Bangladesh ex-PM Hasina slams CA Yunus for destroying country's economy

Dhaka, June 7 (UNI) Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus for his speech announcing April 2026 for the national polls, and asserted that he has destroyed the country's economy, caused massive social instability, and is destroying its very history and identity. Rejecting Yunus's claims that the country's economy was in shambles before he came to power in August last year, Hasina said: 'I saw his speech today. Yunus was trying to make excuses for his misdeeds.' 'His remarks do not match the reality. He claimed that the economy was shattered when he came to power. How is it possible? Rather, our economy was in the strongest position,' she added, reports Daily Republic. Highlighting the success of her tenure, and her efforts in uplifting the country's economy, she said 'He has destroyed the economy so much that he could not surpass my last budget worth Tk7,97,000 crore (USD 7.954 billion); rather, he reduced it. The budget does not go downwards. 'When I took office in 2009, Bangladesh's budget was only Tk68,000 crore (USD 5.576 billion), and it rose to Tk7,97,000 crore. In South Asia, Bangladesh's economy became the second, ninth in Asia, and 35th in the world,' the former PM added. She further stated that Bangladesh's GDP was growing by 8% prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the pandemic, the global crash of stocks, and the further deterioration caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, she was able to keep the economic growth at 6.7%. 'The Awami League increased per capita income to $2,794 from $445 in 2009. In 2023, Bangladesh's GDP rose to 7.4%. Due to extensive pro-people programmes, poverty was reduced to 18% and extreme poverty to 5%.' Recalling the UN General Assembly verdict about Bangladesh's economic status, she said that under her Awami League government, the country was finally recognised as a developing nation, and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Bashing the CA for disrupting the country's economic growth, she said 'He has destroyed the country's economy', adding that the prices of essentials goods is sky high, and unemployment rate has drastically gone up. 'During the Awami League tenure, a day labourer or rickshaw-puller could earn enough to arrange three meals for the family. Now they cannot earn money for one meal. 'We reduced the poverty rate. He has increased it.' Calling the CA a 'very smart liar', she said that inflation in the country had drastically gone up since Yunus took office, increasing up to 14% as opposed to its earlier rate of 8-9%. Condemning his government's use of mob violence as a tool for political gains, and calling his rule a 'mobocracy', she called him 'Mob King Yunus', rubbishing his claims that all her development projects in the country as PM were named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman because he was her father. Stating that it was a way of showing respect and acknowledging his contributions, Hasina said 'Yunus claims that I named everything after my relatives, parents, and siblings. It is not true. The Father of the Nation brought us independence. You cannot wipe out the name of Bangabandhu no matter how hard you try. 'History takes its own course. Today, you are trying to wipe out the memory of Bangabandhu and remove his name from everywhere. Where do you stand? The name Bangladesh was given by Bangabandhu.' UNI ANV RN

Mycah Go prioritizes Benilde first with NCAA Finals, PVL Draft happening on same day

De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde veteran Mycah Go has a lot on her plate right now. Last Sunday, Go and the Lady Blazers dispatched Mapua University and booked another trip to the NCAA women's volleyball finals. Days before that, Go attended the PVL Draft Combine, although she did not participate in the said event on its second day. On June 8, however, the NCAA Season 97 MVP will have to juggle her events as she will play with Benilde in the NCAA finals at 2:30 p.m. in San Juan, then go straight to the PVL Draft in Quezon City. "Hindi pa ako tapos sa Benilde so priority ko pa rin ang Benilde and katawan ko," Go said last Sunday after a hectic week of activities for her. "Unahin ko muna ang NC, mas gusto ko pa rin na maganda ang tapos ko [rito]," she added. [I'm not yet done with Benilde so my priorities are still Benilde and my body... I'll put NC first, I still want to finish strong here.] Go has been a part of Benilde's four straight finals appearances. In Season 98, despite her injury, Go was still on the Benilde bench as part of the coaching staff. Now, she has a chance to get her third title as a student-athlete. "Tuloy pa rin, tuloy pa rin sa pagtrabaho, [ayusin] kung anong kailangan i-improve," she said. [We continue on, we continue working on what we need to improve.] Benilde will face Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the best-of-three finals which will start on Sunday. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

AP: Jagan accuses CM Naidu of financial mismanagement, targets 'yellow media' for bias

Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], May 22 (ANI): Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the current TDP-led government in the State, accusing Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of failing to deliver on pre-election promises and engaging in financial mismanagement. The former chief minister also took aim at what he called the 'yellow media' for biased reporting in favour of the ruling party. 'I am not only fighting against Chandrababu Naidu but also against the 'yellow media',' Reddy said in a press conference. 'Before the elections, Naidu promised development, welfare, and income generation. He even claimed that Andhra Pradesh was turned into Sri Lanka during my regime. But now, let us examine what he has actually done in the last 11 months. He did not implement welfare schemes to the beneficiaries,' he added. He claimed that his government successfully managed the state even during the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic. 'Despite the crisis, both investments and GDP increased during that time and throughout our (YSRCP) tenure,' the YSRCP chief said. He said that in just 11 months, the state's revenue saw a growth rate of 3.08%. This is an important figure the public should be aware of, he said. 'The gross tax and non-tax revenues of the central government in FY 2024-25 (up to February 2025) amounted to Rs36,97,545 crore. In FY 2023-24 (up to February 2024), it was Rs32,50,181 crore. This reflects a total growth rate of 13.76% at the central level,' he said. Reddy said that under the coalition government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, additional borrowings of Rs30,100 crore were made. 'Capital expenditure declined by 17.80%, and most of the budgetary expenditure is being funnelled into the pockets of CM Chandrababu Naidu's associates,' he said. 'During the YSRCP government, even when accounting for all forms of liabilities, the total increase amounted to Rs3,32,671 crore over five years. In comparison, the liabilities in just the first year of the TDP government have risen by Rs1,37,546 crore, which is 41% of the total borrowings made during the entire five-year YSRCP term,' he added. He said that borrowings secured specifically for Amaravati amount to Rs3,10,000 crore. 'Chandrababu Naidu has been involved in a financial deal amounting to Rs11,000 crore with Access Energy India Pvt. Ltd. This agreement is for 400 megawatts of power at an annual cost of Rs210 crore, with a tariff of Rs4.60 per kWh,' he alleged. The YSRCP chief said that on 31st July 2024, SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India) invited tenders for the procurement of power with an assured four-hour daily supply during peak hours. The tariff discovered and the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) executed were at Rs3.53 per kWh. 'During our (YSRCP) regime, the Andhra Pradesh Government executed a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with SECI for power supply at Rs2.49 per kWh, with a complete ISTS (Inter-State Transmission System) waiver,' he said. NWSL expansion team Boston Legacy gets White Stadium court win

A Superior Court Justice on Wednesday ruled that the renovation of White Stadium, the future home of Boston Legacy FC in the NWSL, is not in violation of state law. Judge Matthew Nestor found that the Franklin Park stadium parcel, where the stadium is being revitalized, is not subject to Article 97 of the Massachusetts Constitution, allowing the project to proceed as planned. Advertisement The decision is a major win for Boston Legacy and the City of Boston, which have long championed their vision of bringing professional women's soccer back to the city through a public-private partnership that would renovate the historic stadium, which will remain at 10,000-seat capacity once the work has been completed. The stadium would be shared by the professional team and Boston Public Schools (BPS). A release from the City of Boston last month said the renovation will triple the available hours the BPS can use the stadium to between 750-900 per year. 'With today's ruling, we are pleased to continue the revitalization of White Stadium alongside the city of Boston,' Jennifer Epstein, Boston Legacy FC's controlling manager, said in a statement. 'Boston Public Schools students and the communities around Franklin Park have long deserved the type of generational investment this project delivers.' Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, a staunch supporter of the project, called the decision a 'historic victory' in a separate statement. 'A renovated White Stadium will be open and used by BPS students, coaches, and community 15 hours per day, more than 345 days per year,' Wu said in the statement. 'We thank the Superior Court for twice affirming this vital project for our students and community as a year-round facility that will inspire the next generation of Boston students.' The team is slated to begin play in 2026 alongside another expansion club in Denver. Construction is expected to finish next winter, in time for the start of the 2026 NWSL season. The end of this legal challenge removes a major hurdle for Boston Legacy, which has had a turbulent journey since Boston Unity Soccer Partners LLC, the investors group behind the club, was awarded NWSL expansion rights in September 2023 The White Stadium lawsuit, filed five months later, hoped to halt the project altogether. Advertisement The plaintiffs — the Emerald Necklace Conservancy and several residents who live near Franklin Park — argued the project would equate to the privatization of public land that was legally mandated to remain public. The plaintiffs, in their challenge against White Stadium, were met with various setbacks along the way. They failed to convince the Suffolk Superior Court judge to provide an injunction last March and then were denied their request for a trial delay. One day before the trial, a ruling by Nestor essentially threw out half of the plaintiffs' case, signaling that his decision may eventually sway in the defendant's favor. The judge in that pre-trial hearing ruled that the conservancy had no standing to bring a case against the defendants on the matter of whether the George Robert White Trust, which owns the stadium and the parcel of land where it sits, could make a deal with the city. The conservancy's president, Karen Mauney-Brodek, said in a statement on Wednesday that their group was 'deeply disappointed' by Nestor's decision and that they 'plan to assess our legal options.' 'Our advocacy for Franklin Park and the community is about supporting our kids and the park with a truly public stadium. The communities around the park should be central to decision-making for our parks, not asked their opinion after decisions are already made,' Mauney-Brodek said in the statement. 'We are proud to stand with community leaders who are not being heard. It's our organization's mission to work with all to protect and support Franklin Park and the rest of the Emerald Necklace for today and the future.' The cost of the stadium project is expected to exceed $200 million, with the NWSL club responsible for more than half of those costs. The debate over the future of White Stadium has become a hotly debated subject in the city's current mayoral race, which inadvertently brings with it a version of soccer politics. Advertisement Boston's current mayor, Michelle Wu, has been a staunch supporter of the White Stadium project, as well as the NWSL team behind it. The incumbent is facing a unique challenge by Josh Kraft, who has been an outspoken critic of the stadium. Kraft – son of New England Patriots and New England Revolution owner Robert Kraft – also has ties to his family's push to build their own soccer-specific stadium for the Revolution in Everett, which would require an agreement with the city.
