Sandbags placed at landslip area on Yercaud Ghat Road
After a landslip at the ninth hairpin bend on Yercaud Ghat Road on Tuesday, the Highways Department began placing sandbags at the site on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a landslip occurred at the bend, damaging the parapet wall and a section of the road, which temporarily halted traffic. However, officials conducted an inspection of the site and implemented necessary measures, allowing traffic to resume afterwards. Barricades and warning signs were placed near the affected area, advising motorists to navigate the bend with caution. Sandbags were transported to the site in lorries, and workers began stacking them in the area impacted by the landslip. The 48th Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show, which began on May 23, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, May 29. Since the road is frequently used by visitors travelling to Yercaud, officials said restoration will be completed soon without disrupting vehicle movement.

Traffic congestion on ghat road as tourists throng Yercaud for summer festival
Yercaud is witnessing a massive influx of tourists for the 48th Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show that was inaugurated on Friday. The much-awaited summer festival is drawing visitors from across the State, who arrived through the ghat Road in the Shevaroyan Hills. Popular attractions such as Anna Park, the venue for the flower and fruit show, the boat house, Pagoda Point, Gent's Seat, Lady's Seat, Rose Garden, Botanical Garden, Deer Park, and Shevaroyan Temple saw high footfall throughout the day. Hotels, eateries, and stalls selling snacks, tea, and ice creams did brisk business. As part of the festival, the Department of Animal Husbandry organised a dog show at the open auditorium, which received an enthusiastic response. The Department of Tourism hosted a semi-classical dance performance, while local dance and cultural programmes captured the attention of tourists. P. Dinesh, a visitor from Erode, said the misty and cool climate, accompanied by occasional drizzles, kept drawing tourists throughout the day. Local businesses reported a surge in activity. However, the increase in the number of visitors led to heavy traffic congestion along the ghat road, with vehicles lined up for many kilometres, disrupting many travel plans. Also, indiscriminate parking near the boat house affected movement of vehicles. Several visitors also complained about inadequate parking facilities and called for more police personnel to be deployed to manage traffic effectively. Officials announced that a boat race would be held on Monday, and a cricket match for media personnel was scheduled for Tuesday. Dramas, cultural shows, and dance performances would continue daily till May 29, the final day of the festival.

Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show to begin on May 23
The 48th Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show will begin at the hilltop on Friday and continue till May 29, featuring a variety of competitions, musical concerts, and vibrant cultural events. The Ministers will also inaugurate various exhibition stalls set up by departments including Agriculture, Forests, Tourism, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, and Sericulture, and distribute welfare assistance to beneficiaries. Collector R. Brindha Devi said the seven-day festival would feature a grand flower show organised by the Horticulture Department at Anna Park, showcasing 1.5 lakh flowers. There would also be fruit and vegetable exhibitions. Special floral displays would depict wildlife and notable landmarks like the Mettur Dam to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. Additionally, over 25,000 colourful flower pots would be used to attract tourists. She added that several events would be held as part of the festival, including a healthy child contest, traditional food competition, rangoli competition, boating competitions for tourists, pet dog exhibition, and cultural programmes. Various sports competitions, including football and cricket, would also be organised for youth. To entertain tourists visiting Yercaud, musical concerts and cultural events would be held on all days of the festival. The Collector had earlier reviewed the arrangements with all departments and instructed them to ensure that all amenities were in place for visitors. Police personnel will manage vehicle movement at the hilltop to prevent traffic congestion. During last year's festival, held from May 22 to 26, nearly two lakh people visited Yercaud — including one lakh who visited Anna Park, Rose Garden, Lake Park, and Botanical Garden, and 35,000 who visited the boathouse. This year, the number of tourists is expected to increase, as the district administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
