PTV staff unpaid for months amid alleged plan to sell properties: Murtaza

Listen to article Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Hassan Murtaza alleged that Pakistan Television (PTV) is facing an artificial financial crisis, claiming the situation has left employees without salaries for several months. In a statement, Murtaza accused the government of deliberately weakening the state broadcaster as part of a plan to privatise its valuable properties. He alleged that the privatisation lobby is targeting PTV's real estate assets, worth trillions of rupees, and warned of possible building auctions. He said delays in salaries and pensions were unnecessary and linked to the removal of the Rs35 PTV fee from electricity bills. Murtaza also held the Minister for Information and the PTV managing director responsible for what he described as the broadcaster's near-bankruptcy. The PPP leader criticised the privatisation of Pakistan Steel Mills and other state-run enterprises, terming it detrimental to workers and aimed at benefiting specific groups. Read: State TV spent nearly Rs140m on power bills Earlier, state-run Pakistan Television Headquarters racked up electricity bills exceeding Rs138.94 million over the past five fiscal years, according to official figures submitted to the National Assembly. According to a written response submitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the NA, PTV's electricity expenditure has steadily risen each year, with a total of Rs138,936,472 spent from 2020-21 to 2024-25. In the fiscal year 2020-21, the electricity bill stood at Rs17,287,399, which increased to Rs24,045,382 in 2021-22, followed by Rs28,895,833 in 2022-23. The upward trend continued in 2023-24, when Rs37,693,235 was spent. Although the figure slightly decreased in 2024-25, it still amounted to Rs31,014,623. The cumulative total over the five years came to Rs138,936,472.

Aunt's matchmaking costs woman RM2.3 million in online love scam

GEORGE TOWN: A 53-year-old woman has lost more than RM2.3 million in an online love scam after being deceived by a man posing as a Singaporean businessman based in Canada, introduced to her by her aunt. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the victim's ordeal began in February last year, when her aunt introduced her to the man. According to a police report lodged by the victim, Alwi said the woman's aunt had met the suspect at a seminar in Kuala Lumpur and had intended to matchmake the two. He said that throughout the relationship, the victim only communicated with the suspect via WhatsApp. "In March last year, the suspect claimed he was involved in an electric grid installation project in Oman and needed assistance in transferring funds to purchase raw materials. "He cited unstable internet access in Oman as the reason for seeking help. "Believing she was in a genuine relationship, the victim agreed to help and accessed the suspect's account to make the transactions. "She was later contacted by someone claiming the transfer had failed due to cross-border issues, and was told she needed to pay additional banking service charges, with promises of reimbursement," he said in a statement today. Between March 28 and Aug 18 last year, Alwi said, the victim made 58 transactions amounting to RM1,936,818.67 to nine different local bank accounts provided by the suspect. In September last year, the suspect told the victim that he had deposited a US$404,500 cheque into "Heritage Asset Bank Oman" to repay her. She was then contacted by someone posing as a customer service officer from the bank's "Malaysian branch," who claimed she needed to pay banking charges to cash the cheque. "From Sept 25 last year to July 4 this year, the victim made another 13 transactions totalling RM399,407 to five local bank accounts. "The victim only realised she had been scammed when the excuses became increasingly unreasonable and she suffered significant financial losses," he added. The victim lodged a police report on July 8.

Paraglider injured after crashing on Welsh mountain

Paraglider injured after crashing on Welsh mountain The paraglider was in mountainous terrain when they crashed and suffered serious injuries after a 'hard' landing Summit cairn on Moel Wnion (Image: Chris Andrews/Wiki) A paraglider sustained severe injuries following a crash in mountainous terrain within Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). The pilot was transported to hospital by air ambulance after experiencing a "hard" landing close to Moel Wnion in the lower Carneddau mountain range. The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) reported the paraglider encountered difficulties following a significant malfunction with their equipment. Despite sustaining serious injuries the casualty managed to raise the alarm. Moel Wnion, standing at 1,903ft between Llanlechid and Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, is considered to offer "excellent soaring" conditions for hang gliders and paragliders. Its relatively flat summit makes it a popular training location for beginner pilots. Gliding organisation Snowdonia Sky Sports said: "Moel Wnion is a very forgiving site by local standards and offers great ridge soaring with good opportunities to hone those top-landing skills." Information about the incident, which occurred on Monday, July 21, has recently come to light. Seventeen OVMRO volunteers responded to the emergency, staying at the location for more than three hours, reports NorthWalesLive. Given the isolated position and the extent of the injuries Coastguard rescue helicopter 936 was deployed from Caernarfon airport. Helimed 61, a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter also based at Caernarfon, was placed on alert should additional assistance be required. An OVMRO spokesman said: "A paraglider flying close to Moel Wnion experienced a significant problem with their wing and impacted the ground hard, sustaining serious injuries but able to call for help." They added: "Local team members were quickly on scene with Rescue 936. (They) assessed and treated the casualty before packaging them for a stretcher move to the aircraft that had landed a short distance away. More info A paraglider suffered serious injuries when crashing in mountainous terrain in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). The pilot was airlifted to hospital after making a 'hard' landing near Moel Wnion in the lower Carneddau mountain range. According to the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO), the paraglider got into difficulty after experiencing a major problem with their aircraft. Despite the severity of the injuries, the casualty was able to call for help. Moel Wnion, a 1,903ft peak between Llanlechid and Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, is regarded as providing 'excellent soaring' for hang gliders and paragliders. With a flattish top, it is a training ground for novice pilots. Gliding club Snowdonia Sky Sports said: 'Moel Wnion is a very forgiving site by local standards and offers great ridge soaring with good opportunities to hone those top-landing skills.' Details have recently emerged of last month's crash, which occurred on Monday, July 21. Seventeen OVMRO team members were called to the incident, remaining on scene for more than three hours. Due to the remote location and the nature of the injuries, Coastguard rescue helicopter 936 was also summoned from Caernarfon airport. Helimed 61, a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter also operating from Caernarfon, was put on standby in case further support was needed. An OVMRO spokesperson said: 'A paraglider flying close to Moel Wnion experienced a significant problem with their wing and impacted the ground hard, sustaining serious injuries but able to call for help." (They) assessed and treated the casualty before packaging them for a stretcher move to the aircraft that had landed a short distance away. 'The casualty was transferred to Ysbty Gwynedd for treatment.' Tryfan hikers 'ignored advice' By July 21, the team had already carried out 105 deployments this year. Two days after the paraglider rescue, the team was twice called out again to deal with groups of hikers whose members were experiencing vertigo and anxiety episodes. One of the two parties ignored advice when they became stranded on steep ground on Tryfan, having begun to descend via the mountain's north ridge. The five-strong group phoned for help when one of them suffered an anxiety attack. As the group had no navigation equipment, head torches or warm equipment, they were advised to remain where they were and wait for a rescue party to join them. They took no notice. An OVMRO spokesperson said: 'The group phoned back stating they couldn't wait for a hill party and, despite firm advice to remain stationary due to proximity of dangerous terrain, the group initially ignored advice and moved. 'The team leader attempted to provide navigational advice which was not followed by the group. After further strong words of advice, they remained stationary.'
