2025 MLB All-Star Game on FOX Posts 7.2 Million In Viewership

An epic finish featuring the first ever home-run swing-off. A memorable tribute to one of baseball's greatest legends. The 95th MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta proved to be an instant classic. Tuesday's telecast also drew in 7.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched All-Star event, FOX Sports announced on Wednesday. That figure was also the most viewers for a FOX telecast since Super Bowl Sunday. Viewership for the Midsummer Classic peaked at 8.1 million between 9:15-9:30 p.m. ET. The National League defeated the American League for only the second time since 2013. After finishing 6-6 after nine innings at Truist Park, the game went to a swing-off for the first time in All-Star Game history. Philadelphia Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber earned MVP honors after he smashed three homers in the swing-off that helped the NL grab the win. As hosts, the Atlanta Braves also honored one of the greatest players of all time, Henry Aaron, with a touching tribute during the sixth inning that recreated his record-breaking 715th home run from 1974. The game had plenty of top moments beforehand as well. The NL took a six-run lead into the sixth inning thanks to home runs by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll. But the AL responded with a three-run homer by Athletics DH Brent Rooker. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then got the AL back within one run heading into the bottom of the ninth with a two-run hit. Witt then scored after Guardians' Steven Kwan beat out a ground-ball for an infield hit to tie it up and send the game to the home run swing off. Schwarber then secured the victory for the NL in the swing-off with a 4-3 tally, capping off an incredible night in Atlanta. The 2026 All-Star Game will be hosted by the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? MLB All-Star Game: Shohei Ohtani Contributes to NL's Win Over AL

Ohtani scored the first run in the MLB All-Star Game. After the AL rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game, the NL won it in the first tiebreaker swing-off. (©SANKEI) Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff single in the first inning and scored the first run of the 95th MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta. High-fives and smiles were abundant in the National League dugout ― and baseball fans watching the game in Japan enjoyed an upbeat moment on a cloudy morning. Appearing in his fifth consecutive Midsummer Classic on Tuesday night, July 15, Ohtani wrapped up the second inning by hitting a groundout to first. He came close to clubbing a homer to right field during the at-bat, but his hard swing produced a foul ball. Ohtani went 1-for-2 on the night. "I just wanted to be aggressive, no matter whether I end up hitting a home run or striking out," Ohtani said, according to Kyodo News. "My base hit wasn't an impressive one, but it was good." He added, "I had a good time getting to know players I've seen only on TV and understanding their personalities." NL starter Paul Skenes (Dale Zanine/IMAGN IMAGES/REUTERS) The NL led 2-0 after the first inning at Truist Park and extended its lead to 6-0 in the sixth. What was a one-sided game was upended in the seventh, with the American League scoring four runs. The AL added two more runs in the ninth to tie it at 6-6. After 295 pitches ― thrown by a combined 24 pitchers (13 NL, 11 AL) ― and nine full innings completed, the MLB All-Star Game shifted to a first-ever home run swing-off to determine the winner. This tiebreaker format was included in the collective bargaining agreement in 2022. National League designated hitter Kyle Schwarber hits in the home run swing-off at Truist Park. (Brett Davis/IMAGN IMAGES/via REUTERS) AL manager Aaron Boone (Yankees) and NL skipper Dave Roberts (Dodgers) each chose three batters to participate in the swing-off. For the AL, Brent Rooker (Athletics), Randy Arozarena (Mariners) and Jonathan Aranda (Rays) were picked to take three swings each. And for the NL, Kyle Stowers (Marlins), Kyle Schwarber (Phillies) and Pete Alonso (Mets) received the assignment. Batting first, Rooker smacked two homers. He was followed by Stowers, who hit one, and the swing-off participants alternated in order, AL followed by NL. Arozarena then clouted a homer to give the AL a 3-1 lead in the swing-off. Then Schwarber stepped into the batter's box and smacked homers on each of his three swings. The NL now led 4-3. Aranda didn't homer in his three allocated swings. Leading at that point, Alonso didn't bat, and the 4-3 swing-off triumph was officially recorded as a 7-6 victory for the National League. In other words, the six runs plus the tiebreaker bonus run for winning the swing-off. Kyle Schwarber (Brett Davis/IMAGN IMAGES/via REUTERS) "It was awesome," All-Star Game MVP Schwarber said, describing the home run swing-off, according to "The guys were really into it. They were yelling, screaming, cheering me on every swing. When that last one [went] over, they were all pumped. It was a lot of fun." Dodgers coach Dino Ebel had the assignment for NL batters. For the NL, second baseman Katel Marte (Diamondbacks) drove in Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr (Braves) with a two-run double to right in the first inning off AL starter Tarik Skubal (Tigers). That 2-0 lead held up until Mets slugger Alonso whacked a three-run homer to right in the sixth on a 1-0 fastball from Kris Bubic (Royals). Later in the sixth, Corbin Carroll (Diamondbacks) belted a solo homer to right-center to make it 6-0. With a three-run shot to left-center in the seventh, Rooker cut the lead in the half. Moments later, Bobby Witt Jr (Royals) added an RBI groundout as the AL pulled within 6-4. In the ninth, Witt delivered a run-scoring double and Steven Kwan (Guardians) hit an infield single with two outs, enabling Witt to score the tying run. National League first baseman Freddie Freeman greets fellow All-Star Shohei Ohtani before the Midsummer Classic in Atlanta. (Dale Zanine/IMAGN IMAGES/via REUTERS) Like his AL counterpart, NL starter Paul Skenes (Pirates) only pitched the first inning. Roberts then called upon longtime Dodgers southpaw Clayton Kershaw, who recently reached the 3,000th strikeout milestone of his career. Kershaw lasted two-thirds of an inning and struck out one. Ohtani said he was happy to share the MLB All-Star Game experience with Kershaw and Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, a former star for the Atlanta Braves. "It was a special All-Star Game in the sense that Kershaw pitched today, and obviously Freddie returning to Atlanta," Ohtani told reporters. Asked about his approach at the plate against Skubal in the first inning, Ohtani said, "My intention in my first at-bat was to hit a homer or strike out. So I was able to kind of squeak a hit there." After the MLB All-Star Game, Roberts admitted he wasn't ready to see games decided by swing-offs in the regular season. "I think that it was great for this exhibition, but in the regular season, I don't mind how it plays out in the regular season with the man on second base," he told a news conference, referring to extra-inning games. NL second baseman Brendan Donovan (Cardinals) was the only All-Star to have more than one hit. He went 2-for-3. Author: Ed Odeven Find Ed on JAPAN Forward' s dedicated website, SportsLook . Schwarber's homer hat-trick lifts NL over AL in MLB All-Star Game

National League slugger Kyle Schwarber reacts after hitting his third home run in a tie-breaker swing-off to give his team a 4-3 victory over the American League after the clubs played to a 6-6 draw in the 95th MLB All-Star Game baseball Kyle Schwarber smashed three home runs on three swings in a tie-breaker swing-off to lift the National League over the American League 4-3 in Monday's 95th Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The first such decider used at the All-Star Game was baseball's version of a soccer penalty shootout, coming after the teams were deadlocked 6-6 through nine innings in Atlanta. Three alternating batters for each team would take three swings each with the most homers deciding a winner. Brent Rooker blasted two homers in three swings to give the AL the lead while Kyle Stowers hit one in response to open for the NL. In round two, outfielder Randy Arozarena added a homer for a 3-1 AL edge. NL designated hitter Schwarber, a 32-year-old American who plays for Philadelphia, then responded by going three-for-three in blasting homers to give the NL the lead. When Jonathan Aranda of the AL couldn't manage an equalizer homer on his three swings, the NL finally had a victory after having seized a 6-0 lead in the game. Schwarber joked that if he had been trying to smash homers, he likely would have hit the ball into his teammates in the dugout. "Just trying to not hit a home run I guess, just trying to stay short, because if I had tried to hit a home run I would have probably hit my guys," Schwarber said. "Just happy that it worked out for us and the National League is going home with a win." Schwarber, named the All-Star Game MVP for his homer heroics, took inspiration from cheering teammates in the unusual situation. "It was awesome. The guys were really into it," Schwarber said. "They were yelling, screaming, cheering me on every swing and then when that last one goes over, they were all pumped. It was a lot of fun." It also kept the AL from making the biggest victory fightback in All-Star Game history, eclipsing the five-run rally by the NL in 1955. The AL still leads leads the NL 48-45 with two drawn in the all-time rivalry. While the AL has won 10 of 12 contests, the NL has taken two of the past three. An automated ball-strike challenge system, tested in pre-season games, was used in the All-Star Game. It allows pitchers, batters or catchers to challenge an umpire's call using a system similar to automated line calls in tennis. The MLB competition committee is considering adopting the system for the 2026 season. AL left-handed starting pitcher Tarik Skubal of Detroit was tagged from the start. Japanese star Shohei Ohtani, a three-time Most Valuable Player who led the Los Angeles Dodgers to last year's MLB crown, opened for the NL with a line drive single and advanced on an infield single by Atlanta's Ronald Acuna. That set the stage for a two-run double to right field by Arizona's Ketel Marte, a 31-year-old Dominican second baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, for a 2-0 NL lead. Moments later came the historic first pitch call challenged under the new system. A ball was called on a no-ball, two-strike Skubal pitch to NL slugger Manny Machado but overturned to a strike on appeal, producing a strikeout in the first inning. Pete Alonzo smashed a three-run homer and Corbin Carroll added a solo homer in the sixth inning to boost the NL advantage to 6-0, but the AL roared back with four runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Rooker smashed a three-run homer in the seventh while Maikel Garcia walked, stole second, reached third on a throwing error and scored on a Bobby Witt Jr. ground out to pull the AL within 6-4. In the AL ninth, Byron Buxton and Witt hit back-to-back one-out doubles to right field to lift the Al within 6-5. Witt took third on a ground out and Steven Kwan tapped an infield single to third to bring in Witt with the tying run. © 2025 AFP
