Former Chicago Cubs MVP Kris Bryant Diagnosed With Career-Altering Disease
Former Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant's injury-plagued Colorado Rockies tenure just took another turn for the worse. The Rockies placed Bryant, the 2016 NL MVP, on the injured list Monday with lumbar degenerative disc disease. According to the Rockies expect Bryant to return at the end of his IL stint. Advertisement According to the Cleveland Clinic, degenerative disc disease — which the clinic notes is not actually a disease but a condition — causes the spinal discs to wear down. It is unclear if the condition is related to the various back injuries that limited Bryant to -1.1 bWAR and 159 games from 2022-24. Bryant has hit .154 with no home runs, an RBI and a staggeringly bad .400 OPS through 11 games. This marks the 33-year-old's ninth injured list stint since joining the Rockies in March 2022. Colorado Rockies designated hitter Kris BryantIsaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images It's another frustrating blow for Bryant, a four-time All-Star with the Cubs from 2015-21. Bryant burst onto the scene in 2015 with 26 home runs and a 5.4 bWAR, earning Rookie of the Year honors and leading the Cubs to their first NLCS appearance in over a decade. Advertisement The next season, Bryant hit a career-high 39 home runs and tallied a league-high 7.3 bWAR. Most important, he hit .308 with three homers, five doubles and a .923 OPS in 17 playoff games, carrying the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908. Bryant hit .269 with two solo home runs in the seven-game World Series victory over Cleveland. Although the Cubs never won another pennant with Bryant, they can't blame those playoff struggles on him. The 2013 No. 2 pick remained in Chicago through the 2021 trade deadline, totaling a .279 average, 160 homers, 465 RBIs and a 28.0 bWAR. The Cubs dealt Bryant to the San Francisco Giants in July 2021, and he mashed seven homers and posted a .788 OPS in 51 games for the NL West champions. Advertisement Bryant has three seasons and $81 million remaining on his contract after this year. He also owns a full no-trade clause. In pics: The architectural majesty of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, now open
A 10 from every angle… The Jumeirah Beach Hotel first opened its doors in 1997, it was joined by the iconic 'seven-star' Burj Al Arab in 1999 – but 'the nautical trilogy' had to wait another 26 years before receiving its third act. Explore the hotel in the gallery below 3 of 12 The design of the hotel was inspired by 'ultra-yachts' according to architect Shaun Killa It's a building designed with sustainability, front-of-mind With no compromise on the resort's leisure facilities and luxurious surrounds The design was created to be 'subtle, simple, and elegant' according to Killa And decorated with the highest standards of finishings Panoramic windows let the views do the talking The building's balconies, for example, have been designed to create shade cover that reduces energy consumption by up to 40 per cent. Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab was designed to blend with and enhance the views two legacy hotels next door. Stunning sunset views come as standard A myriad of iconic landmark frames Check out our guide to the leisure and entertainment facilities at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab. Art is everywhere in Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab Now, with the opening of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab this month, the gleaming white wave and sail ensemble is complete. Talking about the concept behind his design for the hotel, visionary architect Shaun Killa (one of the minds behind the Museum of the Future, Dubai Opera, and Jumeirah Burj Al Arab) describes the engineering marvel as being 'Inspired by the world's ultra-yachts, we aimed to evoke the sensation of being on water through the building's curvatures, much like a yacht setting sail'. It's reflective of that sort of effortless aesthetic – fluid lines, and soothing arches – that requires inhuman effort in the design phases, 'Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab is the subtle intervention of beauty that doesn't shout or try to be something that it is not' Killa says, 'To fit into Dubai's architecture scene, we ensured that it would remain timeless by not being overly articulated in form but rather subtle, simple, and elegant – allowing it to be discovered and admired.' It was designed to enhance the visual allure of the two legacy hotels next door, to frame, to blend, to embrace and contrast. But just because it looks like a piece of art doesn't mean that any commitment to the science of sustainability was overlooked in its construction. The building's balconies, for example, have been designed to create shade cover that reduces energy consumption by up to 40 per cent.
