Annual Big Hoopla STEM challenge held on Sunday
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Big Hoopla annual STEM Challenge was held at Wright State University on Sunday. The event was free and had science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) demonstrations. There were award-winning science shows by Mister C. and Eric Energy. Local college hosted the Big Hoopla 4-Miler race Joshua Hun, a high school senior, spoke with 2 News about his love of robotics. Showing the ones his team had designed, built and programmed for the season. 'All of these robots are custom-built to do a specific task,' Hun spoke as he pointed to a robot on the ground, 'This one down here was designed to pick up the blocks and deliver them to certain areas. The other ones are designed to pick up disks and shoot them out. Kind of like the hippo one over there.' Hun explained how teamwork is critical to the process of designing robots. 'We get a lot of time together as a team to discuss, brainstorm and design, go through this whole iteration process of finding what doesn't work, what does work, and seeing how all of that meshes together and just getting to build robots, which is ultimately the best part of it,' said Hun. Donate blood before Spring Break, get a pickleball set He shared his joy about so many younger kids getting into math and science. 'I got to introduce the concept of robotics and learning at a relatively young age. And so I want to be able to share that with everyone and be able to kind of share the love that I have, which is robotics has this many people,' said Hun. 'It's amazing. It's such a wonderful feeling, being able to see such young kids being introduced to this so soon.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. UD student speaks on Saturday's early St. Paddy's party
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A University of Dayton student spoke about what he witnessed at Saturday's street party, specifically on Lowes Street. At 10 p.m. the school released an alert regarding shots fired on Jasper Street. No injuries were reported. Multiple medics were called to neighborhoods filled with student housing on Saturday. There were five arrests made. Shots-fired alert ends busy day at UD that already had tear gas, arrests, hospital trips Nick Mulvihill, a finance major and senior at UD spoke to our 2 News team. Mulvihill lives on Lowes and has experienced the pre- St. Paddy's parties over the last four years. 'Obviously, it's a Dayton tradition. I've seen love doing the whole Forties at Four and coming out here with you know, 10,000 undergrads basically,' said Mulvihill. (Forties at Four is a drinking game in which a person tries to drink a 40-ounce bottle of beer/malt at 4 p.m.) He continued, explaining what the day was like for him. He mentioned that he got to pet police horses. 'Living on the street that the day drink happens, you know, a ton of fun. But yeah, once the police started shooting pepper spray and all the pepper balls, but that's when I kind of got out of hand,' said Mulvihill. 'But really – I enjoy the police trying their best to prevent a lot of the dangers from happening. In past years, we've had, you know, cars being flipped.' He said he was thankful for and appreciated the police but found some of their orders confusing. 'I appreciate them for, you know, trying to prevent that. But once they start shooting pepper spray into a couple of our friend's houses and then they tell us to go inside, that's when it gets a little problematic. 'cause like, hey, where do we go, my whole house is pepper sprayed?' He spoke more on when it got 'real' between the students and the cops. 'I was in the second floor of my house just watching everything happen. And them basically chasing down Dayton students and students in general. I thought that was pretty confusing. I was, you know, really just worried for everyone's safety,' said Mulvihill. His suggestions for next year included keeping the mounted police and the street shut down. He shared thoughts of finding safer ways of dispersing crowds. 2 News has reached out to UD Police for comment but hasn't heard back. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Detroit Cop Allegedly Groomed His 12-Year-Old Stepdaughter Via Text Messages, But It Gets Worse
A Detroit police officer just got exposed for sharing inappropriate messages with his 12-year-old stepdaughter. Now, he could mess around and go to prison. Brandyn Harris toldFOX 2 News he was notified of a series of concerning text messages in his daughter's phone sent to her from her stepfather, Detroit Police Officer Earl Anderson. At first the messages seemed fairly normal, asking the girl what games she played and inviting her to play Sims FreePlay. However, things got creepy very fast. 'If u wanna keep texting u will have to keep our conversation between me and u. On some friendly type stuff?' read a message from Anderson. The girl replied, informing Anderson that her father goes through her phone. 'Oh lol. Well delete these messages. If u figure something out let me know… We going to take a family trip soon too,' Anderson said in response. The report says the more messages from the officer offered to get the girl a second phone and encouraged her to make a new number or a 'safe line' to text with him on. 'U can be real with me. I don't care if u curse or be ur self. I won't tell ur people. I'm gonna treat u like ur grown ur mature enough. How u feel about that?' the officer said in another message. The girl's father, Harris, told FOX 2 his daughter got a weird feeling from the exchange and reported the messages to her aunt. Harris found the messages to be the likes of 'grooming,' and told reporters he brought them the department. Police Chief Todd Bettison said Anderson was suspended immediately, the report says. Anderson was also charged with one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes and being held on a $200,000 bond, the report says. 'Just be aware. Check them phones,' Harris urged parents, viaFOX 2. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
