PM Modi to participate in IATA 81st Annual General Meeting on June 2 in Delhi
New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): In line with his commitment to developing world-class air infrastructure and enhancing connectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) 81st Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 2, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
The IATA 81st Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit (WATS) will be held from June 1 to 3. PM Modi will also address the gathering on the occasion, according to the Prime Minister's Office.
The last AGM in India was held 42 years ago in 1983. It brings together more than 1,600 participants, including top global aviation industry leaders, government officials and international media representatives.
The World Air Transport Summit will focus on key issues facing the aviation industry, including Economics of the Airline industry, Air Connectivity, Energy Security, Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production, Financing Decarbonisation, Innovations among others. The aviation leaders and media representatives from around the world will also get to witness India's remarkable transformation in the aviation landscape and its contribution to the country's socio-economic development.
Earlier on May 31, PM Modi virtually inaugurated the newly developed Satna Airport and the upgraded Datia Airport in Madhya Pradesh.
The historic occasion, which marks a transformative leap for the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions, was celebrated through physical events held at both airports, symbolising the Government of India's resolve to extend the benefits of air travel to every corner of the country under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
The ceremony at Datia Airport was graced by the presence of Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu, while the event at Satna Airport was attended by Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol. Both ministers highlighted the Ministry of Civil Aviation's unwavering focus on enhancing regional connectivity, improving accessibility, and catalysing local economies.
The Satna Airport, developed by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of Rs 36.96 crore, is set to serve as a major regional hub in northeastern Madhya Pradesh. Known for its cultural and industrial prominence, Satna's new airport will now provide seamless connectivity to religious and industrial centers such as Chitrakoot and Maihar. (ANI)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world's highest railway bridge, built over the Chenab River in Reasi district on June 6. Union minister Jitendra Singh confirmed this on Tuesday. Along with the bridge, the Prime Minister will also launch the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service. The Chenab railway bridge, now officially part of the Katra to Sangaldan rail section, stands as the world's highest railway arch bridge. This will be the first-ever train link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The bridge towers 359 meters above the Chenab River, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in height. For the first time, Kashmir will be directly linked to the rest of India via rail. This bridge is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which spans 272 kilometers and includes 36 tunnels totaling 119 kilometers and nearly 1,000 bridges. The terrain's complexity and the region's seismic sensitivity posed major engineering challenges, but Indian engineers successfully executed this ambitious project, a feat many once deemed impossible. Railway officials highlighted the Chenab Bridge's structural strength, mentioning that it can withstand wind speeds over 250 km/h and was built using about 30,000 metric tons of steel. One foundation, known as S20, is so massive it covers nearly one-third of a football field, specifying the scale and vision behind the structure. The entire USBRL project represents not just engineering excellence but also New India's resolve and determination. With electric engines powered by specially designed overhead equipment (OHE) and advanced tunnel safety systems, the railway line is built for resilience and long-term service. The train service was earlier planned to begin on April 19 but was postponed after cancellation of PM Modi's visit due to bad weather. After the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, this railway project now holds even more importance than before.

He credited Rahul Gandhi for compelling Prime Minister Narendra Modi to agree to the demand for conducting a caste-based census. 'The way the citizens of Madhya Pradesh welcomed the hero of the caste census on the streets of Bhopal was unprecedented. I am proud of my leader who made (PM) Narendra Modi bow down that the caste census will happen,' Patwari told ANI. Rahul Gandhi arrived in Bhopal on Tuesday for a series of party-related engagements. According to the scheduled program, the Congress leader is set to chair a meeting of the Political Affairs Committee at the state Congress office and discuss the current political situation in Madhya Pradesh with senior party leaders. While addressing a Congress workers' convention, Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at PM Modi, alleging that he yielded to US President Donald Trump's request to ease tensions between India and Pakistan. 'When Trump signalled, Modi ji picked up the phone and said, 'Modi ji, what are you doing? Narendra Surrender' and with 'ji hizoor', Modiji abided by Trump's orders. India's defense trade with Russia 'rubbed US wrong way'
Howard Lutnick claimed that New Delhi is "addressing" Washington's concerns over its arms imports from Moscow India's long-established arms trade with Russia has become a bone of contention with Washington, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said while addressing the eighth US-India Strategic Partnership Forum on Tuesday. The commerce secretary noted that US President Donald Trump had explicitly raised these issues with New Delhi and claimed that the Indian government was "taking steps to address" them. Lutnick also suggested that India is "starting to move towards buying military equipment from the US." "There were certain things that the Indian government did that generally rubbed the United States the wrong way. For instance, you generally buy your military gear from Russia. That's a way to kind of get under the skin of America if you're going to buy your armaments from Russia," he said. He added that India's participation in the BRICS group, which challenges the hegemony of the US dollar, is "not really the way to make friends and influence people in America." Currently, around 60% of the Indian military's equipment is of Russian origin. After the recent standoff with Pakistan, Modi praised the prowess of the country's air defense on Tuesday, particularly noting the performance of its Russian-made S-400 systems. "Platforms like the S-400 have given unprecedented strength to the country," Modi said in an address to the soldiers. The systems were acquired from Russia in 2016 at a cost of $5.4 billion, in defiance of a US threat to impose sanctions. Additionally, last month, India inaugurated a production unit for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The new facility will help New Delhi increase its defense stockpiles in light of what is a volatile security environment. Lutnik made his remarks on India's trade with Russia in the context of negotiations about a trade deal with India. While he reiterated Trump's view of India as "very protectionist," with tariffs on certain items reaching 100%, he said the countries are close to finalizing a trade pact that would benefit both. Lutnik stressed he is "very optimistic" about reaching a deal with India "in a not too distant future." The US is India's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $131 billion in the last fiscal year, according to government data. India exports more to the US than it imports, resulting in a trade surplus of over $41 billion. Meanwhile, New Delhi and Moscow have set a target of increasing bilateral trade to $100 billion over the next five years. Bilateral trade between the two nations skyrocketed since 2022 to cross the $60 billion mark despite immense pressure from the West on New Delhi to cut economic and political ties with Moscow.
