Ohio's Hospice to host grief support camp for kids and teens
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Applications for Ohio's Hospice Pathways of Hope Grief Counseling Center's Camp Pathways are now being accepted. The free camp is a one-day experience for children and teens ages 7 to 17. It is designed for those who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or significant loved one. It will be held at Camp Joy Outdoor Education Center in Warren County from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20. There will be professional grief counselors and trained volunteers who will help campers in their grieving journey. 'Camp Pathways creates a safe, supportive environment where young people can process grief while also enjoying typical camp activities,' said a spokesperson for Ohio's Hospice. 'This balanced approach helps children understand they're not alone in their grief journey.' Annual 5K Furry Skurry to benefit local pets in Miami Valley Camp activities will include group support sessions with peers who have also experienced loss. There will be outdoor activities including arts and crafts, swimming, a climbing wall and a ropes course. Campers will also be able to have a memorial service honoring loved ones. Ohio's Hospice is asking for volunteers to serve as companions for campers. There will be two children assigned to a volunteer for the day. The volunteer will be able to provide a safe space for conversation, play and emotional support. The registration deadline is Friday, June 6, for both campers and volunteers. Mutiple local schools receive Purple Star Award for supporting military families
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Several local schools were honored with a Purple Star Award recognizing them for their support of military families. Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced over 360 schools earned the award on Wednesday, April 16. Schools qualify by completing all the Purple Star Advisory Board required activities and a bonus activity. The school must have an on-staff Military Family Liaison who acts as a point of contact between military families and the school. As for bonus activities, the school can choose between multiple options. A military event that is separate from Veterans Day. A system to identify children who are in military families, but not necessarily because of military parents. (Children with siblings in service.) Host month of the Military Child activities in April. KinderCare offers free day of care for military families 'The Purple Star program is a wonderful way to showcase the many schools in Ohio that are going above and beyond to support their military communities,' said DeWine. 'Year after year, our Purple Star schools put in the time and effort to make sure military-connected students have the support they need to thrive.' Schools are able to renew their awards every three years. Currently there are over 700 active Purple Star schools in Ohio. 'These schools and their staff do incredible work connecting our state's military families with resources to help them be successful, both in school and in their service to our state and country,' said Dackin. 'I applaud their dedication to this important work.' Annual 5K Furry Skurry to benefit local pets in Miami Valley
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Humane Society of Greater Dayton's annual 5K Furry Skurry is returning Saturday, May 17. The event, which raises money to help local pets in the Miami Valley, will run from 8 a.m. to noon at St. Leonard in Centerville. The 5K walk/run will start at 8:30 a.m. The top finishers will win a $100 Runner's Plus gift card. LIST: Public invited to forums during NATO Assembly The event is more than just the race. There will be multiple fun and unique things to do at the event. Food Truck Frenzy: Enjoy a selection of local food trucks. 'Flea(less)' Market Shopping: Enjoy supporting local vendors. Free Pet Microchips: There is no registration required for this life-saving pet service. Frisbee Disc Stunt and Trick Show: The Performance Dogs of Ohio will be showing their spectacular skills. Interactive Farm Zone: The Learning Tree Farm will have a petting zoo present. Painted 'Pawjects' with Barstools and Brushstrokes: Your pet can enjoy making an art piece. Rainbow Bridge Memorial Garden: A place to honor pets who have died. The VIPP (Very Important People & Pets) Tent: An omelet station, an all-day open bar and a 'sWag' bag.
