Malayalam actor Shafeeq Mustafa on becoming Sivarasan in ‘The Hunt - The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case'
Actor Shafeeq Mustafa is a revelation in the Nagesh Kukunoor web series The Hunt —The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. As the mercurial Sivarasan, the mastermind behind the 1991 assassination of the former prime minister, Shafeeq impresses in his breakout role. The Kochi-based actor is visibly happy over the outcome and the feedback coming his way from industry peers. For the 35 year-old self-taught actor who hails from Shoranur, the role was way beyond his wildest dreams. It came via a friend who told him about a production house that needed a South Indian actor. A round of auditions later, which included a dummy scene-and-look test, he was in. He is still excited about having got the opportunity to work with a director like Nagesh Kukunoor. 'It is an honour for me to work with someone like Nagesh sir. It is not like I am an established actor, I am trying to build a career for myself in films, and to get to work with him…I have given it my best shot!' His experience by way of a feature film is the 2020 film Ayyappanum Koshyum, in which he had a few scenes. Sivarasan's character as shown in the web series is complex, intelligent and cunning. He has an air of quiet resolve mingled with arrogance all of which Shafeeq has been able to translate onscreen without going over the top. Since Shafeeq was barely a year old when the events depicted in the series took place, he had a clean slate on which to draw the character. 'While part of my research came from documentaries, interviews about him, news reports, and photographs, the rest of it came from talking to people who lived through those times, especially journalists. This way I could try to get into the mind of the character,' Shafeeq says. Nagesh's inputs were of great help, he adds, in shaping the character per his vision. 'I had not read 90 Days (Anirudhya Mitra's book, the series is based on) I did not know the length of my character… I did not know too much about The Hunt. I gave it a shot because it felt unlike anything I'd encountered in my career so far, even though I am just starting out.') Of the challenges of essaying Sivarasan, the Sri Lankan dialect of Tamil aside, he says it was physically demanding. 'The prosthetic eye was a literal pain in the eye. It was so painful that often my eye would start watering. It was, literally, placing a foreign object in the eye and sometimes it would pop out. That was the actual difficult part. Nagesh sir would apologise about the discomfort…Imagine someone of his stature doing that!' Though Shafeeq has not learnt acting, he was involved in theatre while in school. He came to Kochi, pursued his cinema dreams dabbling in different departments including editing and as an assistant director. 'These were all my friends, so I could be around films, a part of movies!' Although he does not have too many feature films under his belt, he has been part of a few, including the noteworthyThiruttu Mundam. The film, directed by Renjith Vijayan, was an official selection at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK 2023). He does not know what comes next, but for now he is savouring the moment and the feedback from people such as Ahammed Khabeer, director of Kerala Crime Files, who told him that his performance was 'honest and essayed with absolute integrity.' The Hunt - The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case is streaming on SonyLiv

Between Truth and Drama: When filmmakers tread the line while telling real stories
In a cinematic landscape increasingly drawn to true events, the question of how much creative liberty is too much is one that filmmakers often grapple with. From retelling political assassinations and hijackings to exploring biopics, storytelling rooted in real-life events must strike a careful balance between staying authentic and keeping the audience engaged. The director's dilemma: Sensitivity over sensationalism Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor , who has never hesitated from experimenting with his work, recently dipped his toes in the genre of true crime drama. With his latest release - 'The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination ' he has presented a seven-episode long investigative drama based on the murder of an ex-Prime Minister. Highlighting how he managed to strike a balance between creative liberty and authenticity of the story, Nagesh Kukunoor, in an exclusive conversation with us, shared, "A lot of the people of my generation remember it (the assassination) very clearly. So, you want to handle it with the utmost sensitivity and not sensationalize things. " "For me, what is exciting about the project is it never taps into any of the political connections. What it deals with is a pure police procedural, a crime thriller, if you will. And that's what got me excited about the project in the first place. And it's a book, 90 Days, literally, once we chose to adapt it, it plays out like a thriller. And even though people are familiar with it, I guarantee that when you actually see the jaw's going to be on the floor at several points, saying, Oh my God, did that really happen?" The art of dramatization: Writing what wasn't said Shedding light on how drama brings the real on reel, the director added, "Now where we have to take creative liberty is, let's say, I'm giving a random example. Let's say a couple of people met, a decision was taken, and then an event happened. This is what would have been reported by the journalists during that period. Now, if we choose to dramatize that, I'm going to have to write a scene. I'm going to have the characters say certain things. And then I'm going to have it actually play out." "Now, I wasn't there, so how would I know exactly what words were said, right? But in writing the dialogues, and I had two co-writers with me, we made sure that we handled it with as much sensitivity as possible to make sure that we were true to the characters of the people we were portraying. So I would like to think that we did a solid job. We didn't point fingers. We just let the events play out as they did. We handled both sides with equal sensitivity. " The Hunt - The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case Trailer: Amit Sial, Sahil Vaid, Bagavathi Perumal, Danish Iqbal and Girish Sharma Starrer The Hunt - The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case Official Trailer Another noted film personality who weighed in on the subject is Anupam Kher . He has been a part of several movies that are based on real events. We got in touch with him when his 'IB71'was about to hit the big screens. Inspired by true events, 'IB 71' is an espionage thriller set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak war of 1971. It follows the story of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer, who uncovers a sinister plot by Pakistan and China to launch a joint attack on India within ten days. Speaking on the delicate tightrope between truth and cinematic storytelling, Anupam Kher, in context to 'IB71' specifically mentioned, "As far as the incident is concerned, there is not much cinematic liberty taken. But of course, because jab incident hua tha toh background score nahi chalta hai. Yeh film mein background score hai. And thodi-thodi cinematic liberty is taken with any, even when you make biopics. You do make it because it's an experience you want to give to the audience. It's a ten-day film that has to come in about two hours of cinema. But the feel of the film, the incidents of the film, what actually happened, how we sort of conned ISI, and how our agents went there, stayed in a hotel, etc. That is absolutely true." Anupam Kher Interview: IB71, His EXPERIENCE Of 1971 WAR, Vidyut Jammwal & More The grey zone: where liberty becomes a risk There is a limit, however, to how filmmakers can stretch the truth. In legal biopics or political thrillers, dramatization can lead to controversy, defamation cases, or political backlash. Even well-researched films. That's where filmmaker Nagesh's earlier quote becomes relevant - "We handled both sides with equal sensitivity." Audience decoding fact from fiction With the rise of true-crime documentaries and biographical cinema, audiences now bear a responsibility too. The line between truth and creative liberty often blurs unless viewers make the effort to research what was real and what was invented for screen impact.

Amit Sial On Playing SIT Chief In The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Series: ‘It Is Enriching'
Last Updated: Amit Sial plays the role of D.R. Kaarthikeyan, SIT chief in The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. It has been over three decades since a blast in Sriperumbudur claimed the life of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In the follow-up events, the hunt for the killer took over frenzied columns in the newspapers as the Special Investigation Team started examining the evidence gathered from the site. At that time, the investigators got their first lead about the plot hatched by LTTE militants, supporting further in the probe. Based on Anirudhya Mitra's book 90 Days, award-winning filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor has dug deep into the political archive, delivering The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case. The seven-episode thriller series traces the investigation that unfolded after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. It will also focus on how the SIT team races against time to uncover the conspiracy and track down the lead mastermind. Amit Sial On Portraying SIT Chief Actor Amit Sial, who is seen in the lead role of CBI officer DR Kaarthikeyan (SIT Chief), recently opened up about his experience of portraying the character. Speaking to the Mathrubhumi English, Sial disclosed how he prepared for the character and said, 'I didn't have too much time on hand from the time I was offered the series to the time it was going on the floors to search for the investigation a lot but I did my research and looked up Dr Kaarthikeyan's life a lot I write and watched a lot of about him through interviews online what I gather doubt that that is the man who has been given this humongous task." Describing his experience as very unusual and exhilarating, Sial said the character brought him a lot of responsibilities and also restricted him at the same time, saying, 'I can't do my thing; I'm playing somebody else." Amit Sial also spoke about his own perspective on the assassination case as he took on the role of SIT chief. 'I was relatively aware of the case as it happened when I was 16 years old. In the following years, I kept reading about it here and there. There were a lot of talks about the care and the one behind the crime. To be able to extract the truth from the kind of darkness, the investigation was very labour-intensive." Besides Sial, other actors in key roles are Sahil Vaid, Vidyut Garg and Shafeeq Mustafa.
