Israeli military says it is using advanced electronic warfare to intercept Iranian drones

Tel Aviv/Tehran, June 23 (UNI) Israel's military has revealed it is using advanced electronic warfare to intercept waves of Iranian drones, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate. The operations have been spearheaded by the IDF's 5114th Spectrum Battalion—a highly specialised unit within the Computer Service Directorate—tasked with detecting and neutralising aerial threats in real time, according to The Times of Israel. According to the IDF, troops of the CSD 'have played a significant role in the mission to defend against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from Iran toward the State of Israel.' The battalion has successfully blocked a wave of Iranian UAV incursions in recent days, forming a key pillar of the country's layered air defence network, it added. The unit's high-tech capabilities have proven vital as Iran increasingly turns to unmanned drones to probe and challenge Israeli defences. According to Israeli officials, Iran has launched more than 1,000 drones since hostilities began, targeting various locations across the country. Most have been intercepted by the Israeli Air Force, Navy, or electronic warfare teams, though some have managed to evade defence systems. Over the weekend, one drone managed to hit a home in the northern city of Beit She'an, causing minimal infrastructure damage, though no casualties were reported. The increased use of drones by Iran marks a shift from its traditional military tactics, moving away from proxy conflicts and towards more direct, targeted strikes. Its use of low-cost, difficult-to-detect weapons have been challenging Israel's advanced defence systems in new ways, prompting a rapid evolution in military response. In turn, Israel is scaling up its reliance on artificial intelligence and electronic countermeasures to keep pace. Military officials say the integration of AI into air defence systems is helping to reduce response times and improve accuracy as the conflict enters a more complex and dangerous phase.
