Global Container Terminals Launches Renewable Fuels at GCT Vanterm in Partnership with Tsleil-Waututh Nation's SPAL Corporation and the Burnaby Refinery

GCT celebrates the power of collaboration and climate action with the successful implementation of renewable fuels at GCT Vanterm in Burrard Inlet. Global Commitment Fuel Truck at GCT Vanterm Global Commitment Fuel Truck with Team at GCT Vanterm Vancouver, BC, June 05, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This World Environment Day, Global Container Terminals (GCT) proudly celebrates the power of collaboration and climate action with the successful implementation of renewable fuels at GCT Vanterm in Burrard Inlet. As of August 2024, renewable fuels have fully replaced conventional diesel in all terminal equipment, a major milestone in GCT's commitment to sustainability and responsible partnerships. This initiative not only supports GCT's environmental goals but also advances its commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #92, by fostering meaningful economic partnerships with Indigenous communities. Collaboration at the Core The implementation of renewable fuels at GCT Vanterm was made possible through partnership with the Burnaby Refinery and the SPAL General Constructors Corporation, owned by səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). Renewable diesel delivers an industry-expected emissions reduction of 60–80%. In its first full quarter of use, GCT Vanterm achieved a 68% reduction in emissions, demonstrating the immediate and measurable environmental impact of this transition. Supporting GCT's Path to Net Zero This initiative is a key part of GCT's broader strategy to achieve a 45% absolute reduction in emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2050. Renewable fuels are drop-in ready, allowing for rapid implementation without the need to replace equipment prematurely. This supports a practical and sustainable transition to hybrid and zero-emissions equipment, while reducing both operational emissions and the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing waste. Partner Perspectives 'We are pleased to have been engaged by GCT and the Burnaby Refinery to deploy this product through collaboration—creating a true win-win-win scenario,' said Matt Thomas, Director of Economic Development, səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). 'The adoption of renewable fuels not only addresses climate concerns in the short to mid-term but also demonstrates respect for our lands and shared future. This partnership fosters economic growth within our community and sets a strong example for future collaborations.' 'This collaboration reflects how we want to do business and the kind of neighbour we strive to be in the communities where we live and operate,' said Eric Waltz, CEO, Global Container Terminals. 'We're proud to reduce emissions while engaging Indigenous communities in meaningful economic partnerships. The successful deployment of renewable fuel at GCT Vanterm is a major step in our journey toward Net Zero.' 'The Burnaby Refinery is a leader in co-processing and the production and supply of renewable fuels,' said Martin Carter, Senior Vice President, Refining and Terminals, Parkland. 'Our team is thrilled to help advance the sustainability goals of GCT Vanterm while collaborating with səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation).' Looking Ahead Deployment of renewable fuels is expanding across all GCT terminals in 2025, as the company continues to align its operations and procurement strategies with both sustainability and economic reconciliation. O'Sullivan opens up lead over Si in World Snooker Championship quarter

Hard competition and enduring happiness are the reasons why snooker's 'Class of '92'' have continued to hold the sport's new generations at bay, according to the seven-times world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan. The 49-year-old eased into a 6-2 lead after the first session of his Crucible quarter-final against Si Jiahui on Tuesday while John Higgins slugged out a 5-3 advantage over Mark Williams. The trio have 14 world titles between them and few would dare bet against that number increasing as they continue to cut a swathe through the draw in Sheffield. 'There was a big element of [competition] in the early part of our careers,' said O'Sullivan. 'If one did well the others wanted to do better. 'John was the first to win a world championship, then it was Mark, then me. You're always wanting to keep up with them. I think that stopped a long time ago. We keep going as it is. I'm not sure how much longer we can keep going on for, though. There are so many young players coming through. I think we just love the game. We love playing, we love competing. Without it, you think, what would I do with my time? A lot of it is that as well.' O'Sullivan found it all too easy to build up a commanding lead over Si, who showed few signs of the form that had swept him to the semi-finals on his Crucible debut two years ago. Si did fashion a century to pull level at 2-2 and rallied again from 4-1 down, but a missed black off its spot when he stood on the verge of reducing the deficit to a single frame cost him dear, as O'Sullivan cleared up and finished the session with a quickfire 121 to put himself firmly in control. Former champion Luca Brecel clung on to Judd Trump's coat-tails by winning the last two frames of the opening session – including a break of 128 – to reduce the deficit to 5-3 in a match set to resume on Wednesday. Trump made consecutive breaks of 106 and 110 in the fourth and fifth frames, moving him within one of matching Neil Robertson's record of 102 centuries in a single season. Higgins was also pegged back as Williams won the last two frames to make it 5-3, with their eagerly anticipated match set to resume on Tuesday evening. Higgins and Williams, who have seven world titles between them, are taking part in the oldest last-eight clash since Eddie Charlton beat a 65-year-old Fred Davis in 1979. Higgins, who will celebrate his 50th birthday two weeks after this year's final, nudged into a 2-0 lead and regained his two-frame advantage in the fourth after Williams paid the price for missing a relatively simple brown. A break of 80 looked set to earn the Scot an almost unassailable lead but Williams drew on all his experience to win the final two frames of the session, including a break of 104. Georgia House passes tax bills for gas taxes, HB 581 deadline, Helene relief

ATLANTA (WSAV) — The Georgia House of Representatives passed two tax bills and a resolution, focusing on property tax relief, motor fuel tax relief and relief related to hurricane recovery efforts. House Resolution 42 would ratify, or officially confirm, executive orders issues by Governor Brian Kemp that suspended of the collection of motor and diesel fuel taxes after Helene. The resolution is sponsored by State Representative Matthew Gambill (R-Cartersville). 'Thank you to our partners in the House for ratifying Georgia's gas tax suspension during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene,' Kemp said. 'The suspension provided immediate relief to Georgia families.' House Bill (HB) 92 would extend the deadline for local governments to opt in or out of the controversial HB 581. HB 581 is a homestead tax exemption that locks in assessed value for homeowners if their local government opts in. The extension would run until the end of the month, Mar. 31, versus the current Mar. 1 deadline. The bill is sponsored by Shaw Blackmon (R-Bonaire). 'HB 92 would provide local governments that are considering opting out of this local tax relief with reasonable time to reconsider,' a House spokesperson said. HB 223 would exclude federal disaster relief payments, assistance grants and crop insurance related to Hurricane Helene from counting towards taxable net income. This would be in effect for tax years 2024-2029. It could also create a tax credit for timber loss and a sales tax exemption for building materials used to repair or replace greenhouses and structures used for the production of animals like coops. The resolution and both bills will have to go in front of the Georgia Senate and be passed to become law. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
