Yercaud Summer Festival and Flower Show to begin on May 23
Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Minister for Forests and Khadi, R.S. Rajakannappan, and Minister for Tourism, R. Rajendran, will inaugurate the festival at 4 p.m. in Yercaud. The Ministers will also inaugurate various exhibition stalls set up by departments including Agriculture, Forests, Tourism, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, and Sericulture, and distribute welfare assistance to beneficiaries.
Collector R. Brindha Devi said the seven-day festival would feature a grand flower show organised by the Horticulture Department at Anna Park, showcasing 1.5 lakh flowers. There would also be fruit and vegetable exhibitions. Special floral displays would depict wildlife and notable landmarks like the Mettur Dam to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. Additionally, over 25,000 colourful flower pots would be used to attract tourists.
She added that several events would be held as part of the festival, including a healthy child contest, traditional food competition, rangoli competition, boating competitions for tourists, pet dog exhibition, and cultural programmes. Various sports competitions, including football and cricket, would also be organised for youth. To entertain tourists visiting Yercaud, musical concerts and cultural events would be held on all days of the festival.
The Collector had earlier reviewed the arrangements with all departments and instructed them to ensure that all amenities were in place for visitors. Police personnel will manage vehicle movement at the hilltop to prevent traffic congestion.
During last year's festival, held from May 22 to 26, nearly two lakh people visited Yercaud — including one lakh who visited Anna Park, Rose Garden, Lake Park, and Botanical Garden, and 35,000 who visited the boathouse. This year, the number of tourists is expected to increase, as the district administration has made elaborate arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.

Tributes paid to Relangi on 115th jayanthi
Minister for Tourism, Culture and Cinematography Kandula Durgesh on Wednesday paid floral tributes to the statue of Telugu comedian, Relangi Venkataramayya (1910-70), at the banks of the river Godavari at Pushkar Ghat in Rajamahendravaram City. Relangi, is known for his myriad expressive performances in Telugu cinema. The day marked the 115th Jayanthi of Relangi, a Padma Shri awardee. He was born in Ravulapalem and passed away on November 27, 1970 in Tadepalligudem, erstwhile West Godavari district. Gujarat: Vadnagar to get Rs 17-crore multi-modal hub, CM Patel inspects progress
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the heritage city of Vadnagar to review the progress of key state and Central government development projects aimed at transforming the town into a major tourism hub. A highlight of the visit was the inspection of the Rs 17-crore Multi-Modal Transportation Hub and public plaza under construction opposite Vadnagar Railway Station. The facility, designed to connect the station with the town's major heritage attractions, will offer parking, an amphitheatre, a food plaza, rest areas, cafes, and landscaped pathways. Plans also include planting over 2,000 trees in the surrounding area. The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure high-quality work and better coordination between the Railways and the state Tourism Department to complete the project on schedule. Under the Centre's Swadesh Darshan scheme, Vadnagar's key sites — including Sharmishtha Lake, Tana-Riri Park, Latery Stepwell, Ambaji Kotha Lake, the fort wall, and surrounding ponds — are also undergoing upgrades to enhance the tourist experience. CM Patel noted that these developments align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for Vadnagar, his birthplace, as a world-class heritage destination. During the site visit, Tourism Secretary Dr. Rajendra Kumar briefed the Chief Minister on the project's progress. The review was attended by MLA K.K. Patel, Tourism Commissioner Prabav Joshi, Pilgrimage Development Board Secretary Ramesh Merja, Mehsana District Collector S.K. Prajapati, DDO Dr. Hasrat Jasmine, and other senior officials from the Tourism Department. Vadnagar holds immense historic and political significance as one of India's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, dating back over 2,500 years. It was an important center of trade and culture in ancient times, featuring prominently in Buddhist and Jain histories. Politically, Vadnagar gained renewed prominence as the birthplace of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, linking its rich heritage with contemporary national leadership. The town's archaeological sites, ancient stepwells, and fortifications reflect its storied past, making Vadnagar a symbol of India's enduring civilization and evolving democracy.

Nepal opens 97 remote peaks for free climbing to boost tourism
KATHMANDU: Nepal has opened nearly 100 peaks in its remote western region for free climbing to boost mountain tourism, according to officials. In a bid to attract climbers to less-visited areas, the Himalayan nation's government has waived the royalty for 97 peaks in Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces for the next two years. These mountains, ranging from 5,870 metres to 7,132 metres in altitude, are expected to draw tourists to areas with limited economic activity. "The aim is to bring more visitors to remote regions, create jobs and generate income for local communities," Himal Gautam, Director at the Department of Tourism, told PTI. He said the initiative will also help promote Nepal's unexplored mountain destinations. The government has also proposed making it mandatory for climbers attempting Mt Everest to first scale at least one 7,000-metre peak. The proposal, part of an amendment to the Tourism Act, has been sent to the Upper House for consideration and will require approval from both Houses before becoming law. Earlier in the year, Nepal had announced that the fee to scale the 8,848.86-metre Mt Everest will be raised from USD 11,000 to USD 15,000 per person, effective from September 1, 2025.
