'An inadequate reaction' - Le Garrec sorry for 'dive'
"I wanted to come back to the situation of my contact to the head and my inadequate reaction," Le Garrec said in a statement to Midi Olympique on Tuesday., external"At the time, I received a shoulder to the face from the Perpignan prop and I did not know at all if it was intentional or not."I did not know how to react. After reviewing the images, I see that this gesture was completely involuntary on the part of the prop. I apologise to the match referees! I did not want to disrespect anyone. It is not how I behave."
Le Garrec also suggested that the situation in the match contributed to his reaction. Racing had just had Fijian wing Vinaya Habosi sent off for making contact with the head of a Perpignan player, and trailed by 11 points with 10 minutes remaining.Racing ultimately lost 28-24. The big-spending Parisian side, who sacked former England coach Stuart Lancaster in February, lie only four points above the relegation play-off spot with five rounds remaining of the regular season.Le Garrec is not the first player to be accused of play-acting this season. In March, La Rochelle coach Ronan O'Gara compared Stade Francais flanker Romain Briatte to Brazilian footballer Neymar, after Australian second row Will Skelton was sent off after clearing out a ruck. While Bath centre Ollie Lawrence admitted that he "probably could have carried on" when he hit the turf following a head clash with Northampton's Alex Mitchell in January - however he denied cheating, saying he was entitled to go to ground.Rugby's laws, external expressly forbid players to "do anything that may lead the match officials to consider that an opponent has committed an infringement" or, more generally, to act contrary to "the spirit of good sportsmanship".

Gabriel Martinelli is loved by Mikel Arteta but leaves Arsenal fans frustrated ahead of huge season for his future

Only Bukayo Saka [18,917 minutes and 218 starts], Martin Odegaard [15,280 minutes and 172 starts] and Gabriel [18,036 minutes and 201 starts] have featured more. And during the past three seasons in which the Gunners have finished second, only Saka [205] has completed more Prem dribbles than Martinelli's 200, while the Brazilian has averaged 1.9 completed dribbles per 90 minutes, more than his English teammate [1.8]. The squad may be unrecognisable from the one Arteta inherited five-and-a-half years ago, but Martinelli has been a constant – keeping his place thanks to his immense work and commitment both in attack and defence, something that continues to tick Arteta's boxes. In October 2019, two months before Arteta took charge, following a 5-5 Carabao Cup thriller at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp labelled an 18-year-old Martinelli as a 'talent of the century'. read more arsenal news CUP FOR IT Carabao Cup introduces new feature on 24 teams' shirts as Arsenal are trolled But nearly six years on, there are those who feel the 24-year-old is still yet to reach his potential, not kicking on in the way that many expected when he burst onto the scene following his £6m arrival from Brazilian outfit Ituano in July 2019. Many viewed his 2022/23 campaign – scoring 15 Prem goals and five assists in 36 games – as the start of something special, only for Martinelli's form to drop off with just 14 goals and eight assists in his last 68 league outings. It must be said that injuries hampered him last term, starting just 25 Prem games. Before their friendly against Newcastle in Singapore last month, Arteta said: 'We always want better and more from every single player but Gabi has performed very well and very consistently in the past three or four seasons.' BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS SunSport understands that, barring a mouth-watering offer from abroad, it is incredibly unlikely that Arteta will sign off on a Martinelli departure, as the winger is still viewed as a vital cog to his attack and a key figure in the dressing room. And in their Prem opener at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday, it would be a massive shock NOT to see Martinelli starting out on the left wing. Arsenal make major change to Emirates stadium just days before new Premier League season But with the £42m summer arrival of versatile winger Noni Madueke, 23, from Chelsea, there is a feeling that this is a huge season for Martinelli. The Brazilian will be desperate to return to the standards he has set in the past and prove his worth to hush the dissent from the stands and the shadow over his future. In last weekend's 3-0 pre-season victory over Athletic Bilbao, Martinelli produced an assist. But there remained groans and grumbles from Arsenal supporters demanding to see a more clinical edge to his game, a more polished performance from someone who is deemed to be an experienced first-team star, despite not yet turning 25. 3 In contrast, Madueke's second-half cameo was promising – full of energy, creativity and unpredictability on the ball, producing an impressive cross from the left that should have been finished by another new-boy in Viktor Gyokeres. Should Madueke continue to shine, Martinelli could be in a position where he is fighting for his place, something he has not been used to in his Arsenal career, even with the arrival of Leandro Trossard – the 29-year-old also linked with a move away in this window. An incredible statistic emerged last season that is still ongoing: With 51 goals in 45 different matches in all competitions, when Martinelli has scored, Arsenal are yet to lose. But there are those that point to the fact that in big games against the best sides in the Prem, Martinelli does not always make an impact. In six league games against Liverpool, he has four goals. But the majority of his strikes have come against bottom-half sides, with five against Crystal Palace, three against Leicester and Aston Villa and two against Southampton and Everton. And when it comes to average number of goals and assists per 90 minutes across his 208 games for Arsenal under Arteta, he has just 0.46. Compared with those who have played 25 or more games for the club under Arteta, that is less than Raheem Sterling [0.47], Reiss Nelson [0.56], Fabio Vieira [0.57] and Nicolas Pepe [0.65]. There are perhaps extenuating circumstances. Saka has a galloping full-back, in Ben White, to create space for him, as well as Odegaard, who loves to link up down the right – a side that is the preferred route to attack. In contrast, with Myles Lewis-Skelly usually inverting, Martinelli has often been left to fend for himself, to create something out of nothing in congested areas of the pitch with little to no support. Regardless, Martinelli needs to rediscover that spark that saw him hailed as a generational talent as a teenager. If not, there is competition that could threaten his Arsenal stay.

Pep Guardiola could be about to leave new Man City signing with serious concerns
James Trafford broke Championship records between the sticks for Burnley last season and returned to Manchester City hoping to be their long-term No.1 - now a formidable Italian problem could destroy his long-term plans James Trafford didn't walk into Manchester City this summer expecting to oust Ederson straight away. But he must have fancied his chances to get the No.1 shirt in the very near future from the Brazilian who is constantly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium for the last 12 months. The Premier League club have yet to receive any contact for their current No.1. But Ederson's name is not often far from the Saudi Arabia conversation while Galatasaray are also interested in him. Yet now it has emerged that should a late bid come in for Ederson then City will swoop for PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma - that's despite signing Trafford this summer. That's not good news for the England hopeful in a World Cup year. That's for sure. City brought in former player Trafford from Burnley in a £31m deal after they triggered a clause where they could match Newcastle's offer. They will pay £27m because they had a sell-on clause included in the deal when they sold Trafford to Burnley. Yet now the England international will find himself in a strange position should City sign another goalkeeper. There was a belief that Trafford would be understudy to 31-year-old Ederson this season before taking over next summer should the Brazilian move on. But it appears now City will be signing Donnarumma if they can find a buyer for their current No.1. Italy keeper Donnarumma is just 26 and at the peak of his powers. That would seem like bad news for Trafford, who at 22 will want to be playing. Donnarumma is available this summer after PSG boss Luis Enrique ousted him from his first-team squad despite his Champions League heroics last season. The French giants have spent over £40m on signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille as their new No.1 and Donnarumma has been exiled. The keeper has had an ambition to play in the Premier League and it appears now City would be his likeliest destination if he moves to England. Manchester United have been linked but they have currently no plans to enter into the race for his signature. Despite being booted out of the first-team squad, PSG will want around £30m to sell the Italian No.1 in the next couple of weeks. The keeper is understood to be stunned by PSG's actions. That's despite having just one year left on his current contract and no sign of agreeing a new deal for the last number of months. He was one of their star performers as they beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan on their way to European glory last season. Those around him believe his stats are also much better than the replacement PSG have bought. That also means he wouldn't be coming to City to sit on the bench and where does that leave Trafford? Being second choice this season to the long-standing No.1 would be tolerable with the knowledge that Ederson is seemingly itching to get a move soon. But he should be seriously concerned if Pep Guardiola goes out and brings in a high-profile keeper just weeks after returning to the club he came through the academy at.

Pep Guardiola thinks Leeds are signing 'exceptional' forward and Marcelo Bielsa agrees
Leeds United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign an experienced Premier League striker, who Marcelo Bielsa and Pep Guardiola have praised in the past Marcelo Bielsa and Pep Guardiola have already expressed their admiration for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Leeds United have agreed a deal for the striker, who is a free agent after leaving Everton. Daniel Farke has had a busy summer transfer window as the Yorkshire side prepare for their return to the top-flight. The club have welcomed Lukas Nmecha, Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach to Elland Road. However, it seems that the focus has now shifted towards securing a striker with a proven track record in the Premier League. According to reports, Leeds have reached a preliminary agreement to sign free agent Calvert-Lewin, who previously impressed iconic Leeds boss Bielsa. The centre-forward scored 71 goals for the Toffees over the past nine years and has shown he can be prolific when fully fit. While both Manchester United and Newcastle United were believed to be interested in the former England international, it seems that Leeds have outmanoeuvred them. Calvert-Lewin is now expected to undergo a medical at Thorp Arch before penning a deal with the newly-promoted side. Bielsa, who enjoyed an unforgettable spell at Leeds, had nothing but praise for Calvert-Lewin after the club's 1-0 victory over Everton in November 2020. "It's not easy to neutralise him," Bielsea said of Calvert-Lewin. "The whole team made a big effort defensively to stop him, especially our centre-backs against him. "But he had chances to score, and we worked so that the opportunities he had on goal would be difficult ones. But nonetheless, he was a player who was as dangerous as he usually is." Given that Bielsa was the one who brought Raphinha to Leeds in 2020, his judgment on forward players is not to be dismissed lightly. The Brazilian winger has surpassed all expectations since moving to Barcelona three years ago. Raphinha finds himself in the running for the prestigious Ballon d'Or this summer following a sensational season in which he netted 34 goals and set up 25 more across all competitions. His contributions were key in Barcelona clinching a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana treble last season. Calvert-Lewin will not be expected to reach anywhere near those heights at his new club, but Manchester City boss Guardiola has previously described Calvert-Lewin as "exceptional". He heaped praise on the 28-year-old in 2022. "When he is on top, he's exceptional; long balls, second balls in the box," Guardiola explained. "He's a dangerous player." While Leeds supporters will be keen to witness precisely what Calvert-Lewin can offer their bid to avoid relegation, the major hurdle the club might encounter is maintaining his fitness. The forward was sidelined for over 100 days at Everton last campaign due to hamstring and ankle problems. Moreover, hamstring and knee issues during the 2022/23 campaign kept him out of action for 223 days. Leeds will hope Calvert-Lewin can return to peak form under Farke this term, though it remains unclear whether he will be signed and registered in time for their Premier League opener against his former side Everton on Monday evening.
