DEI rollbacks prompt people powered Pride month in the Twin Cities
Pride month kicked off with a literal running start Sunday: a 5K Run/Walk from Utepils Brewing in Minneapolis. Twin Cities In Motion Ambassadors put on the event that donates a portion of profits to Twin Cities Pride's year-round programming. Amy Lippert Hoffman, from Blaine, is one of the hundred or so who took part. It's a show of support for her LGBTQ friends, she said. "I am out here support them, just letting them know they are loved and they are important to celebrate," said Lippert Hoffman. The recent political climate under President Trump's administration, cracking down on things like transgender rights, has left a dark cloud of fear for many in the community, Lippert Hoffman said. "I wake up everyday and I'm just so worried about my friends, and I see how much they are worried," she said. "They're scared and that makes me scared too." Trump's executive order banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs across the country saw a concurrent rollback of DEI initiatives from Target. Twin Cities Pride struck back, parting ways with the longtime sponsor. To fill the gap, Twin Cities Pride raised double the $50,000 that Target would have provided, all accomplished within a week. "We really increased our individual donations at the start of the year and I feel like people have been very motivated to really change, not only their shopping patterns, but their giving patterns, which has been really amazing to see," said Kelsey Alto, director of programming for Twin Cities Pride. New community partners and local small businesses have come forward following the loss of sponsors, Alto said. "All of the co-ops in the Twin Cities banded together to raise money for us," said Alto. A new, people powered pride, that Alto said stands strong in the face of adversity. "I think now more than ever that not only our community, but our small businesses in the Twin Cities are standing up and showing up for the pride community and for pride month," said Alto.

Hundreds gather for Gaudreau Family 5K run/walk
The Brief Hundreds turned out in a powerful tribute Saturday morning as the community came together for a heartfelt 5K run honoring the legacy of the Gaudreau brothers. The brothers were fatally struck by a car while they were riding their bikes in Oldmans Township last year. The driver was allegedly under the influence at the time of the accident. SEWELL, N.J. - Hundreds gathered to honor the two brothers killed while cycling in Salem County last year at the Inaugural Gaudreau Family 5K Run, to help raise funds for a playground for kids with disabilities, in honor of the pair. The backstory "This is great, we are bringing the hockey community and the running community together here in South Jersey and Philadelphia to celebrate Johnny and Matthew," said Dave Welsh, a local business owner and organizer of the event. Last year, Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau's lives were abruptly taken away after they were hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver as they were riding their bicycles in Salem County, New Jersey. Both pillars of the hockey community, with Johnny, taking his talent to the NHL. Big picture view "When you first heard this tragedy that occurred, it was so riveting and overwhelming, that anything that we could possibly do to help, we were right on board. We are big hockey fans, we loved everything about this event so, we figured we're gonna do it," says one of the participants. A chance for the community to come together to support the brothers, their family, and the overall cause, which was to raise funds to build a playground at a school in South Jersey for children with disabilities, in honor of the Gaudreau brothers. Gillian Kocher, who helped put on the event says, "This playground that they are building through the proceeds from this will be a kind of lasting impact. It will impact generations to come at Archbishop Damiano. I know that John and Matty really loved kids, they were personally involved in the school as well so, I think it really gives their family some comfort, that we can continue to do things that they would have done and do it in their honor."

Over 1,000 people support Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's family fundraiser with 5K run in South Jersey
The Gaudreau family is getting closer to their goal to fund an adaptive playground the late Johnny and Matthew wanted to see built in their home state of New Jersey. Over 1,000 people, a sign of that progress, showed out on Saturday for the Gaudreau Family 5K Run, Walk and Family Fun Day at Washington Lake Park in Gloucester County. Since Johnny and Matthew were killed by a suspected drunk driver near their home in Salem County, their family, including parents Jane and Guy, have been working to honor their legacy. The runners came to support the Gaudreau family during this tough time and to help raise money for a cause thats close to the family's hearts. A little rain didn't stop anyone. "It was emotional. It was great. I mean, earlier we had a rainbow which was a pretty neat blessing for the day," one runner said. Guy Gaudreau was among the runners in the field. He put on a brave face for the camera but admitted the days are still really hard for their family. "I get halfway and i wanna quit, and the boys voices get in my head and say, 'Dad you're not a quitter,'" Guy said. "Because that's not how I taught them, not to be quitters, but it's really emotionally draining for my wife and I." The family organized the event along with members of the hockey community. Jane previously told CBS News Philadelphia that Johnny and Matthew volunteered at Archbishop Damiano School in Westville and that the school is important to their family — that's where the playground would be built once funded. ADS, where Jane has worked for over 40 years, is a nonprofit school serving over 135 students with disabilities. But the playground is crumbling and not accessible to many in its current state. The event also included an auction of NHL memorabilia including signed jerseys from players around the league. "It's pretty incredible how two young men that my wife and I raised are that incredibly popular throughout the world, right?" Guy Gaudreau said. The family fun extended long after the running events were over. The day should get the family closer to their $600,000 goal, after entering Saturday having raised $400,000. contributed to this report.

Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau's family closer to reaching goal for NJ playground brothers wanted built
Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build Gaudreaus plan Family Fun Day in NJ to benefit playground Johnny and Matthew wanted to build One South Jersey community is preparing to come together to celebrate the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, the brothers who were killed by a suspected drunk driver in Salem County last August. The first Gaudreau Family 5K Run, Walk and Family Fun Day is set for the end of May, and the Gaudreau family is hoping for a big turnout. The Family Fun Day takes place May 31 at Washington Lake Park in Washington Township, Gloucester County, and promises food, games, face painting, dance performances and raffles. Johnny and Matthew's mother, Jane Gaudreau, stopped by CBS News Philadelphia to talk about the event. Jane said it's meant to celebrate her sons' lives and their commitment to give back to their community. The Gaudreau family will honor that mission by directing all event proceeds to the creation of an adaptive playground at Archbishop Damiano School in Westville, New Jersey. Dancers from Jane and Katie Gaudreau's All Star Dance studio perform in CBS Philadelphia's Great Hall. "The boys loved children, the boys loved fun," Jane says. "Archbishop Damiano School is a place where the boys had volunteered before, and it's a big part of our family life." ADS is a nonprofit school that provides services to more than 135 students with disabilities. The current playground at the school is crumbling and not accessible to all students. The school community is also a second family for the Gaudreaus. Jane has worked at the school for more than 40 years. John and Matthew volunteered there as kids. And even as a superstar in the NHL, John never forgot his roots: he started fundraising for the playground years ago. ADS is getting closer to raising the $600,000 needed for the adaptive playground. Jane says the school recently secured several more sizable donations. Dancers from Jane and Katie Gaudreau's All Star Dance studio perform in CBS Philadelphia's Great Hall. CBS News Philadelphia The Gaudreau family also says the upcoming event is a way to thank the community for its support. Katie Gaudreau, Johnny and Mathew's sister, joined her mother at CBS News Philadelphia. Dancers from Katie and Jane's All Star Dance studio will perform during the event. They visited our Great Hall during our morning shows to bust a move. "They really have been there for our entire family this year," Katie said. "I'm just so thankful for them, and I'm excited to celebrate them and everything they've done for us." The Gaudreau Family 5K Run, Walk and Family Fun Day will take place at Washington Lake Park on May 31, from 8 a.m. until noon. The run and walk are already sold out, but the Family Fun Day is free and open to all. There is also a sports memorabilia auction benefiting the playground and featuring several signed hockey jerseys, including an autographed Johnny Gaudreau NHL All-Star Game jersey and a signed Flyers jersey.
