PM Modi To Address Global Airlines Meet As CEOs Jostle For Slice Of India's Aviation Boom

Last Updated: PM Modi will address the 81st annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where global airline leaders will discuss India's emergence as an aviation hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in the 81st Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Monday (June 2) at around 5 pm at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. India's largest aviation carrier, IndiGo, is hosting the IATA general meeting that began today and will last till June 3. The last AGM in India was held 42 years ago in 1983, according to an official statement. PM Modi will address the gathering of global airline leaders following IndiGo's significant deal with foreign airlines Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Delta to expand its services to North America, Europe and Britain. More than 1,600 leaders including top global aviation industry leaders, government officials and international media representatives are slated to attend the event, which will demonstrate the continued rapid growth of India's aviation market. The aviation leaders and media representatives from around the world will also get to witness India's remarkable transformation in the aviation landscape and its contribution to the country's socio – economic development. IndiGo Strikes Major Expansion Deal, Air India In Talks On Sunday, IndiGo on Sunday announced that it placed a firm order for another 30 wide-body A350 planes with Airbus, taking the total number of such aircraft to 60, after announcing new partnerships with Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Delta Airlines. The A350 planes, with ranges of up to 15,000 kilometres (9,300 miles), will allow it to further expand its network. IndiGo has placed orders for around 1,000 aircraft from the A320 family. 'This is yet another step in defining the airline's long-term plans of international expansion," said the company. Moreover, Air India said it was in talks with two of the largest aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing, for a major aircraft deal, including some 200 extra single-aisle planes. It is expected that the deal could involve hundreds of airplanes in total spread across various sizes. Getting new planes is crucial for Air India, which has suffered from years of under-investment under government ownership and is now undertaking an ambitious modernisation plan to recapture market share lost to global rivals. India's Growing Aviation Market According to Airbus forecasts, India's aviation market is expanding at some 7% a year, making it the fastest growing market. However, its growth remains hampered by weak infrastructure, fuel costs and high taxes. However, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson told CNBC TV18 said India's position in global aviation is still in its early stages with significant room for growth. 'The last three years due to network restructuring," he said. Speaking at the airline summit in New Delhi, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian announced that the airline plans to resume direct flights from the United States to India within the next couple of years. 'There's not a more important market in aviation at the present time than in India," he said. Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said 'the development of India's air connectivity in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal". The growth of its economy has made India the world's fourth-largest market, he added. (with inputs from agencies)

India hosts aviation power meet

TDT | Manama India's emergence as a global aviation force is taking centre stage this weekend as it plays host to one of the airline industry's most significant events— the 81st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).. Scheduled from June 1st to 3rd in New Delhi, the event marks the return of IATA's flagship summit to Indian soil after a 42-year gap, last held in India in 1983. Record attendance More than 1,700 delegates, including top airline CEOs, government officials, and global media, are attending the AGM, which is being hosted by India's leading carrier, IndiGo. India's Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, is expected to deliver the keynote address, signalling high-level national endorsement of the gathering. 'We are excited to bring the IATA AGM to India after a 42-year gap,' said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. 'India's place in global aviation has changed dramatically. The country has seen record aircraft orders, impressive growth, and world-class infrastructure developments.' IndiGo in the lead IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, who also chairs the IATA Board of Governors, noted that the summit reflects India's growing influence in global aviation. He said aviation is a powerful force for good worldwide and that this is particularly evident in India. IndiGo, he added, is proud to invite the IATA AGM back to India and showcase the country's rapid progress in the sector. India's aviation industry directly employs over 369,000 people and contributes $5.6 billion to the economy. When factoring in indirect, induced, and tourism impacts, the sector supports 7.7 million jobs and adds $53.6 billion to GDP—roughly 1.5 percent of the national total. Summit agenda The AGM will be followed by the World Air Transport Summit (WATS), where major global themes will be discussed, including the financial outlook for airlines, India's strategic use of aviation for development, and the role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Discussions will also focus on financing the journey to net zero and innovations in payment systems. CNN's Richard Quest will moderate the summit's CEO Panel featuring Pieter Elbers of IndiGo, Joanna Geraghty of JetBlue, Adrian Neuhauser of Abra Group, and Richard Smith of FedEx. Progress and inclusion A highlight of the event will be the sixth edition of the IATA Diversity & Inclusion Awards, which honour efforts to advance gender balance in the industry as part of the 25by2025 initiative. Willie Walsh said the AGM is always a moment for the industry to reflect and regroup in the face of enormous economic, geopolitical, and technological forces. He expressed confidence that the gathering would deliver value to stakeholders and strengthen global collaboration. As global attention turns to India's aviation trajectory, the AGM in New Delhi signals not just a return, but a recognition of the country's new role as a global aviation hub.

IndiGo will start direct flights to London, Athens and eight other overseas cities in the current financial year as the country's largest airline continues with international expansion and expects to have more than 600 aircraft in its fleet by FY30. There is an enormous opportunity in Indian aviation where rising demand is supported by infrastructure expansion. There is an unmatched growth leading to doubling of passengers from 2025 to 2030 and that the rising demand is supported by infrastructure expansion, airline CEO Pieter Elbers said at a briefing in the national capital. Currently, Indian carriers account for 45 per cent of India's international traffic while the remaining 55 per cent is served by overseas airlines, Elbers said. He also said the airline has the highest number of female pilots at around 15 per cent of the total pilot strength. While mentioning that IndiGo has partnerships with different airlines, Elbers said, "we have no short term ambitions or no ambitions actually at this point in time to move into an alliance".
