AI transforming healthcare leaders' roles in Brunei
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Around the world, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way healthcare is delivered; enabling earlier diagnoses, supporting clinical decision-making, personalising treatments and improving efficiency across health systems. Brunei is no exception, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Dr Rafidah Gharif said.
Initiatives such as BruHealth 5.0, with its integration of AI-powered features, are already setting the stage for a more proactive, data-driven and patient-centred healthcare system, she said.
This aligns closely with Brunei Vision 2035, to create a dynamic, sustainable and high-quality healthcare sector that meets the needs of the people, Rafidah said as the guest of honour at the 3rd Brunei Medical, Dental and Allied Health Students Conference on Sunday.
As future healthcare professionals, she iterated, 'Your role will not only be to understand and utilise these technologies, but also to ensure that innovation is balanced with compassion, ethics and patient trust.
'Conferences like this give us the opportunity to explore both the potential and the challenges of AI, so that we can harness its benefits while safeguarding the human values that are at the heart of healthcare.'
She commended the Brunei Medical Students' Association (BMSA) for their hard work, creativity and dedication in putting the event together.'
From engaging workshops and panel discussions to the research and BruHealth competitions, she said, 'You have created a platform that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and the sharing of ideas across disciplines.
'Such initiatives not only strengthen our healthcare community, but also nurture the leadership and problem-solving skills needed for the future.' This year's conference was held under the theme 'Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare' reflecting the growing relevance of AI in global healthcare systems and the importance of preparing Brunei's healthcare sector to embrace innovative medical technologies.
Around 80 Bruneian students and professionals from medicine, dentistry, nursing and allied health sciences attended the one-day conference aimed at enhancing and exchanging medical and clinical knowledge and skills between Bruneian healthcare students through a formal interactive platform.
It provided a stage for Bruneian students to present their research projects, developing crucial skills in public speaking, presenting, and critical analysis as well as support the progression of academia and contribute to Brunei Vision 2035 of producing highly skilled citizens and offer BMSA members experience in conference management, academic review and editorial processes.
Among the highlights was the Research Presentation Segment where Bruneian students presented their original research projects to a panel of judges.
The conference concluded with the prize presentation of Best Oral Presentation awarded to Wan Hana Syabrah Lylia Md Kassim while the award for Best Poster Presentation went to Aina Batrisya Roy.
