A young police officer was allegedly stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver after she stopped a male cyclist who wasn't wearing a helmet. The female constable, aged in her 20s, was stabbed and punched outside a home in Kooringal, in Wagga Wagga in southeastern NSW, just before 2pm on Friday. Police said the alleged incident unfolded after the officer tried to stop a 31-year-old man riding a bike without a helmet. She was allegedly punched multiple times in the head before she was stabbed in the arm and the abdomen with a small screwdriver. The officer was treated by paramedics at the scene before she was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a stable condition. She was also checked for suspected fractures to her fingers and a head injury. The man was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station.

Local police arrived to find the body of a 65-year-old man inside the home. A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to a police station. He has not been charged. The two men were believed to know each other, investigators said on Saturday. Police set up a crime scene as they forensically examined the property after launching an investigation into the death. Detectives from the New South Wales homicide squad were helping local officers investigate the incident. Police are expected to provide an update on the investigation on Saturday afternoon.
