Super-magnetic dead star throws a violent temper tantrum as NASA X-ray spacecraft looks on
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Using NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) spacecraft, astronomers have made detailed observations of a highly magnetic dead star or "magnetar" as it threw a massive tantrum. The observations mark the first time that the polarization of X-rays from a magnetar, neutron stars possessing the most powerful magnetic fields in the known universe, have been measured during an outburst or "activation phase." The erupting magnetar observed by IXPE is known as 1E 1841-045, a neutron star located around 28,000 light-years from Earth in the supernova wreckage known as Kes 73, which shocked astronomers when it burst to life on Aug. 20, 2024. "This is the first time we have been able to observe the polarization of a magnetar in an active state, and this has allowed us to constrain the mechanisms and geometry of emission that lie behind these active states," team leader and National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) researcher Michela Rigoselli said in a statement. "It will now be interesting to observe 1E 1841-045 once it has returned to its quiescent state to monitor the evolution of its polarimetric properties." Like all neutron stars, magnetars begin when the lives of stars with ten times the mass of the sun or greater run out of fuel for nuclear fusion. This ends the production of outward radiation pressure flowing from the cores of these stars that, for millions of years, has supported them against the inward pressure of their own a result of this, the cores of these massive stars crush down at a rapid rate, creating shock waves that ripple into the outer stellar layers of the star, triggering massive supernova explosions that send most of the mass of these stars hurtling into space, creating wreckage fields like Kes 73. What is left behind is the core of the star, crushed down to a width of around 12 miles (20 kilometers) but with a mass between one and two times that of the sun. This leads to material filling the neutron star that is so dense that if a teaspoon of it were brought to Earth, it would weigh 10 million tons, about equal to 85,000 adult blue whales. Another consequence of the collapse of the stellar core that births a neutron star is that the magnetic field lines of that star are squashed together. The closer together the magnetic field lines are, the stronger the magnetic field gets. As a result, neutron stars have the strongest magnetic fields in the known universe. Magnetars take this to the extreme, possessing magnetic fields that are up to 1 trillion times stronger than Earth's magnetosphere. The magnetic environments around these stars are unlike anything found anywhere else in the universe and way beyond anything we could generate on can get hints about these magnetic fields and the environments around magnetars by measuring the organized orientation or "polarization" of light emitted from them. Magnetars and the phenomena around them get even more extreme when they are in an active outburst phase. During these phases, magnetars can release as much as 1,000 times the energy they do when in a quiescent phase. Yet astronomers still aren't clear on the mechanisms that ramp up this energy output. Observations like this one could help change that. Related Stories: — What happens inside neutron stars, the universe's densest known objects? — James Webb Space Telescope finds neutron star mergers forge gold in the cosmos: 'It was thrilling' — The most powerful explosions in the universe could reveal where gold comes from What this team found was that X-rays from 1E 1841-045 become increasingly polarized at higher energy levels. Yet the X-rays kept the same polarization angle throughout this ramping up of energy levels. They reason that this means that the components behind the emissions are somehow connected. Additionally, the highest energy component, which is the most elusive and difficult to study, is strongly influenced by the magnetic field of the team's research was published on Wednesday (May 28) in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Shock vid shows half-frozen paraglider who was sucked 5 MILES into sky by vortex & left shivering in -40C conditions
A SHOCKING video shows the terrifying moment a paraglider was sucked five miles into the sky and endured bone-chilling conditions among the clouds. He reportedly became trapped in a rare "cloud suction" that pulled him more than 28,000ft into the air during a flight over China . 4 4 4 The paraglider, who miraculously survived the ordeal on Saturday, caught the nerve-shredding moments on camera. His jaw-dropping footage has now gone viral on social media. He took off for his flight from an altitude of around 3,000 metres (9,842.52ft) over the Qilian Mountains according to local media reports. But the paraglider quickly malfunctioned and became uncontrollable, dragging up thousands feet more up into the clouds. He was sucked to the sort of heights at which passenger aeroplanes might cruise. The footage lays bare the icy conditions he had to endure, suffering from extensive frostbite at the terrifying altitude. He can be seen clinging onto his parachute for dear life in the frightening conditions. Visibility is initially poor at the start of the clip as the paraglider is sucked to high altitudes over the mountains. But at the peak of the trip, he can be seen dangling over the clouds - visibly freezing cold and covered in frost. He was not wearing an oxygen mask, fully exposing him to the hostile elements. Inside dystopian Chinese megacity of 32 million where workers 'don't see sunlight' & Big Brother is always watching However, the man miraculously remained conscious throughout the ordeal and successfully brought his parachute to a safe landing. He would later recall experiencing hypoxia and having his hands exposed to the blistering cold above the clouds, local media has reported. "I just kept communicating over the radio the entire time," he said. An experienced paraglider surnamed Ou told local media that few people would survive being pulled to such high altitudes. "This is truly miraculous," Ou said. "His mental resilience was extraordinary." Ou added that paragliders will typically come prepared for such flights with cold weather gear, as it would already be extremely cold at the take-off altitude. But at 8,000 metres, temperatures can drop to as low as -40, and oxygen supplies would be critically low, Jiupai News has reported. Why is China now investigating him? THE paraglider may have miraculously survived the terrifying ordeal, but he now faces an investigation from the authorities. It is understood that he holds a valid paragliding licence, but Jiupai News reports that failed to file the requisite flight plan for this trip. The local aviation sports regulations say that such activities need approval from air traffic controllers - and that paragliders cannot alter their planned routes without authorisation. Paragliding activities are also prohibited under adverse weather conditions. Anyone found to have breached the rules faces sanctions that can range from warning and fines to criminal charges. The incident is now being investigated by regulatory authorities. A source told Jiupai News that he had failed to file the necessary flight plan - including getting airspace clearance for the launch site. Chinese national aviation sports regulations state that aerial activities need prior airspace approval from air traffic control. Paragliding activities have to be carried out according to a pre-arranged plan, and trips are prohibited under adverse weather conditions. Changing flight plans without authorisation is also not allowed. Penalties for those found in breach of the rules range from warning and fines to criminal charges, local media reports.

Dozens came out for Memorial Day Parade in Taylor
TAYLOR, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A series of commemorations stepped off across NEPA Monday morning. One of them was Taylor Borough's Annual Memorial Day Parade. 28/22 News Reporter Amelia Sack spoke with members of the community there. Dozens came out for a beautiful day in Taylor Borough. The parade is a tradition many say they look forward to every year. It was a big turnout in Taylor Borough for the Annual Memorial Day Parade. Community organizations, first responders, and students from Riverside High School stepped out on the downtown route, all to recognize the meaning behind Memorial Day: the men and women who lost their lives serving our country. 'They gave the ultimate sacrifice, which just goes to show how great of a country we have if people are willing to die for it,' New Jersey resident Robert Gibbs said. 'StrangeFest' turns Scranton theater into macabre marketplace 'I think it's important that we recognize that our veterans made a sacrifice for all of us at home and that this sacrifice some people don't come back from. And we've gotta recognize that every time because not a lot of people are here that we can celebrate that for,' Nicholas Ponas from Taylor Borough said. Even some of the youngest in attendance remember who the day is for. 'The soldiers. We do it for the soldiers,' Aria and Natalia Knight from Taylor Borough told 28/22 News. The parade wrapped up at the borough's community center with a closing ceremony. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Trump says Tillis refusing US attorney nomination 'disappointing' as deadline for left-wing court action looms
President Donald Trump said it was "disappointing" that Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis said he will not support the president's nominee to serve as U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin. "It's disappointing because, you know, I know that he's very talented," Trump said from the Oval Office Wednesday afternoon while taking questions from the media during a swearing-in ceremony for the U.S. ambassador to China, David Perdue. "Crime is down in Washington, D.C. Street crime, violent crime by 25%. And, that's, people have seen they've noticed a big difference." Tillis sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is overseeing the confirmation process of Martin. The nominee has served as interim U.S. attorney since Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration but is facing a May 20 deadline to be confirmed. Martin met with Senate lawmakers Monday, and Tillis told reporters Tuesday he wouldn't support Martin, throwing the nomination into limbo on the committee that is composed of 12 Republicans and 10 Democrats. TILLIS PUTS ONUS ON TRUMP TO AVOID BOASBERG PICKING US ATTORNEY AFTER MARTIN'S NOMINATION APPEARS SUNK "I've indicated to the White House I wouldn't support his nomination," Tillis told reporters Tuesday . If an interim U.S. attorney is not confirmed by the Senate within 120 days, however, judges on the federal district court for that district could name a new interim U.S. attorney until the role is filled. Trump antagonist Judge James Boasberg, an Obama-appointed judge at the center of legal efforts targeting Trump's deportation efforts, is the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. "I didn't know that. … I feel very badly about it," Trump continued on Wednesday. "Only in the sense that, in this short period of time that he's been there, crime is down 25% in Washington, D.C., but that's really up to the senators. If they, you know, feel that way, they have to vote the way they vote, they have to follow their heart and they have to follow their mind." When asked Tuesday if Tillis is comfortable with the left-wing court picking an interim U.S. attorney, his office told Fox News Digital it is the office's understanding that Attorney General Pam Bondi can pick an acting replacement, bypassing involvement from federal judges. DEADLINE LOOMS ALLOWING LEFT-WING COURT TO SELECT US ATTORNEY AS STATE AGS URGE CONFIRMATION OF TRUMP PICK "Our understanding is that if the Senate does not confirm a U.S. attorney before an acting U.S. attorney's term expires, the attorney general can still pick the next acting replacement as long as it is done before the original appointment expires under 28 USC 546," a spokesman for Tillis' office told Fox News Digital Tuesday. Tillis' office referred Fox News Digital to 28 U.S. Code § 546, which says, "If an appointment expires under subsection (c)(2), the district court for such district may appoint a United States attorney to serve until the vacancy is filled. The order of appointment by the court shall be filed with the clerk of the court." TRUMP NOMINATES JAN. 6 DEFENSE ATTORNEY FOR TOP PROSECUTOR ROLE IN DC Fox News Digital reached out to the Department of Justice about the statute Wednesday, but did not immediately receive a reply. Martin previously worked as a defense attorney and represented Americans charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, which Tillis took issue with, he told reporters Tuesday. Trump granted clemency to more than 1,500 Jan. 6 criminal defendants upon taking office. TRUMP NOMINATES JUDGE TO SERVE AS NEXT US ATTORNEY FOR SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA "Mr. Martin did a good job of explaining the one area that I think he's probably right, that there were some people that were over-prosecuted, but there were some, 200 or 300 of them that should have never gotten a pardon," Tillis said. "If Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. attorney for any district except the district where Jan. 6 happened, the protest happened, I'd probably support him, but not in this district." Trump and his administration have rallied support for Martin as his confirmation process comes down to the wire. "His approval is IMPERATIVE in terms of doing all that has to be done to SAVE LIVES and to, MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN," Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social . CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP "Ed Martin will be a big player in doing so and, I hope, that the Republican Senators will make a commitment to his approval, which is now before them."
