Australian pop star covers Proclaimers song wearing Hibs top
Calum Hood, bassist of pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, shared his rendition of Sunshine on Leith whilst wearing a Hibernian FC jersey. Scottish fans reacted with pride in the comments section, with one calling the video 'a win for the Scots today' accompanied by Saltire emojis. READ MORE: Grangemouth closure 'nothing short of economic crisis', says Kate Forbes Others shared their own memories of the song, with one fan commenting: 'I think it's a universal Scottish child experience to well up hearing Sunshine on Leith.' Another added: 'As a Hibs supporter from Edinburgh, seeing Calum Hood wearing a Hibernian top and singing my grandad's funeral song was not something I ever anticipated and I am in fact sobbing.' The video was accompanied by a lengthy caption, in which Hood talked about his childhood links to The Proclaimers through his Scottish father David. @looseunit123 I remember being 8 years old. It was 8pm, or 10, or 12. Laying dormant in the bottom compartment of my metal framed bunk bed. My dad used to waltz home from the pub and sit outside in a camp chair under the tin roofed awning we had. He'd put The Proclaimers 'Sunshine on Leith' CD into our player and let it run all the way through. Sometimes twice. Harping and humming along like no tomorrow. The sound would crash through my window and set up camp in my small shipping container of a room. Guess I'm not sleeping for a couple more hours. If you asked me back then I'd probably say he did it because he was a little buzzed and wanted to let off steam from working long labored hours. But if you asked me now I'd say that it reminded him of home. I don't blame him, I do the same for both reasons and loose change. I think Sunshine On Leith was track 4 or 5. From then on it became his own. I won't ever associate this song with anyone but him. Flooding my CPU with pictures of his slight crooked smile on one side. Or the sound bite of his laugh where at the end the inflection of his pitch goes up just a touch. Or how he used to talk through his teeth whenever he was seething. All pretty much a carbon copy of what I do now. It makes me think of him as a child. Blue eyes and blonde hair weaving through the Scottish wind. It makes me wonder of what he was like when he was my age. What does he love? Who does he love? What's he afraid of? There's so many things I won't ever get to ask that version of him. It's hard now to sing the song without tearing up. In fact I'm tearing up now as I write this. Maybe it makes me feel closer to him. Maybe it humanizes him. Maybe I'm just emotional. A parent is likened to some sort of guardian angel. And although that maybe an unrealistic expectation as a 29 year old man I'm going to call him now and tell him he did a good job. I hope you have a song that reminds you fondly of someone. ♬ original sound - Calum Hood He wrote: 'My dad used to waltz home from the pub and sit outside in a camp chair under the tin roof awning we had.' "He'd put The Proclaimers' Sunshine on Leith CD into our player and let it run all the way through, sometimes twice, harping and humming along like no tomorrow.' Hood noted that he now believes his father's listening habits were related to a sense of homesickness for Scotland, rather than being 'a little buzzed' from the pub. The bassist wrote that the song makes him think of his dad as a child, 'blue eyes and blonde hair weaving through the Scottish wind'.

5 Seconds of Summer's Calum Hood Gives in to Heartbreak on Solo Debut ‘Don't Forget You Love Me'
5 Seconds of Summer bassist Calum Hood steps into the spotlight alone on his solo debut 'Don't Forget You Love Me,' an enthralling introduction that finds him walking a tightrope between self-reflective (and at times self-destructive) despair and relieving reconciliation. The record will appear on his debut album Order Chaos Order, out June 13, which emerged from a kindred dichotomy. 'This album was made in a tumble dryer of knowing and not knowing. I started out with a vision — order — but quickly became overwhelmed by the process — chaos. Eventually, I learned to embrace both, and that balance became the heart of the record,' Hood shared in a statement. 'And I know that it's hard to see/Every version of me/But it's not the same as everything you ever thought/I ever could/But never would be,' he sings. 'But I've tried enough to call you/and I'm scared that you'll pick up/cause I know that I don't want you to/cause baby I would have to own up/To everything oh everything I've done to you/and all I did to us.' Hood has served as a primary songwriter in 5SOS since their earliest records, the Unplugged and Somewhere New EPs released in 2012. But until now, he hasn't sought to break away from the band. The closest he came to a solo release was the one-off demo 'Bad Dreams' that he posted and swiftly deleted on X (then Twitter) in the dead of the night back in 2013, presumed to be a scrapped 5SOS album cut. Hood's collaborators on the 10-track album include Day Wave's Jackson Phillips, David Burris, and TMS (Lewis Capaldi, Niall Horan). Jack LaFrantz, who was a primary songwriter on Benson Boone's Fireworks & Rollerblades, is a co-writer on 'Don't Forget You Love Me.' Drummer Ashton Irwin was the first to go solo in 2020 with Superbloom, which he followed up with Blood on the Drums in 2024. Frontman Luke Hemmings followed in 2021 with When Facing the Things We Turn Away From and in 2024 with Boy. Hemmings — who has previously expressed that Hood was the first person in his personal life to inspire him as a songwriter — told Rolling Stone last year that each member being allowed to explore musical journeys on their own is key to keeping 5SOS alive. 'I know solo projects can be scary for fans of bands, but for me it's the way that the band can live on forever,' he said. 'In my eyes, that's the way I see it.' It's a type of catharsis. In a statement, Hood shared: 'There are things I've never been able to sing about in the band — my upbringing, my family, the places life has taken me. This album is about laying those things to rest and allowing listeners to connect in their own way.' 5 Seconds of Summer's Michael Clifford Launches Solo Career With ‘Cool'
Michael Clifford, the lead guitarist of Australian pop-rock outfit 5 Seconds of Summer, has become the latest member of the band to embark on a solo career, with debut single 'Cool' launching his new journey. The track follows in much the same vein as what fans of 5 Seconds of Summer may have expected from a Clifford solo venture, with 'Cool' capturing the polished rock sound he's become associated with and pairing it with more introspective songwriting. 'I've been deliberating on this music long enough, so I can't wait for everybody to hear it— and 'cool' is just the beginning of what's to come. 'I want this project to make people smile,' he added. 'I'm just out here doing a bunch of sidequests. Now that I'm a dad, everything other than that feels like a sidequest!' Released via the pop-punk label Hopeless Records, 'Cool' is a taster of Clifford's forthcoming debut album, SIDEQUEST, which will be detailed at length in the near future. The track was co-written by Clifford alongside his bandmate Calum Hood, and features co-production from acclaimed musicians JT Daly and Andrew Goldstein. It also comes accompanied by a Bobby Hanaford-directed music video. 5 Seconds of Summer first formed in Sydney, Australia in 2011 and released their self-titled debut album in 2014. All five of the band's albums have peaked atop the Australia ARIA charts, while only 2020's Calm and 2022's 5SOS5 prevented the same feat on the Billboard 200, with the records reaching a very respectable peak of No. 2. Members of the six-time ARIA Award-winning group began launching solo careers following the release of Calm, with drummer Ashton Irwin releasing his Superbloom album in 2020, with second album Blood on the Drums arriving in July 2024. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Luke Hemmings would follow suit in 2021 with his debut album When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, following it up with the Boy EP in April 2024. Currently, bassist Hood is the only member of the group to have not issued solo material, though he has been active in the fields of songwriting, composition, and production.
