Contraband worth over RM16.6mil seized in Sepanggar Port raids

KOTA KINABALU: Customs officials seized more than RM16.6mil worth of smuggled goods in three separate raids in May. The raids from May 14 to 29 saw frozen chicken, rice and alcohol confiscated at Sepanggar Port. Sabah Customs deputy director-general Siti Mang said that in the first raid on May 14, officials inspected a total of 33 shipping containers and found 659,856 litres of alcoholic beverages of various brands inside. 'They are worth RM3.97mil, with the unpaid duty and tax estimated at RM11.86mil,' she told a press conference here on Tuesday (June 10). On May 16, a container was raided, leading to the discovery of 28 tonnes of frozen chicken without import permits, valued at around RM326,760 including tax. Siti said the third raid on May 29 saw 150 tonnes of rice and glutinous rice being confiscated. '(The rice was) valued RM498,750 including tax,' she said, adding that all the contraband seized had been declared as other goods during shipping. Siti said the cases are being investigated under the Customs Act 1967. 'Smuggling of any sort causes economic losses to the country and poses a security threat," she said. She urged anyone with information on smuggling activities to inform the Customs Department at 1-800-88-8855, and said informants' identities would be kept confidential.

Carney meets with Trump to reset US-Canada relationship

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived at the White House for talks with Donald Trump in a bid to reset a relationship he said has been undermined by the US president's tariffs and talk of annexation. Mr Carney's Liberal Party won the 28 April election on promises to tackle Mr Trump and create a new bilateral economic and security relationship with the United States. It will be his first in-person meeting as prime minister with Mr Trump. Shortly before Mr Carney arrived, Mr Trump posted a message on social media. "I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney. I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH - Why is America subsidising Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things? We don't need their Cars, we don't need their Energy, we don't need their Lumber, we don't need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain. They, on the other hand, need EVERYTHING from us! The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence." Mr Carney, a 60-year-old ex-central banker with no previous political experience, was elected Liberal leader in March to replace Justin Trudeau, who had a poor relationship with Mr Trump. "It's important to get engaged immediately ... and I'm pleased to have the opportunity for quite a comprehensive set of meetings," Mr Carney told a press conference on Friday, adding he expected the talks to be difficult yet constructive. He played down the idea of immediate breakthroughs. "Do not expect white smoke out of that meeting," Mr Carney said, referring to the signal the Vatican sends to indicate a new pope has been chosen. Canada is the US' second-largest individual trading partner after Mexico, and the largest export market for US goods. More than $760 billion in goods flowed between the two countries last year, and while Canada has run a trade surplus of more than $60bn in the last two years, most of that stems from its status as the largest foreign supplier of oil to the US. Ahead of the meeting, the US Commerce Department reported Canada's goods trade surplus with the US narrowed to a five-month low in March, the month when Mr Trump's hefty tariffs on imported steel and aluminium took effect. Canadian exports to the US plunged by $3.7bn, the second-largest drop on record. Canadian data showed the drop in US exports was almost compensated by an increase to the rest of the world, as Canadian companies sought new markets. Mr Trump in March imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports and then slapped another 25% tariff on cars and parts that did not comply with a North American free trade agreement. On Sunday, Mr Trump said he would put a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the US, without giving details, in a potential blow to Canada's film industry.

Jesse Winker flashes some rare speed with a two-triple game to lead the Mets past Blue Jays

NEW YORK — Jesse Winker was holding his daughter during a postgame interview after helping lift the New York Mets to a comeback win Saturday night when he asked her if he was fast. Without hesitation, 4-year-old Wren nodded. She quickly nodded again when Winker asked if she's faster than him. 'Wren's Dad didn't know he was fast,' Winker said with a big smile. 'And I don't think he is fast.' But Winker hit two triples, including the tying two-run hit in the eighth inning, and also had a double in the Mets' 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. So, is Winker the new basepaths-blazing version of Lance Johnson or Jose Reyes for the Mets? 'No,' Winker said flatly. The 31-year-old Winker entered Saturday with just three regular-season triples in 760 career games, and he hadn't had one in a regular-season game since 2021 while with Cincinnati. But the triples against the Blue Jays were his third and fourth in his last 16 games dating to the start of the playoffs last October. The long-haired outfielder had RBI triples against Milwaukee in a wild-card series and Los Angeles in the NL Championship Series. 'Just put your head down and run as fast as you can,' Winker said. Winker's second triple could have been an inside-the-park home run. Blue Jays right fielder George Springer suffered lower back spasms after crashing into the wall in pursuit of the ball, but he got back to his feet, chased down the ball and threw it towards the infield to limit Winker to three bases. 'Initially, I thought it had a chance to get out — I probably should have been running harder out of the box,' Winker said. 'But once it ricocheted, I just wanted to run as fast as I could.' Winker also tripled with two outs in the fourth off Chris Bassitt, but was stranded when Mark Vientos struck out. The two-triple game was the first by a Mets player since Francisco Lindor did so on July 26, 2023. Still, Winker joined a select club by becoming the 17th player in team history with two triples in a game. Reyes holds the team record with 113 triples and eight two-triple games. Johnson, whose 21 triples in 1996 are the single-season team record, and Doug Flynn are the only other Mets players with a pair of two-triple games. 'It's crazy — crazy, no comment,' Winker said with a grin. 'Tired.'
