Contraband worth over RM16.6mil seized in Sepanggar Port raids
The raids from May 14 to 29 saw frozen chicken, rice and alcohol confiscated at Sepanggar Port.
Sabah Customs deputy director-general Siti Mang said that in the first raid on May 14, officials inspected a total of 33 shipping containers and found 659,856 litres of alcoholic beverages of various brands inside.
'They are worth RM3.97mil, with the unpaid duty and tax estimated at RM11.86mil,' she told a press conference here on Tuesday (June 10).
On May 16, a container was raided, leading to the discovery of 28 tonnes of frozen chicken without import permits, valued at around RM326,760 including tax.
Siti said the third raid on May 29 saw 150 tonnes of rice and glutinous rice being confiscated.
'(The rice was) valued RM498,750 including tax,' she said, adding that all the contraband seized had been declared as other goods during shipping.
Siti said the cases are being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
'Smuggling of any sort causes economic losses to the country and poses a security threat," she said.
She urged anyone with information on smuggling activities to inform the Customs Department at 1-800-88-8855, and said informants' identities would be kept confidential.

779 e-waste containers seized since 2023
A total of 779 containers containing electronic waste (e-waste) were seized up to May this year since 2023, with 583 of them inspected by the Department of Environment (DoE). Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, who has taken over the responsibilities of the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, said 119 notices had been issued to importing companies to return the containers, in line with the Environmental Quality Act 1974. This, he said, led to 294 containers being sent back to their countries of origin. "This is in line with the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, which requires prior written consent from the DoE for all cross-border movements of scheduled waste, whether for import, export, transit or transshipment." Johari said in a written parliamentary reply. "Integrated operations of this nature will continue to be carried out to curb offences involving the illegal processing of imported e-waste." He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali (BN-Pekan) on measures to curb the illegal disposal of e-waste by unlicensed premises. Johari (BN-Titiwangsa) said the ministry remained committed to tackling crimes involving the illegal processing of smuggled e-waste. "The government is also stepping up efforts to combat illegal e-waste processing plants through integrated operations, such as Op Hazard 1.0 and 2.0, conducted nationwide in February and June this year." A total of 122 premises had been raided under the two operations. Op Hazard 1.0 targeted 53 premises and seized 9,356 tonnes of e-waste, while Op Hazard 2.0 targeted 69 premises, with 2,069 tonnes of e-waste seized. Johari said control mechanisms at border entry points were being strengthened, with enforcement enhanced in collaboration with agencies including the Customs Department, the DoE and port authorities. "This includes closer cooperation with international organisations such as the Basel Convention Secretariat, the Asian Network and Interpol to share information on ships suspected of carrying e-waste bound for Malaysian ports."

RCE Capital posts solid 1Q26 performance
PETALING JAYA: RCE Capital Bhd believes that its commitment to maintaining asset quality by actively monitoring its portfolio and credit exposure is key to ensuring long-term sustainability of its business. To strengthen competitive positioning, the group said it would continue to implement omnichannel marketing initiatives for enhanced customer experience and market reach expansion. Releasing its results for the first quarter ended June 30 (1Q26) for the financial year ending March 2026 (FY26), RCE Capital saw net profit slide by 14.3% year-on-year to RM26mil, despite the marginal growth in revenue to RM79.8mil. The group said the slightly better revenue was due to higher fee income from increased disbursements, before adding that net profit declined after accounting for higher allowances for impairment loss on receivables. Compared to the previous quarter (4Q25), however, revenue fell by 14% from RM92.8mil, but net profit actually surged by 56.2% from RM16.6mil. RCE Capital attributed the lower quarterly revenue to lower fees and early settlement profit income, while crediting the better 1Q26 profit primarily to the absence of impairment of goodwill on consolidation, and lower allowances for impairment loss on receivables.

Holy smokes: RM2.07mil in illicit ciggies seized in late night raid
PETALING JAYA: A smuggling syndicate's tactic of using a shipping container as a makeshift storage facility for illicit cigarettes was foiled when the Customs Department raided the site. Kuala Lumpur Customs Department director Wan Norizan Wan Daud said officers found 2,402,000 sticks of contraband cigarettes worth an estimated RM2.07mil during a 3am inspection on July 9. "Following intelligence work that began around midnight, our team raided a container parking area in Jalan Telekom, Kampung Johan Setia, Klang, and discovered the suspected contraband," he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Customs Complex on Wednesday (Aug 13). Wan Norizan said the cigarettes were believed to have been smuggled in via sea routes. "No arrests were made during the operation, and investigations are ongoing," he said. He added that importing such goods requires an import licence and tax stamps approved by the Customs director-general, in line with Regulation 42(1) of the Customs Regulations 2019. "The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possession of uncustomed or prohibited goods," he said. Urging the public to help combat smuggling, especially of cigarettes, alcohol, fireworks, drugs and vehicles, Wan Norizan reminded that such crimes cause revenue losses to the nation and pose threats to public safety and security. "As of June this year, KL Customs recorded 160 cigarette-related cases, with seizures worth around RM35mil. "The public can report smuggling activities to the toll-free Customs hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs office. All information will be kept confidential," he said.
