ongoing UPT20 League. He led the Meerut Mavericks in the inaugural match and bowled a couple of overs, taking one wicket. Talking to TOI, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "After the England tour he is in his home town (Kanpur) and doing a lot of net practice and playing friendly matches. He is fit and fine for the Asia Cup." "He is always a dominant force on Asian pitches and should do well again, like in the 2018 Asia Cup when he had the most wickets during the tournament. He is in form and India's number one spin bowler when playing in Asia," he said. Speaking about the squad, former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim said, "Inclusion of Shubman Gill is a good move. He has earned place in the T20 team on the sheer strength of his performance in the Test series in England. Being made the vice-captain, the team management and national selectors see him as an all format player-cum- captain." Asked about the middle order batter Rinku Singh, he said, "I'm glad he is being given another chance. The Indian team still believes in his value to the team. He bats well, has started bowling off-spin, and is an excellent fielder. You can place him anywhere in the outfield, and he has safe hands." "He has the quality to deliver a good performance," Karim told TOI on the sidelines of the UPT20 League where he is a commentator. On Kuldeep, he said, "In the Asia Cup, he will be the main bowler with Axar Patel. His wrist spinning quality was effective in every aspect. I hope he will perform well again and his contribution is so important for team India." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). J.K. Rowling , best known for the Harry Potter books, responded strongly on social media. She called Mouncey a 'cheating man' who fears he 'won't be allowed to cheat his way to the Olympics.' This sharp comment from Rowling stirred debate and grabbed attention internationally, especially among those who follow transgender rights and women's sports policies. J.K. Rowling slams Hannah Mouncey over Los Angeles 2028 Olympics comments J.K. Rowling made her comment about Mouncey on social media, writing: 'Man fears he won't be allowed to cheat his way to the Olympics by playing against women. Man says anti-cheat sentiment is being 'weaponized' against men like him, who cheat…' Her words sparked strong reactions. Supporters of transgender inclusion saw the comment as hurtful. Critics of trans athletes in women's sports saw it as standing up for fairness. Media outlets like Fox News reported the exchange, noting how it added fuel to the already heated debate over trans athletes competing in women's events. Hannah Mouncey fears Olympic ban after Donald Trump's new rules Hannah Mouncey shared her worries on the Sacked podcast this week. She said she fears being banned by the end of the year. Hannah Mouncey spoke in Australia and noted that while some sports bodies are tightening rules, she hopes handball will not follow that path. She said she has played for the Australian women's handball team since 2018 and had positive feedback, even from teams in places like Iran and Kazakhstan. Hannah Mouncey added , 'There's this idea that trans athletes have an unfair advantage, but the results don't show that. I've always believed in fairness and restrictions where needed, but blanket bans are not the answer.'
