Ford reveals $30k starting price for new budget-friendly EV range

Ford plans to start rolling out its new family of affordable electric vehicles in 2027, including a midsize pickup truck with a target starting price of $30,000 (R532,446), the company said on Monday as it aspires to the cost efficiency of Chinese rivals. The new midsize four-door pickup will be assembled at the carmaker's Louisville, Kentucky, plant. Ford is investing nearly $2bn (R35,494,760,000) in the plant, which produces the Escape and Lincoln Corsair, retaining at least 2,200 jobs, it said. Chinese carmakers such as BYD have streamlined their supply chain and production system to produce EVs at a fraction of the cost of Western carmakers. While the vehicles have yet to enter the US market, Ford CEO Jim Farley said they set a new standard that companies such as Ford must match. "I can't tell you with 100% certainty this will all go right," Farley told a crowd at Ford's Louisville assembly plant on Monday, noting past efforts by US carmakers to build affordable cars had fizzled. "It is a bet. There is risk." Ford has been developing its affordable EVs through its skunkworks team filled with talent from EV rivals Tesla and Rivian. The California-based group, led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke, has set itself so much apart from the larger Ford enterprise that Farley said even his badge could not get him into its building for some time. EVs sold for an average of about $47,000 (R834,545) in June, JD Power data showed. Many Chinese models sell for $10,000 (R177,562) to $25,000 (R443,907). Affordability is a top concern for EV shoppers, auto executives have said, and the global competition for delivering cheaper electric models is heating up.

New Delhi: The employment-linked incentive (ELI) scheme represents the second step after the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in the direction of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, Labour Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya has stressed. The ELI scheme will provide financial support to employers, enabling them to generate additional employment, particularly for the minister described the initiative as a win-win for both employers and job a total outlay of Rs99,446 crore, the ELI scheme aims to create over 3.5 crore jobs across the country over a two-year period. During a high-level virtual meeting of state labour ministers and state industry ministers, he cited KLEMS data, published by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), highlighting that over 17 crore employment opportunities were generated during the last decade, according to a Ministry of Labour and Employment statement. This, he noted, is a reflection of the significant economic progress made by the country, particularly driven by robust growth in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and services. DrMandaviyaemphasised that this momentum must be sustained and further accelerated through schemes like ELI, which are designed to create quality jobs, deepen formalisation, and support inclusive development. 'Labour and industry are two sides of the same coin,' the Minister said, adding that both must work in close coordination for the greater good of the nation's workforce and economy. He assured participants that procedural formalities under the scheme have been kept simple to ensure ease of access and encourage wide participation. The Union Minister also urged state ministers to actively promote the scheme through media briefings, television and radio interviews, and other outreach platforms.

Gulf markets rebound amid Israel-Iran conflict

TNN & Agencies Doha Stock markets in the Gulf ended higher on Monday, recovering some of their losses from previous sessions when they were jolted by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) general index closed Monday's trading higher by 177.880 points, or 1.73 percent, a day after falling more than 3 percent to close at 10,464.800 points. During the session, 239,968,300 shares, valued at QR566,446 million were traded in 32,908 transactions across all sectors. Saudi Arabia's benchmark index advanced 1.3 percent, led by a 1.5 percent rise in Al Rajhi Bank and a 6.9 percent jump in ACWA Power Company. The upward trend mirrored similar movements in both Asian and European markets, where a temporary improvement in sentiment was bolstering investor appetite, said Osama Al Saifi, Managing Director for MENA at Traze. 'This optimism was partly fuelled by positive economic data from China, which showed an acceleration in retail sales despite US tariffs,'he said. Dubai's main share index added 0.8 percent, with utility firm Dubai Electricity and Water Authority rising 2.2 percent. In Abu Dhabi, the index closed 0.2 percent higher. Outside the Gulf, Egypt's blue-chip index inched 0.1 percent higher, helped by a 1.4 percent rise in Commercial International Bank. On Sunday, the index fell 4.6 percent marking its biggest intraday fall in about 14 months.

Andhra govt removes Kadapa mayor over violation of rules

VIJAYAWADA/KADAPA: The Andhra Pradesh government has removed Kothamaddi Suresh Babu from the Kadapa Mayor post, accusing him of violating municipal rules to benefit his family's business. In its order ( 446) on Wednesday, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department claimed Suresh Babu violated the GHMC Act, 1955, by awarding civil works contracts worth Rs 55.64 lakh to Vardhini Constructions, a company owned by his wife, Jayasree, and son, Amaresh. The controversy kicked off when Kadapa MLA Madhavi Reddappagari filed a complaint with the Vigilance and Enforcement Department, flagging what she called 'huge irregularities' in Kadapa's municipal contracts. The department's probe revealed that Vardhini Constructions, registered as a Class-V category contractor in 2023, bagged 10 projects under Suresh Babu's watch. Seven of these, including laying CC roads and desilting storm drains in the 12th and 29th divisions, were completed, netting Rs 33.65 lakhs. Three other contracts, like CC road works in Buddayapalli, are still pending. The State government says this setup breaches Section 22-1(h) of the GHMC Act, which forbids elected members or their kin from having stakes in municipal contracts, labelling it a clear conflict of interest. Suresh Babu, a YSRCP leader in his second mayoral term since 2021, got a show-cause notice on March 24, 2025. In his May 7 response, he claimed he didn't know about the contracts, which were under Rs 10 lakhs and handled by the Municipal Commissioner, not the council.
