Trent Williams not present for start of OTAs

NBC Sports29-05-2025

Left tackle Trent Williams is the only veteran star not present for the start of the 49ers' voluntary Organized Team Activities.
Williams is working out at his Houston gym before next month's mandatory minicamp.
'He's been around,' coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. 'He was here at the beginning of — not OTAs — but Phase One [of the offseason program]. He hasn't been here in a couple of weeks but expect to see him soon.'
The surprise was Williams' participation in the start of the offseason program, something he doesn't typically do.
Williams, 36, did not make the Pro Bowl in 2024, the first time that's happened in a season he's played since 2011. (He did not play in 2019.)
Williams played only 10 games last season, with an ankle injury sidelining him for the final seven games.

Seth Rollins on why Caleb Williams will have better Year 2 than Jayden Daniels

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be compared for the duration of their NFL careers. The first and second overall picks, respectively, have all of the talent and potential to thrive and be the face of the league for the long term. But while Daniels had an easy-going rookie season -- en route to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors -- Williams dealt with adversity and still faces plenty of criticism after just one year. Advertisement During a recent appearance on the "Up & Adams" show, WWE superstar (and noted Bears fan) Seth Rollins explained why he believes Williams will have a better 2025 season than Daniels. "I think Caleb Williams is going to have a better year," Rollins said. "I think last year was an aberration. I think you're going to see a little bit of a sophomore slump. I think people are going to be able to gameplan for (Jayden) better. ... I just think the second year is going to be more difficult. You look at C.J. had a great year, but compared to the rookie year, not quite as good. I think you're going to look at it and see a situation like that whereas expectations are going to be a little bit lower for Caleb, and I think he's going to be able to exceed those. Plus, he's playing in a system with Ben Johnson that's going to be curated better to him than what he was doing with Shane Waldron." While it's easy to deem Rollins a "superfan" defending "his" quarterback, he brings up a good point. A sophomore slump could potentially be in play for Daniels, who had a lights-out rookie season. Also, we haven't even glimpsed Williams' ceiling after his chaotic rookie season that featured incompetent coaching. Now with Ben Johnson in place, we should get a taste of what Williams can really bring to the field. There's no reason Williams and Daniels can't both be great -- and we could very well be witnessing the beginning of that -- but people love to compare and declare who's better. That's a question that wouldn't even be answered for several years. But with both Williams and Daniels in the NFC, they'll be seeing a lot of each other throughout their careers -- especially if their respective teams become perennial playoff teams. Advertisement Williams and Daniels will square off again for the second time in as many seasons when the Commanders host the Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 6. While Williams nearly won the first match -- before Tyrique Stevenson's blunder on a Hail Mary -- he'll have a chance to redeem himself and even the series with Daniels on Oct. 13. Report: C.J. Gardner-Johnson will participate in Texans' mandatory minicamp

Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson reported to the team facility Monday ahead of Tuesday's start of a two-day mandatory minicamp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC reports. Gardner-Johnson, who the Eagles traded to the Texans this offseason, skipped the team's voluntary offseason workouts to train on his own with his personal trainer. Advertisement 'I've really been like to myself," Gardner-Johnson told Wilson. "The week I was there, it was very, very closer than places I've been before. Because this is a brand-new organization, trying to be the first team to put a bull on the ring. I had to step back. I'm too much sometimes. I think coming off a Super Bowl, it's a little too much for guys who feel like they're at the top of their profession right now because of who they are. That's respectable. So, we had to step back and then start to humble up, because now I'm at the bottom of the mountain with a team that's never been to the top. So, I can't bring the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain. I can't do that. It's like an avalanche. I don't want to cause a cluster---.' Gardner-Johnson, 27, led the league in interceptions in 2022 with six and has 18 in his six-year career. He spent three seasons in New Orleans and was with the Eagles in 2022 and 2024 after a one-year stint in Detroit in 2023 that didn't go well. The trade from the Eagles took him by surprise. "I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business," Gardner-Johnson said. "'Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never!' [I] led the league in interceptions. What more do you want? Advertisement "People say, 'He's a hazard. He's this. He's that.' I never been no hazard, bro. They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one. I got three more championships in me. I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch." The Texans have never made the AFC Championship Game, but they won the AFC South and a playoff game each of the past two seasons.

Pro Bowler Logan Cooke gets $16M extension with Jaguars that makes him NFL's highest-paid punter

Associated Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville's Logan Cooke is now the NFL's highest-paid punter. Cooke has signed a four-year, $16 million contract extension with the Jaguars, according to a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because neither side released contract details. A second-team All-Pro selection in 2024, Cooke had been entering the final year of his second deal with the team. He had been scheduled to make $3 million in 2025 and now will get a raise after making his first Pro Bowl last year. It had been unclear how Jacksonville's new regime of general manager James Gladstone and coach Liam Coen would handle Cooke's contract situation. The Jaguars drafted Cooke in the seventh round from Mississippi State in 2018, and he's the team's longest-tenured player. Cooke, who will turn 30 next month, established career highs with a gross putting average of 49.4 yards and a net punting average of 44.8 yards last season. Cooke had ranked seventh in the league among punters in average contract value. He now tops the list ahead of Seattle's Michael Dickson, whose contract averages $3.67 million annually. Cooke has a net punting average of 43.5 yards, the highest career mark in the NFL since the statistic began being tracked in 1976. His career gross punting average of 47.4 yards is the highest in franchise history and the sixth best in the NFL since 1939. Cooke also has placed 41.8% of his punts inside the 20-yard line, the highest mark in team history. ___ AP NFL: recommended in this topic
