Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said eatery operators within MBKS areas who plan to offer promotions or packages during the festival period can forward the relevant information to the MBKS for marketing purposes. He said MBKS will help them promote in a bid to prevent some operators from suffering a potential drop in business volume during the festival. 'Kuching Festival Food Fair is one of the most popular local events and MBKS, as the organiser, wants to see all F&B industry players benefit from it. 'We aspire to give a boost to the F&B industry during the festival,' he told his Facebook live 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday. Wee noted that some eatery operators may have not successfully applied for a booth, or they do not have enough manpower to run a stall at the forthcoming festival. Nonetheless, he said they can do promotions at their respective outlets to support the festival. 'For as long as you do special offers or promotions during the Kuching Festival Food Fair period, loop us in and we will include your promotions in our promotional flyers so that more people learn about it.' The Mayor said MBKS will notify major restaurants, hotels and eatery operators of this move, enabling them to submit relevant information. 'We look forward to the participation of all, and together we can make this year's Kuching Festival Food Fair even more inclusive and significant,' he added. Meanwhile, Wee invites people from all walks of life to join the 2025 722 Walk, which will begin at 6am from the MBKS Complex. Participants are expected to take a stroll along Jalan Padungan and all the way to the Kuching Waterfront, showing their love for a united Sarawak. According to him, the walk will be about three kilometres, making it suitable for people of all ages. 'We encourage participants to don red, yellow and black shirts, which are the colours of our state flag,' said Wee. Admission is free and the orgniser will not issue t-shirt. Everyone is welcome to be a part of the 722 Walk. 'No registration is needed and we do not do a head-count. All we want is for more people to join in the walk,' he said. The Mayor said a Zumba session will be held on Aug 2 in conjunction with the Kuching Festival Food Fair, and interestd individuals are advised to register via the iPeople App. 2025 Kuching Festival Food Fair lead wee hong seng

MBKS approves venue for 722 event, urges unity and mutual respect
Wee says there was no need for organisers to raise the issue of a delayed response on social media. KUCHING (July 11): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has approved a permit for the 'Sarawak Independence Day and Tribute to Tok Nan' event to be held at Song Kheng Hai Ground. Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng confirmed this in a statement today, saying there was no need for organisers to raise the issue of a delayed response on social media. 'Let us remember that we are all 'Anak Sarawak' (Sarawakians), and we all share a common love and pride for Sarawak. Let us move forward together in unity and mutual respect, especially during occasions meant to celebrate our shared heritage,' Wee said. He also addressed criticism from event organiser and Saya Anak Sarawak founder, Peter John Jaban, who had earlier accused MBKS of being unresponsive and jeopardising plans to honour Sarawak's Independence Day and former chief minister, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem (Tok Nan). 'I take note of the recent public remarks made by the organising chairman of the 722 Gathering and Founder of Saya Anak Sarawak regarding the perceived lack of response from my office which, according to him, has jeopardised the event to honour Sarawak's Independence Day. 'With all due respect, I believe it is unfair to shift the blame solely to MBKS, suggesting that the gathering may be cancelled due to our delayed response. 'As all parties are aware, MBKS, together with DBKU (Kuching North City Commission) and MPP (Padawan Municipal Council), had only held a joint press conference yesterday (July 10) on the 722 Walk in conjunction with Sarawak Day, and the route and logistics of that event were only finalised at that point. 'As such, our office was not in a position to give an immediate reply earlier, as the venue and arrangements for the 722 Walk were still under discussion,' said Wee. Earlier, Peter had voiced his disappointment over the council's delayed response, claiming it threatened the success of the event. 'We, the organisers of the upcoming public gathering scheduled for July 22, 2025, express our deep disappointment and concern over the continued silence from the office of the Mayor of Kuching South regarding our official request to utilise Song Kheng Hai Rugby Ground as a venue for this meaningful and significant occasion,' he said in a statement. 722 MBKS Peter John Jaban Song Kheng Hai Ground Tok Nan wee hong seng

The 722 Walk, taking place on July 22, will bring together the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) for the first time ever in a joint event. The three-kilometre walk, which kicks off at 6am from the MBKS headquarters and ends at the Kuching Waterfront, is expected to draw over 1,000 participants, including council staff and the public. Kuching South Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, the key driver behind the initiative, described the event as more than a walk – it is 'a celebration of history, health, heritage, hope, and unity.' 'We understand the main state-level celebration is in Miri this year, but that does not stop us from holding our own event here in Kuching. 'This walk is our way of celebrating Sarawak Day in a way that is inclusive, healthy, and full of Sarawakian spirit,' he told a press conference at MBKS headquarters today. Inspired by a casual discussion among council leaders, the 722 Walk was born out of a shared desire to engage the public meaningfully on a day that commemorates Sarawak's self-government on July 22, 1963. To foster greater youth engagement, Child Councils from all three local authorities will be joining the walk, promoting patriotism among the younger generation. No registration is required, and participants are encouraged to wear red, black, and yellow or Sarawak batik to reflect the occasion's spirit. The walk will also highlight Kuching's vibrant multiculturalism and long-standing harmony, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) of promoting good health and well-being. City Jogger Club (CJC) has come on board as a co-organiser, assisting with logistics and providing volunteers as marshals – a gesture hailed by Wee as 'a model for civic responsibility'. Also present at the press conference, Kuching North Datuk Bandar, Dato Hilmy Othman, expressed his support for the joint effort, crediting Wee's patriotic vision for uniting the councils. 'Celebrating this day together sends a powerful message about unity, not just among government agencies but also among the people of Kuching. 'This initiative promotes a healthy lifestyle while also reminding us of our shared past and future,' said Hilmy, adding that DBKU looks forward to hosting the 722 Walk next year as part of a rotating schedule. MPP Chairman Tan Kai echoed similar sentiments, stressing that local councils are best positioned to bring Sarawakians together at the grassroots level. He encouraged overseas Sarawakians to mark the day in their own way, 'even if it's just by flying the Sarawak flag or cooking Sarawak laksa.' The public is also encouraged to display the Sarawak flag proudly across homes and businesses on July 22 in a show of solidarity. Wee concluded by urging all Sarawakians to embrace the meaning of the day: 'Sarawak Day is not just a date on the calendar – it's a reminder of who we are and what we stand for.' 722 Walk DBKU inaugural Kuching MBKS MPP sarawak day
