2 killed, 1 nabbed in separate ops in Maguindanao

Two people were killed while another was arrested in separate operations against illegal drugs and selling of firearms in Maguindanao provinces. Police and military personnel were about to serve an arrest warrant against a man who is facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act in Datu Montawal, Maguindanao del Sur. However, the operating team engaged the subject of the warrant and his companions in an exchange of fire, which resulted in the death of one of the suspects and the arrest of his companion. The subject of the warrant escaped and is being pursued, as of this writing. Seized from the suspects who were slain and arrested were a .45 pistol, a magazine, ammunition, and sachets of suspected shabu. Meanwhile, troops of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-2, personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and other police units conducted an entrapment operation against the alleged selling of firearms in Barira, Maguindanao del Norte. The target of the operation was identified as alias 'Rokkie,' who is facing charges for murder, frustrated murder, and robbery. Instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly opened fire, prompting authorities to return fire. The suspect was killed during the encounter. According to the 6th Infantry Division (6ID), the operation was launched after an informant tipped authorities that the suspect was allegedly planning to sell firearms in the area. During the operation, authorities seized several firearms, including an M16 rifle, M14 rifle, several magazines, ammunition, a grenade, and a caliber .45 pistol. 6ID added that the suspect was said to be part of an armed group allegedly involved in illegal activities, including gun-for-hire, robbery-holdup, and illegal drug trade in the region. 'Ang mga matagumpay na operasyong ito ay sumasalamin sa matatag na ugnayan at koordinasyon ng AFP at PNP. Patuloy nating pinapaigting ang suporta sa pagpapatupad ng batas upang gawing ligtas ang ating mga komunidad mula sa banta ng ilegal na droga, armas, at armadong grupo. Binabati ko ang ating mga tropa sa kanilang katapangan at mabilis na aksyon,' 6ID Commander, Major General Donald Gumiran, said. (These successful operations represent the firm connection and coordination between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. We will continue to intensify our support to enforce the law in order to safeguard our communities from the threat of illegal drugs, firearms and armed groups. I commend our troops for their courage and prompt action.) — GMA Regional TV News

Alleged NPA top leader nabbed in CDO

Government forces arrested an alleged high-ranking leader of the New People's Army (NPA) in Barangay Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City on Thursday, June 5, 2025. The military identified the suspect as Edward Flores, also known by his aliases Cess, Ruby, Rafa, and Ramon. According to reports, the suspect allegedly served as secretary general of the NPA's Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR), which operates under the jurisdiction of the 6th Infantry Division (6ID). 'Once a powerful figure, Flores' group has significantly weakened due to sustain decisive military operations that dismantled vertical platoon and neutralization of majority of its leaders and remaining members,' 6ID said. The military added that the suspect also allegedly held positions previously such as Regional Urban Committee secretary, secretary of the dismantled Guerilla Front Tala, and spokesperson of the FSMR. 'The arrest of Edward Flores marks another critical blow to the already crumbling structure of the communist insurgency within the area of responsibility of the 603rd Brigade. In fact, we have already filed multiple cases against him for acts of terrorism and for recruiting vulnerable youth into armed rebellion. His capture is a major setback to their ranks and operations,' 603rd Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Michael Santos, said. Among the charges faced by the suspect include murder filed in Tagum City, Davao del Norte; multiple attempted homicide filed in Surallah, South Cotabato; murder filed in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, and violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act. During the operation, authorities confiscated a Colt .45 pistol, a fragmentation grenade, and a smartphone from the suspect. "We will remain determined in our efforts to significantly reduce the capabilities of these terrorist criminals to harass innocent civilians. As the CTG continues to lose key leaders and more members, we will continue our pursuit until they are defeated. With the support of our civilian population and partner stakeholders under the Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (TF-ELCAC), we will not rest until this decades-long problem is resolved," 6ID Commander, Major General Ronald Gumiran, said. —GMA Regional TV News

Ex-rebel bomb expert surrenders in Maguindanao del Norte — PH Army

An alleged former rebel bomb expert has surrendered to the government in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte, the Philippine Army's 6th Infantry Division (6ID) said in a statement Friday. Commander of 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT) Brigadier General Jose Vladimir Cagara said the military will not divulge the identity of the ex-rebel for security reasons. "Ang 35-anyos na dating rebelde ay boluntaryong sumuko bunsod ng matinding takot sa kanyang kaligtasan dulot ng sunod-sunod at pinaigting na operasyon ng militar laban sa kanilang grupo," the 6ID said, adding that his surrender happened on Wednesday. (The 35-year-old former rebel voluntarily surrendered due to extreme fear for his safety amid the continuous and intensified military operations against his group.) "Kasabay ng kanyang pagbabalik-loob, isinuko rin ng dating bomb expert ang mga kagamitang pandigma na kinabibilangan ng isang Uzi 9mm submachine gun at isang 60mm improvised explosive device (IED)," it added. (Along with his surrender, the former bomb expert also surrendered his war equipment which includes an Uzi 9mm submachine gun and a 60mm improvised explosive device (IED).) Major General Donald Gumiran, commander of 6ID, lauded the decision of the former rebel. "Sa halip na maghasik ng karahasan, mas pinili niyang tahakin ang landas ng kapayapaan. Ito ay patunay na hindi pa huli ang lahat para sa sinuman na nagnanais ng pagbabago at bagong simula," he added. (Instead of sowing violence, he chose to walk the path of peace. This is proof that it is not too late for anyone who wants change and a new beginning.) — VDV, GMA Integrated News
