DNA testing links suspect to several break-ins in south end of Winnipeg
DNA evidence was used to help identify and arrest a man in connection with several break-ins in Winnipeg this year. Winnipeg police arrested a 33-year-old man earlier this month in connection with the break-ins and property thefts at several addresses in the Windsor Park and South St. Vital neighbourhoods in March. All three break and enters took place on March 24 in apartment buildings. The first one took place in the 500 block of St. Anne's Avenue, where suspects broke into the mailboxes, causing $2,000 in damages. Mail and three bicycles were stolen from the basement parking garage. Two other break-ins occurred in the 200 block of Beliveau Road, where mail was stolen from tenant mailboxes. Another break-in took place in the 100 block of Worthington Avenue, where tenant storage lockers were broken into. Police said an undetermined amount of property was stolen and $1,600 in damage was caused. Police said a DNA sample was collected at one of the scenes and matched the suspect's profile on the convicted offender index of the National DNA Data Bank. He was arrested on Aug. 1 on the strength of a DNA warrant and a blood sample was obtained, which police said linked him as a suspect in the break-ins. The suspect was arrested on Monday again without incident in the 300 block of Kennedy Street, with police also seizing a pocket knife. He was charged with four counts of break and enter, possession of a weapon and breach of recognizance. He was detained in custody. None of the charges have been proven in court.
