Trent Williams not present for start of OTAs
Left tackle Trent Williams is the only veteran star not present for the start of the 49ers' voluntary Organized Team Activities. Williams is working out at his Houston gym before next month's mandatory minicamp. Advertisement "He's been around," coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday, via David Bonilla of "He was here at the beginning of — not OTAs — but Phase One [of the offseason program]. He hasn't been here in a couple of weeks but expect to see him soon." The surprise was Williams' participation in the start of the offseason program, something he doesn't typically do. Williams, 36, did not make the Pro Bowl in 2024, the first time that's happened in a season he's played since 2011. (He did not play in 2019.) Williams played only 10 games last season, with an ankle injury sidelining him for the final seven games.

Brock Purdy never considered skipping offseason work while waiting on extension
Brock Purdy said in January he wanted his contract extension completed by the start of the offseason program. It wasn't. Purdy signed his five-year, $265 million deal a month into the workouts. He told 95.7 The Game he never considered not participating in the voluntary work in absence of an extension. Advertisement "I think, for me, being here and getting better at football, I don't think that [missing time] was ever going to be a question for me," Purdy told the Bay Area radio station, via David Bonilla of "I wanted to be here, and continue to build off of what we've done the last couple of years, and not let the negotiations and the money get in the way of that. "I had faith that that was going to get done when it needed to, and obviously, I wouldn't have liked that to go right up until the season." In recent years, the 49ers completed deals with edge rusher Nick Bosa, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams shortly before Week 1. "That would have probably been a little bit more stressful and whatnot," Purdy said. "But coming here early in the offseason program, and getting around the guys, and getting on the field, and throwing, getting the timing down, getting to know guys, that is some crucial stuff for how the season turns out to be. "So, I knew from the get-go, whether the contract was done or not, that I was going to be here." The 49ers begin Organized Team Activities next week.

Brock Purdy calls his contract extension "a huge blessing"
Brock Purdy signed his five-year, $256 million extension on Wednesday. It was a relief to the 49ers quarterback to get the deal done in the offseason. "I have so much respect for everybody in this organization from the top down," Purdy said, via David Bonilla of "I think they know who I am and what I'm about. And I don't know if there was a narrative of Brock's going to take a pay cut because he's a nice guy or this or that, but for me, it's I play in the NFL. There's 32 starting quarterbacks, and those guys, it's not the easiest job in the world. Advertisement "And for me, with what I've done and everything, I could hang my hat on the fact that I've had success in this league, and I'm capable of leading an organization all the way to the end—the Super Bowl. I proved that." Purdy's deal has a new-money average of $53 million per year, and the six-year deal, from signing, has an annual value of $45.057 million. Purdy said in January he wanted a deal completed sooner than later. While it didn't get done before the start of the offseason program as hoped, it is signed before organized team activities begin. "Obviously, I was hopeful to get something done early," Purdy said. "It would have been nice to have it done going into the offseason program as a whole, but obviously, there's a process to it, and both sides have their views, and that's the whole point of negotiating. But, at the end of the day, I didn't want to lose sight of the main goal here, knowing that I'm going to be the quarterback of this team this year." The 49ers went 6-11 last season after Purdy was 17-4 as a starter his first two seasons. So, the team and its quarterback are looking for a rebound in 2025.
